Yea I know. lol they posted this boxart on the Irrational site and disabled comments, which is something I don't think they've ever done before. I bet there's people at Irrational who really hate that the box is a gun man.
-
Or any market. Other than people who like dark, noisy, grainy, scratchy tiny racist text. That box is like 90% decoration with a tiny picture of George Washington being a racist in the middle! Not to mention it looks like a survival horror. I think "Chimney sweep dude shoots the american flag" is a fine boxart- and if you're gonna re-purpose any promotional art as boxart then I'd at least make it an orange and teal version of this one.

He definately looks like someone, but I absolutely cannot put my finger on it. Also yep! These characters continue to look a bit different in every image.
-
The game I made is Dragon's Lair, I am actually Don Bluth.
-
Maybe the people behind La Mulana just aren't focusing on driving people towards their Steam Greenlight page, like for example The Great Gianna Sisters, who used their popular Kickstarter as a platform to do that.

Idle Thumbs 85: "An Indulgent Dateline" or "An Indulgent Episode Title"
I_smell replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I've not played Assassin's Creed 3, but surely it's some kind of big deal for the whole game that the guy is native American, right? -
I got greenlit on Steam yaaaayyyyy! You're lookin at a LEGIT GAME DEV HERE FOLKS. I'm still worried that this isn't the best game I can make, but right now I'm just excited to be on Steam.

Idle Thumbs 85: "An Indulgent Dateline" or "An Indulgent Episode Title"

It was the Far Cry 3 Quick Look, in like the first 10 minutes, and a couple times later on. He basically says "This Voss guy's a real villain... but oh god all these characters who're on your side are the FUCKIN WORST! ...I'm with Voss, these people SHOULD be sold into slavery!" He's joking about how much he doesn't like the characters and not really taking a political stance on things, but yeah in the context of tourists actually getting kidnapped and held hostage in real life that's not a suitable punchline for anything anywhere. -
I didn't notice this until just now, but I have 3 games on OnLive, and they are in this bundle.

Idle Thumbs 85: "An Indulgent Dateline" or "An Indulgent Episode Title"

I laughed out loud at the image of the words "GAME BOAT" on the box. Cos like "GAME HEADPHONES" or "GAME MOUSE" might make some kind of sense, because games use those, but what horrible shade of reality are we living in where I'm looking at a BOAT for my VIDEO GAMES??? "I was thinking you could move your Xbox to the study." "No, no, the game boat will never fit in there." "I thought I'd play this new game on the weekend, but I couldn't find my boat." Oh then I also laughed out loud at the description and how blatantly stupid it is. EDIT- I obviously can't stop thinking about this, but the hilarious thing is that the boat doesn't do anything. So I imagine someone playing Kinect Adventures, and then getting the Game Boat, and then playing Kinect Adventures the EXACT SAME WAY but with a boat under their feet. "Why did I buy this?" -
I googled it, it's a word. Chris mentioned this on the "Idle Thumbs podcast" (a type of weekly audio programme available for download at www.idleThumbs.net) and it hit me as one of those flaws that's been staring me in the face the whole time. When I played Assassin's Creed 2, I forgot cutscenes instantly after they finished. I was KIND OF interested in Desmond, but not any more. If you take all that stuff out though, would I have still bought the game? If you presented a Metal Gear Solid game to me, which is a series I really love, and said "This is JUST stealth missions", my mind would paint that as like a half-price game. I LIKE the stealth play, but I'd be really hesitant to pay full price for that. Command & Conquer would feel disjointed and have a strange infinite game-loop pace. Which- don't get me wrong- I think sounds really stupid coming out of my mouth. I also squeeze a plot into every game I make even when it doesn't need one. I guess I just want some space for fun characters to express things, and gameplay doesn't have much room for that. A lot of people said the ending of XCOM was pretty silly, so should they take that out? Games with second-priority story arcs are Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto, Just Cause 2, I DID NOT care that my buddies all got shot halfway through Far Cry 2. Nobody's ever gonna remember the plot points of Soul Calibur, so could those guys save their time and design without it? Examples of no cinematic story arc: Burnout Paradise, Kerbal Space Program, Dance Central, Day Z, Binding of Isaac. Dance Central actually did add a plot to the third one. Minecraft also added an end-game quest where you fight a dragon, which is a kind of relevant topic. Also let's not get into an argument on what counts as just a thematic setup and what counts as a 3-act story arc. That's not a very interesting conversation, so let's just assume we all understand each other with that.

The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 - Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie - Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa

I've never played the first game, but I respect it, and I don't like the 16-bit art but the animation is winning me over. I love the completely unapologetic slammin' jammin' action. -

Not listened to the whole thing yet, but I'm calling Far Cry 3 as this year's most delcious DOTY. EDIT- Chris's description of Halo combat is really good. I've not played Halo AT ALL but he's totally selling me on it. Designing enemies as "elemental" is something I'm trying to do right now, and that's a good way of summarising it. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
I_smell replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Yeah I noticed after that that I accidentally named the best people in the world to do it besides Nintendo. -
There was a conversation a couple pages back that stuff like the Speedophile jet-ski and the Faggio moped (STILL in the game, in 2013!) are really stupid and clash with everything. I think everyone was pretty much in agreement about it. EDIT- Oh woops, I wasn't really paying attention to Tyler's post. I just thought this picture of Yvonne Strahovsky was a goofy postcard thing, like a billboard or a DVD boxart. It's not a photo someone took, and it's not really supposed to make sense.

You'd get twice as much life out of "SEGA All-Stars Battle Royale", and that is saying something. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

When it was first announced I was just saddened by how much of a Smash Brothers rip it was, but then I came around and said "oh well in Japan there's tonnes of these games. It's a genre. There's a manga one, an anime one, a toy one, it's a whole trend, so they're not really ripping off much." Then recently I watched more video of the game and I'm back to being appauled and offended. Let's not gloss over the point of Smash Brothers though: It's Pikachu and Super Mario and Zelda man. Characters we all know, even if you've not played those games for 10 years. How the holy hell does this PlayStation game not have Tomb Raider!? Or any Final Fantasy? I get that Crash Bandicoot is someone else's property, but if you can't GET Tony Hawk and Spider-Man, then don't make this game. There's waves of Point Blank and Rez and VibRibbon and God Hand and other forgotten PlayStation games to have as background filler, but don't jump into this idea knowing you can't have Solid Snake. Sony's history doesn't go back as far as Nintendo's, but this Dante is from a Devil May Cry that isn't out yet, and this background is from a Bioshock that isn't out yet. That's not a nostalgia thing, that's just advertising. Regular Cole and Evil Cole as two seperate characters, are you being serious? And Bioshock wasn't even out on PS3 for the first year! It's legitemately a little bit sad how far off the mark this game is. Obviously it's legal stuff, and it's probably way more difficult to get these characters animated and voiced properly than it is to get Jigglypuff done, but what a shame this is. The atmosphere in the game is so sterile and template, and I don't know if that's because the characters aren't as cartoonish, or because the games are all just a couple years old, or because the cutscenes are slideshows, or because the backgrounds play the same animation every time, or-- fuckin WHAT. Heavenly Sword was one game, and who the FUCK is "Radec". Anyway that's my rant about that. The first DLC is to download Emmet Graves from Starhawk, and "Kat from Gravity Rush", which is a PSP game I think. In Smash Brothers you play as DONKEY KONG from FUCKIN GOD DAMN DONKEY KONG. You can play as Sonic, the hedghog from "Sonic the Hedgehog". -
Rockstar have made some pretty 1-dimensional or haphazzardly written characters up til now, and it's fair to assume this'll be the same "I'm a good guy at heart, oops all serial killer" template. But I think it's hilarious grasping at straws that you call a police-woman a dominatrix stereotype perfect pornographic fantasy. Learn when to dial it back a notch here, buddy, I think that's a you-problem. The fact that prostitutes are still a part of this series, even though they're the go-to butt of the GTA joke, now THERE'S something you can complain about.

GiantBomb dot com (a computer gaming website available through the world wide web) is streaming the game Brazen with Brad Muir today. ...Is this game actually getting made? I can't tell. Yeah there's a thread on the Double Fine Action Forums challenging whether or not this was a good idea. Kinda harsh to have that conversation right in the same subforum, but WELP- someone did. I said that I think it's a big crazy risk, and they didn't have to do it. Leaving fate to a giant cloud of redditors is terrifying, they could've just voted for whoever made the funniest video, or people they recognise from the documentary, or anything. When it's an internal process, you can look passed who has the best concept art or "It'll be like Minecraft meets Skyrim meets Halo", but regular people don't think about game pitches. The vote thing is a big can o worms, but at least we can say all the game pitches are super interesting and I'm sure Double Fine will make something brilliant either way. Also I think it was posted on the forum that everyone within DF is super happy about it. OH and I forgot to mention, DF live-streamed something, I've not watched it yet, but here's the link. PRETTY LONG!

You had me at "Walking Dead".
-
Oh, see I had no idea this was a first-person game about survival.
-
I have no idea what it'll be, I'm just picturing garbage-bots moving around a map like some kind of tower defense, playing punch animations on... other robots? A lot o spikey gray buildings under purple n blue lights? The game in my mind looks awful.
-
I didn't vote for any, I just like to watch.
-
Yeah I don't get why Autonomous has so many votes. Building AI robots out of bits of gray shapes sounds boring, and the world and theme of it don't seem very exciting or like much fun either. Hack N Slash has the absolute MOST votes, and it's one of the games where I just can't figure out how you play it or what you do. He's talking about editing the game's code, but isn't that something that like 1% of people know how to do, or even enjoy doing? The votes are crazy. EDIT- Wow those are actually the top 4... welp, at least Space Base seems really good.
-
Yeah, strategy games are all about being as efficient as possible to overcome being outnumbered or outgunned, so you can imagine exploiting that with an increasingly spooky "kidnap people's kids and teach them to kill people" upgrade path. ...Actually I guess that'd more give the player EMPATHY for african guerilla leaders. Maybe that's not the best idea.
