  1. Ha, it's kind of funny to see that conversation resurrected.

As for clogging, maybe?  I'll put the rest in a spoiler, in case people don't want to read about toilet physics and my personal observations on pooping.

    spoilers!

Hahaha! I misread what you meant by "mixing in a daily helping of yogurt" and thought you were adding some to your cistern or something. All this time. All this time.

  2. Cough FAR CRY 2 Cough

(I know you don't like Far Cry 2 that much)

I also feel compelled to recommend Driver: San Francisco even though it meets almost none of the usual criteria for a GTA-clone, especially as it's all in-car rather than on foot.*

Couple of things in common with Sleeping Dogs: arcade-style driving simulation, modern urban setting, criminal backstory, complete and utter narrative insanity.

Plus you get to find out how deep the rabbit hole really goes whereas in Sleeping Dogs

you are given a hero's write-up for being an urban war criminal with the blood of hundreds and hundreds of gruesomely incapacitated citizens upon your hands

    and conveniently located fish hooks

S.Dogs is brimming with references to HK action movies though, if that could tickle you. And visually, it's incredible.

Steam Halloween Sale is supposed to start on the 30th, if that factors in to your immediate purchasing decision matrix.

*I have been mildly feverish over the last few days so, yeah. Judgement issues. Sorry, forum.

  3. When we redid the bathrooms in our house, we went with the low flow toilets that use half as much (or less) as traditional American toilets.  I had several friends who thought it was a terrible idea, that they would clog all the time and be much dirtier.  Not in our experience though.  We have clogged them, but it's been exceedingly rare.  I do feel like they are a bit dirtier, but you just grab the brush and give them a good scrub now and again.

For what it's worth, ever since I mixed in a daily helping of yogurt, my toilet bowl is much cleaner.

Probiotics: Good for you, good for your toilet.

In your estimation, has the addition of yogurt made the clogging even rarer, or had no noticable effect? Our drains are ... not the best, so I'm thinking this method might have beneficial effects. Or it might not. Toilet physics is not my strongest point.

  4. I visited some GamerGate hubs and there was a thread that asked what harassment was carried out by Anti-GamerGaters. That's when I realized I don't trust any information put forth by people that associate with GamerGate. For good reason, I would say, considering all the lies that got the movement started, but surely they're not only lying, not all of them. I look at the Tumblrs that collect harassment against Gaters (http://gamergateharassment.tumblr.com, http://antigamergate.tumblr.com) and I wonder how much of it is fabricated.

I think my mistrust to this degree isn't entirely justified. You can't even start to engage if you don't trust any of the information that the opposed movement shares. Maybe that's what separates us, the information we put and don't put trust in.

What troubles me about these two Tumblrs is that the publisher of the first has stated their lack of interest in verifying the authenticity of posted quotes or the history of the individuals that wrote them (in several cases, commenters have indicated that the quotes or images were fabricated or made by persons that were self-confessed trolls without particular allegiance).

The other presents material without comment (and doesn't seem to allow reader comments?), which makes it more rather than less easy to misinterpret.

TLDR neither seem particularly interested in practicing good journalism or demonstrating ethical behaviour?

edit - though of course when you or your friends are on the receiving end of unpleasant messages I guess assessing the credibility of each sender isn't high on your to-do list and maybe that's the point

  5. You are dehumanizing the proponents of gamergate whatever you call them. It's a natural consequence of being in opposition with them. You can't just change what terms you use and have it be premptively solved. It's something that you have to actively try not to do. If you see a guy on twitter posting about gamergate, you think "oh look, a gamergater troll. This poster is an ideology made manifest" and not immediately "oh look, a person with their own set of complex emotional experiences who has decided, for reasons yet unknown, to post with a hashtag." Otherizing is just a thing that happens. It makes thinking easier. If you don't want to do it, it takes a lot of effort.

That reminds me of two other pieces. First, from Holly Nielsen's The Danger of Labels:

"By labelling, we automatically create sides and in the world of Twitter, we group and judge people on 140 characters. There is no discussion, there is no debate, there’s just shouting and name calling. By giving group names, we don’t just create a clear 'us and them' divide, we also force people to choose and we give perhaps the more unpleasant people a banner that perpetuates these stereotypes. It’s a dangerous cycle."

"There is a reasonable discussion to be had here, but if everything is an attack, it will never happen. If the playing field is made less hostile, then perhaps the reasonable, silent majority will be more inclined to break their silence."

Second, from a challenging read by Oliver Campbell, When A Black Game Journalist Spoke Up On #Gamergate (Damion Schubert from Zen of Design / BioWare Austin had referred to it in a bunch of links that were "crucial reading for those who think that online harassment is a crucially important topic"):

"I can’t speak of everyone’s experience in dealing with members of Gamergate, but the majority of what I have personally seen and experienced is that they are passionate people, they’re incredibly smart and savvy consumers, they are ridiculous levels of inviting and inclusive, and almost anyone that shows up is welcomed with open arms."

"My experience has been pretty much the direct OPPOSITE of the narrative that has been pushed about these people. Of course, there are always going to be extremists and those who engage in sketchy and questionable behavior on any side of a conflict, and I don’t think anyone is going to debate that."

...maybe I should go back to lurking the thread

  6. Oh a part of this movie was filmed on Skellig Michael as I found out recently.

I'm sure the tourism out there is going to boom.

Oh man when you look at the Wikipedia image you can almost see the X-Wings circling.

Really really curious to see how (if?) SW7 will be more inclusive of Chinese / Asian audiences. I mean, I hope so, and in a totally cool way.

  7. Just out of interest, how difficult is it to start a union in the US? Do people have to join a union specific to their precise role or are there more general workers' unions that could suffice?

  8. (disappointingly, the .xxx domain name that I wanted is already taken. My chosen pseudonym turns out to also be a large company that makes baby products. Whoops!)

Wow who knew that Nature Diaps had such a diversified product base

  9. Two points I appreciated from a David Jaffe response:

I am not saying to TOLERATE asshole/crappy journalists. I am saying the way to ACTUALLY make them go away is to cut off their funding by supporting other sites that do things the way you would like them to be done.

the truth is, GG is NOT a joke but only because the good ones in GG ARE actually talking about important stuff (ethics in ALL journalism should be SUPPORTED and PAID FOR and REWARDED and the bad stuff should be shunned)

  10. Kotaku's Nathan Grayson wrote a quite in-depth post about it and actually is moving up in terms of pubs I respect, especially with this post regarding the future of the site. Also, The Verge published the anti-GG stance that I really hoped that Polygon would have had the courage to take.

That said, I really think that editorial and reviews are the primary focus of Polygon and so I'm not all that surprised that this hasn't been covered yet there.

Yes, I think the recent timing of the Verge article might be a factor in Polygon's non-reporting over the Shadow of Mordor / YouTuber Coverage topic - any mention could be interpreted as (over-)overkill, and that wouldn't be conducive to open discussion and positive change.

What with the Kotaku article being written by Nathan Grayson you can imagine how that is being accepted in some quarters.

  11. Yeah I don't know if they should have changed the name or not but for many (ie. me) it wasn't obvious that Master of sorry, Shadow of Mordor was going to be massive until juuuust before it hit so....

....apparently this one is actually alright, especially if you like Thief and remakes of Thief that don't share the same color palette as Thief? Twig are you going to stream your findings for the good of society?

Anyway there were certainly enough comedy British and American accents in yon trailer to keep me amused

  12. Questions

    - What do you actually do? Apart from go into a basement, play a weird Pac-like arcade game, sprint upstairs for 2 seconds to see if you did it right, then run back down and repeat.

    - How do you know if you are doing things right? Apart from if you make something gratifying in and of itself. Are there theater investors who require a certain number of visitors? Is this in part a Sim Art Space?

    - Are the art exhibits / music performances / films somewhat procedurally generated or is it a matter of unlocking finite, pre-set combinations?

Funding levels could have done with a bit of a tweak. $20 for the game but $15 extra for the art book and another $15 on top for the OST? Not sure about that, seems a bit steep. An Early Bird offer at $15 wouldn't have gone amiss either.

Good luck to them though. There's certainly a lot of artistic and musical talent here.

  13. So the other day I was out and about, and noticed a 50 year old white man just up ahead who was quite unashamedly ogling a well-dressed young minority woman as she passed.

I probably shouldn't have but I locked eye contact and then very intentionally checked out his package as I walked by.

Later on, I realized that I was still a massive misogynist.
