  1. Star Wars Video Games - A New Hope

Hmm, this seems less like 20 ideas and more like 20 logos. Rebel Jedi, Jedi Rebel, Rebel Warrior, Jedi Outlaw, Jedi Master and Rouge Jedi, I feel like are all the same game. I only bring this up because my first exposure to this image was through a tweet that claimed these were all games in development that got cancelled, and I was irrationally bothered by that assumption. Unless this book specifically says that these were all 20 different games. In which case, my bad.

Please refer to me from now on as a Crusader King.

I think Marcus Beer had a valid criticism about Blow's and Fish's "whining" (though I wouldn't characterize it that way). Both of those guys have participated in making themselves very public figures and have used their platforms in interviews to speak badly about MS' policies; it shouldn't surprise them that they are then "ran to" for quotes about MS' policy that deals with the very things they've criticized. That being said, Klepek is on point with this: As it might be relevant, before becoming an industry pundit, Beer worked PR for Vivendi and Ubisoft as well as other companies. I don't believe he has ever been a journalist. If there are sides to be picked here, I'd definitely be on Fish's. No one deserves the vitriol he receives, even if their public attitude invites it.
  4. Reminds me that we can put this into good use again:
  5. I may be misremembering as well, but isn't this how Normandy more or less got made? French appeasement of raiders?
  6. It'd be neat if the next time you dialogued with the shopkeeper, he would say you have a bill to pay for the pots and you couldn't buy anything until it was payed off. Maybe other merchants would immediately kick you out, having labeled you as 'pot-breaker.' On a similar note, in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, if you stole from the shop the merchant would attack you the next time you entered it and every character in the game would then on refer to you as 'Thief' instead of the player-entered name. Neat.

Then you realized the room you were cleaning was actually your own. #twitterchillers Thanks for sharing that. I enjoyed reading it. As someone who was a janitor for two years, I wish I had a story like that. Most of mine involve getting into yelling matches with homeless people. Or finding homeless people sleeping in the elevator. Or catching teens making out.
  10. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

FINE, MOTHERFUCKERS, I'LL GIVE IT ANOTHER GO! Chortling at the fact that I'm being shamed about quitting a game in a thread whose subtitle says I shouldn't be ashamed.
  11. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

To be clear, I've played way more Harvest Moon than I have Farmville and the latter isn't why I stopped playing the former. I stopped because my habits gained from other games led me to play Harvest Moon in a way that I didn't find it enjoyable. Energy is technically unlimited, as you can use the hot springs to gain it all back with a few dips in. The real limiting factor is that the day passes by quite quickly, forcing me to try and accomplish lots of things (harvesting/storing for sales, going to town to shop/charm the ladies, picking fruit/fishing) in a shockingly short amount of time. I ended up clearing up the entire farm the first night; a tedious activity I regret jumping into early. Ultimately, none of the goals the game laid out for me felt particularly interesting. What I really wanted to do was create an amazing, gorgeous garden, but I feel as if there's a lot of unfulfilling tedium between me and that goal. Makes me want to go back to Minecraft and just plant red and yellow flowers in elaborate patterns. Is there like a Harvest Moon: Dutch Tulip Farmer? I might be interested in something like that.

I'm putting down Harvest Moon. I missed out on the SNES era as a kid and am going back to many of the more storied games. A few minutes in I immediately saw how it was the precursor to Farmville. Though thankfully the game doesn't include any of that micro-transaction b.s., years of playing video games led me to start min-maxing right from the start, ruining my own experience for me. On a side note, there's some really surprising lines of existential dialogues in the context of religion. Aside from the game asking you "I believe God exists. You believe it, don't you?" my favorite line is "It would be much easier to live if it was true that God brings you happiness." lolwut?

And thus began the HL3 ARG on the Idle Thumbs forums.
  14. The Most Dangerous Gamer? I can see myself out, thank you very much.

There's also apparently some ini file "fixes" you can make so that you don't have to use the Ubisoft cable. I can't vouch for the method's validity or quality, as I haven't used it myself, but just wanted to throw that out there if it's something that's holding you back from buying the game.
  16. Hold up- are teens creating personas based on fictional characters as a way to explore their own aspirations and identity? That's fucking trill. Go teens.

Hmm. Edit: Derp. Just saw that this was from this past Saturday and Steve already mentioned it.
  18. Chris jokingly calling the sequel to TLOU "The Last of Us 2: Even More of Us" reminded me of this self-referential title: While obviously there's a billion titles that are spoken from the protagonist's point of view, "We're Back" always struck me as particularly odd.
  19. Half-Life 3

Wait, isn't a reverse countdown just a count forward? Didn't see the link, so I may just be missing a joke here.
