Dwarf Fortress- Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the rum.
Hermie replied to Sombre's topic in Video Gaming
Sold. ^ I've been wanting to get into DF too, but I currently don't see any way I could properly invest the time to learn everything. But I am digging these anecdotes, and I'm excited for the succession fort that is being planned. (I ended up reading through the entirety of Boatmurdered.) -
Life is awesome post: My life is going pretty swell right now! I'm in my hometown of the summer, working a bit to earn money, but mostly, I'm chillaxing, playing video games, meeting old friends, and working on personal projects. One of these is a film production, that we're aiming to shoot in July, and everyone involved are really excited. :3 It'll be a splatter/zombie movie, akin to the one I've already made. (Please watch, it's only 20 minutes. See if you can spot me!) Another project is a couple of my other friends building an RPG system. I'm only tangentially involved so far, but it's really fun to brainstorm with them. ^^ I'm a creative guy, and I always have a certain amount of ideas floating around in my head about things I want to make, but I'm also kind of a procrastinator, so it feels really, really exciting to actually just get on the ball make something. If any of you have stuff like that floating around in your head, "oh, I should do this some time", "that would be fun to do once i have the time for it", just friggin do it! Jump in with both feet! It feels awesome.

Castle is an extremely standard procedural, but it gets elevated by Fillion. <.< He seems to have a blast playing the role, and that makes it fun to watch. It got better in season 2, when the writers stared taking it less seriously.

The Game Informer preview was where it said timed exclusive. The team is an internal ubisoft one, I remember when it was announced, the creator of SP said on twitter "these guys are making it" and linked to a video of a Gameboy TMNT brawler. I'd find it now, but twitter is down. As for those who don't "get" Scott Pilgrim, there's not much to say. I find the exaggerated art and quirky dialouge to be infinitely charming, but I can easily see why someone wouldn't like it.

Hell to the yes. Too bad it's a timed exclusive for PSN. It's kinda funny that the closest I have come to considering a PS3 has been because of a downloadable retro-sidescrolling-brawler that's a comic-book/movie tie-in.

Yeah, my girlfriend is going to study in Göteborg this fall, and she's having a hard time finding a place. It's still a ways off, but most of the apartments that get put up seem to disappear in a few days, or they just never reply (She's Brazillian though, so that might affect her chances. =/ Sombre, I too think you should talk to your friend when you have the chance, even if you haven't decided. If she's half as good a friend as you make her out to be, then she will be understanding of the situation. Finally, congrats Miffy, you are an awesome dude with an awesome achievement! :3

Congrats Armchair! I just got to know that I got a B on the first of my two exams! ^^ So I too can report that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

After once again achieving disposable income, I have the game, still wrapped, since yesterday, and I still probably have to wait until tomorrow for me to get a chance to play it. The amount of praise for the ending has me really excited, and might even be enough to defeat my completionist impulse until after I beat the story. (Unheard of, usually) Actually, I lied when I said it was still wrapped. I took it out once to look at the included map, and to read (and sniff) the game manual. <.<

As someone with no connection to the X-Com series (don't worry, they're on my list), I found that trailer to be pretty great in terms of art direction and visual style, and how it invoke classic 50s sci-fi horror. But looking at the old games, I can definitely see where people are coming from when complaining about the disconnect.

Pretty sure the only one you need installed is Broken Steel, that one raises the level cap, and allows you to continue the game post story ending.

Indeed they are. Part of the reason I thought this topic was for realsies. The menu overhaul is good, and the tutorial will help with one of the biggest complaint about the game, that it never teaches you how to play <.< It's not complete, though. 3: *In the process of getting a headbobbing Heavy and/or Scout as an avatar* [edit]no animated avs on thumbs, but here it is at least:

Yup, the Medic and the Pyro. Though they might not come just yet, as they just put out a new video for the mac update: http://www.teamfortress.com/macupdate/

Damn you, in all the mac update haze, you almost got me. <.<

Michael J. Fox hardly does any acting anymore, due to his Parkinsons. His appearance on Rescue Me was one of the rare exceptions, and his first job in years, so I don't know if he'd be down, even if it's just a voice. Lloyd is still acting, mostly smaller parts, so I guess he is more likely. Dude's getting pretty old at this point though. <.<

Morslok makes a good point, "intent" is a bewildering word. The developer can have intended everything in the world, but you will probably never know just what. To bring back what someone cited as the most "pure" emergent game, Nobi Nobi Boy. Keita Takashi has said as much that he intended for players to make up their own fun in the game. Does that make it "unemergent" after all? I guess "scripted" or maybe "directed" could fit better, but neither cover it completely. I like gdf's breakdown that "one game mechanic + a separate mechanic and/or player interaction = unexpected result" is kind of what we are discussing here. And I guess some also include that a new set is established by the player, like the Japanese guys running away from the extra life. Take Team Fortress. In the original, players discovered that with grenades and rockets, they could use the blasts to propel themselves around the map (to be fair, it happened in the other shooters too, but I don't really think it was "intent" (there's that word again)). But when TF2 came out, this was included as a "mechanic", meaning rocket jumping and sticky jumping is something the demoman and soldier are expected to do, and maps are designed so that some places only they can reach. But now, modders are making maps that focuses exclusively on rocket jumping, where the goal is to traverse the map by flinging yourself around, bouncing from wall to wall, trying to get as far as possible, while also honing your skill for actual play. Emergence?

Well, it was my first time playing, so I basically spent most of my short lifespan figuring shit out. I was dark red, situated at the top left of the map. I made a non-aggression pact with bdmonkey early on, because the two of us were the northernmost guys. Inevitably, I got attacked by Dium, and slowly losing ground. After a while of this, Murdoc contacted me, asking me to join forces with him and Dium, to face against bdmonkey. I was hesitant, because I'm not the backstabbing type, but I realized it was either that or face extinction. So I did, and turned around to face bd, but that was the point where I had my exams, so I went away for a few days. When I came back, bd was all but extinct from Remo, and not only had Dium turned AI and was thus attacking me, but Murdoc had taken a lot of my stars too! I realized that I had lost, so because of Murdocs betrayal, I sent my remaining ships in his direction, surrendering the other stars to Remo.

Heavy, Doc. So friggin excited! I too, see BTTF as fitting more to the "Telltale formula". Like I wrote when I wrote it up, you could have to make sure Marty’s father dates his mom, chase Biff and the almanac through multiple time-lines and see the changes, Day of the Tentacle-style, or gather and fit together parts for the broken DeLorean. Dude, you are thinking in the completely wrong direction. Raptors on hoverboards.

I can but imagine Jake having full access to a virtual Jeff Goldblum...
