Thrik is spot on about monitors and TVs. Nothing to add. At work we sell so-called "smart-TV dongles". It's just the innards of a phone/tablet, but with HDMI out instead of a screen. Stick it in a port behind the TV, power via USB or adapter, and you have Android running on your TV, with no extra box in your entertainment center. Has USB in too, for wireless keyboards/controllers. If I didn't have my computer near my TV, I would get one of these. If you like messing around a bit to set up things just right, you can make it boot straight into Netflix or XBMC, have a custom launcher, automatically power up when your phone is on the same Wifi, and other neat stuff like that. Plus, you can run emulators and games native to Android.

Seconding Valkyria Chronicles. It's Anime WWI X-Com, kinda. Actually, more like Fire Emblem, as the characters are written and not generated, but there's turn-based, tactical shooting, so the gameplay revolves a lot around cover, using the right classes for the right tasks, loading equipments, and stuff like this. The visual aesthetic and art direction is really crisp and nice.

Persona 5 - 2015 the year of the PS3 / Persona Q - 3DS
Hermie replied to melmer's topic in Video Gaming
I'm strangely excited for more Persona, having only watched the Giant Bomb endurance run. Is that invalid? I really want to play P4 for myself, but I can't due to the platforms it is released on; PS2 and Vita. It's frustrating, because I have the two in between ones, PS3 and PSP. =( -
Tegan, that's bad ass. I made some more advanced Mindstorm robots in my youth, but nothing on this scale. In the last year or so I've been wanting to start collecting minifigs, now that they've made licensed Lego from all the stuff I grew up with, like Marvel and TMNT. But I still don't have the budget to justify buying those little sets to primarily get one figure a piece. But the places I've looked online that resells them are also prohibitively expensive. Hot scoops on where to get them are appreciated.

You'd need HDMI control/CEC turned on on both, I presume. As for the original question, I don't have a lot of experience with universal remotes, but this sounds like something you have to build towards from the start. Like, getting a reciever, HDMI switch or HTPC that all or most the components are connected to, and focus the controls there. I always recommend getting the Logitech K400 with a Smart TV or HTPC. It wont control all the devices like you want, but it's the best option for using a PC/browsing from the couch. Small and lightweight, yet has everything you need from a keyboard and mouse.

I prefer "Skyjacks" or "Skyjackers" over "High Jacks". While the latter is more clever, it's more awkward to say out loud. If someone mentioned it on a podcast, I wouldn't know if I should search for "Highjacks", "High jacks", "Hijacks", or "Hi, Jacks!".

Alan Moore Simulator 2014, wherein you desperately try to swat off Hollywood executives wanting to adapt your works.

Heartbreaking. I'm glad my girlfriend knows how to build a computer.

Nice! The trailer was funny, it perfectly captured the style of NatGeo/Discovery/History Channel trailers for real shows.

I listen to this one podcast that claims to be about video games, but in reality they mostly talk about how they don't play any games, or they talk about Spelunky, Dota 2 and Far Cry 2 over and over again.

Diminishing returns of graphics: Of course, there's more to it that that, but this definitely illustrates why the jump seems so much smaller this generation than the last.

I also had a hard time comprehending how the medical system is built up like that, until viewed through the lens of capitalism. Replacing "patient" with "customer", and it looks more clear. Supplanting it to the electronics business, no retailer will tell you a 19" CRT has the best image, just like no doctor would tell you to have a diet of only deep fried donuts. But if go to a shadier retailer, they might tell you that the gold plated, "HD" HDMI-cable will give you a better image, because they know they have better margins on that versus another cable. In the same way, a doctor might recommend a certain drug, even if it's not 100% optimal for your situation? ...That's a really scary thought.

Gravity review: Contrary to the title, it contains barely any gravity. In fact, almost all other movies have more gravity. 2/10.

The editor made an apology blog now, in proper Gabe from PA fashion; "we still think the article has merit, but sorry if you got offended". The comments below are... a frustrating read.

I kinda feel like Takashi Miike's style is influenced by his body-horror roots. Even the more goofy movies like Phoenix Wright and Tsukiyaki Western Django have a feeling of being kind of visceral (not in the video game trailer sense, but more like a cinematic fixation on the body). The image that comes to mind when thinking of a Miike movie is a close up shot of a creepy guy, staring out, breathing slightly. The camera is just a liiiittle too close to their face, so you feel uncomfortable.

Gamereactor is a Scandinavian game magazine that's given away for free in game stores, ad supported. It's kinda like Game Informer, but with WAY less cred. For the October issue, they decided to celebrate breast cancer awareness month by ranking "The game worlds' most braggable cans". Not an exaggeration. Swedish game journalists points out on Twitter that maybe this is profoundly stupid and doesn't help anyone. A newspaper about media picks this up, and the editor of the magazine lists the usual cliches, including "it's light-hearted fun! In order to highlight a serious issue", and "A woman thought of it, so it can't be sexist." Google translated. They only interview him defending himself in the article. In the end of the article, there's an addendum from the sole female journalist that was on staff at the time, that got "blamed" for this, saying "I have no idea what he's talking about, I had left at this point, I have never heard of this before". The deputy editor then says on Twitter that it was his girlfriend that thought of it. When I first started writing this post, I searched all over twitter for the image above. Then I realized I couldn't find it among everyone who retweeted it, because the woman who originally posted it has now locked her Twitter account. I wonder if it was because she got too much overwhelming support? This happened right before a convention, so Svampriket (kind of a Swedish Giant Bomb), decided to make a video reply, "Sexiest knobs". The text says this: The video is in a spoiler because you might get weird looks at work, unless you work in a really cool place. The best part is that they asked a bunch of random game journalists in the press room to film their crotches, and they were like "ok!".

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes

I found Scrubs grew better and better up until Season 4, but then deflated after that.

I'm with you, I read just enough to know to say "nope, this isn't for me". I'm focusing on the Pokedex instead, much less intimidating. But still daunting, obviously.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
Hermie replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
That seems very impractical. -
Yeah, I haven't played since gen 1, and it's kinda absurd how they spell out some mechanics very particularly, and some are just not adressed at all, leaving you as the player to research elsewhere. Here's the link on style.

Oh, I didn't even consider that. Gives me a chance to make sure I have the right counters too. Thanks for the tip!
