Finally got around to getting a wireless gaming headset and wireless 360 controller that has a PC adapter, so now there's sweet sweet PC gaming on my TV:

Episode 6: Randy Smith of Tigerstyle Games (and longtime Thief designer)
Hermie replied to Steve's topic in Tone Control Episodes
Not to be "that guy", but books are just a collection of words. Given enough parity with what we know from real life, our brains love filling out the gaps. That's not to say it's not an enormous undertaking, of course. But while we might never achieve simulating a human, I think it's definitely possible to get to the point where a simulated character can feel real. -

This is how you do video reviews. Paired with gameplay footage, preferably with the character not moving at all, as choices made within the game may infer agenda. -
Episode 6: Randy Smith of Tigerstyle Games (and longtime Thief designer)

I enjoyed this episode a lot, and I agree that the chemistry felt great. In fact, it didn't even sound like you were on a stage at all, just two dudes chillin' and chattin' 'bout gam' d'sin'. The discussion about what characters in video games are right now was particularly interesting. Mentioning the two outer points, enemy obstacle and static dialogue tree, made me wonder, how far away are we from system-based characters? AI routines as advanced as Halo enemies, but focused on talking and interacting, rather than dodging and shooting? The closest I've experienced is actually Animal Crossing. The inhabitants remember things you did for them, act a certain way, and go about their daily routine. But I know a lot of that is fudged, by f.ex. having a pre-set personality archetype. -
That's a funny assumption, as you can find

Miffy, are you sure this is your life? I swear I've watched this movie before. At the end, you give an inspiring speech, because even though the school board is getting rid of you, the learning was inside them all along?

At this point there's enough games that are episodic and/or early access that Giant Bomb or someone could easily make a GOTY category of "Games that started releasing in 2013 but kept releasing in 2014".

Oh wow, that's weird. Having been involved in something similar before, a warning light went off when you made your first post about it, but I thought, nah, it's probably fine. I was 16-17 when I responded to a job ad about about telephone operator something something vagueness. In the interview it was presented as a service that blocks phone salesmen. How would we sell this? Over the phone, of course. I got hired with a bunch of people the same age. The thing is, there's already a state registrery where you can reserve yourself against phone salesmen, so this service was basically registering them there + some other nebulus register I'm not sure ever existed. After a couple of weeks calling people selling them a free service, the manager they hired in my town came upon articles about the company that it was in trouble for being fraudulent in their original town, so she messaged us to not come in. The boss was like "no, this is old, we're legit, etc", but by the time he managed to come back, the company was declared bankrupt, and I never got the ~150$ I earned those weeks. Since then, I never apply for a job without knowing exactly what it is and what the company does.

The guidelines inspired me, so I'm gonna try to put to getter a Zelda: Link between Worlds this weekend. As far as the attribution goes, I think it's funnier when there's no name attached. It leads credence to the idea that it's a scientific process. Maybe make sure to not call anyone "writer" or "reviewer", but rather "evaluator", "observer" or "tester"? -
This is all sorts of incredible.

What if it's not a question of objective vs. subjective criticism, but rather the editoral/written voice of IGN vs. Greg Miller? When I write for different outlets, I adapt my writing style. A review in The Guardian the paper newspaper, a review on their website, and a review on a personal blog will all be different, even if they're written by the same person about the same game. This doesn't necessarily have to do with catering to different audiences, but rather the tone, voice, style of the selected medium. We've shown in the last 60 pages of this thread that we are keenly aware of the voice IGN has as an editorial outlet. Is it then so strange that Greg Miller!IGN Editor choses a different GOTY than Greg Miller!Personal Self?

Has anyone here played Might & Magic Heroes VI? It just hit the Steam sale, and as someone who basically grew up on Heroes II and III, I'm really tempted to get this one.

I agree with Patrick and JKO, if you expect/try to read The World's End and Hot Fuzz both as a complete parody and/or single genre construction, you wont get very far. The trilogy is more concerned with taking elements from genres or even specific movies and mashing them together with more emotional and heartfelt elements, and moving them from a typical setting to the English countryside. For me, the FilmCritHulk essay was spot on, and I was captivated by the tragic character of King that Wright & Pegg have managed to create. Then again, it's easy for me to sit here and tell you that, but if didn't deliver on expectations for you, then there's not much more to say about it.

I started researching this a bit, and very quickly found a Wiki list of "Self-Made item owners", that includes Jake, Sean and other Telltale people that own the Poker Night items. No wonder they get so many new friends. PS: From what I can tell my "regular" Lugermorph I got from Poker Night is NOT tradeable, but the self-made ones are?
-
Since this sale! It's actually made me want to trade cards, in hopes of landing a Dota 2 or TF2 item. So yeah, add me too on Steam for hot trades in your area.

To me this feels like how a lot of the recent Internet Bigotry has come to fruition. People carefully construct their little bubble made up of everything they agree with, so when something that crosses into their bubble acts against their own perspective, like a video game featuring homosexuality, their entire world feels like it's being assaulted. MIND YOU: Not an excuse for anything.

Same thing happened to me. I'm level 3 right now, but I haven't played a game since the patch, so I have 200% of my current level. So far I've only been playing Wraith Night, which is a lot of fun.

I record the automatic clips at work, so a lot of the time, people don't realize they've gotten through to the actual me. RE: Google + Boston Dynamics: ohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgodohgo

I don't really see how any of these quotes elevate Gone Home to anything more than what it is. All of them cite their personal experiences of video games, and how different Gone Home is for them. Nobody is comparing GH to high literature, but simple exclaiming that it is the game that, up until now, has had the most emotional complexity and ability to move them. Now, my serious video game discourse is limited to this exact forum, but I haven't seen anyone claiming that video games as a narrative medium has peaked with Gone Home, just that "this is something we have never seen before."

Shadow Complex! One of my favourite games this generation. I wish Infinity Blade didn't make so much money, so that Chair would make another one. =(
