  1. Anybody got a nice workflow for roll your own texture packs. I know how to make one. Its just that every time a new block is added my terrain.png is broken and needs to be replaced.

    1. Copy the .jar file to my desktop
    2. Decompress it and pull out the new terrain.png
    3. edit in image editor
    4. place in template folder
    5. compress contents
    6. place in texture pack folder

I guess the thing that really drives me nuts is getting my hands on the updated original terrain.png. Is there a simpler way to grab that?

  2. Remove a block of it and see if it all falls on you :)

I went up and just started placing cobblestones under it. I started to feel safe after placing about 5 blocks, then BAM! Cave in! Somehow I didn't die though. Two blocks passed through me before I was able to move away. Something was definitely different about that, I've had that happen before and been hopelessly stuck, suffocating.

it would've looked cool if it was a huge area.

  3. Hey everyone, been away from the game for a few updates and sorry if this isn't totally multiplayer related, but I came across this in a mine under my lake:

    picture.php?albumid=9&pictureid=34

So previously, that kind of thing meant smothering death if you so much as looked at it the wrong way. I'd avoid it but there's iron adjacent to it. The thing that gives me hope is that I've heard that there's sandstone now. So, is that what this is? Is it going to try and kill me?

  4. I'm using just the wiimote NES style just because I like the D-pad over a thumb stick for this kind of game. I think that the one advantage to the nunchuck is that you don't have to hold a button to run, therefore, you can do speed runs without accidentally grabbing onto grassy patches.

So I co-opped this with my 2 year old at times and actually found it quite helpful. She's two and a half actually, but d-pads and buttons are a bit too complex and abstract for her, so I carry her through the levels and she shakes her controller to shoot peanuts. Just shooting peanuts and seeing that she did something onscreen makes her very proud and she tells me about it every now and then.

I abused a little quirk about how damage is dealt in 2-player when Diddy is riding your back to get past the last two bosses. Instead of the first 2 hits removing Diddy, the damage is alternated, so Diddy takes a hit, then DK, then on the 3rd hit you lose Diddy. Couple that with the heart item and you're set, you'll have Diddy for five hits. Its also nice, because you always restart with Diddy, which comes in handy on those stages that don't have any barrels. The price you pay for that is, it costs you two lives each time you die. That alone made me feel like I was using a strategy rather than abusing an exploit.

My only complaint after finishing the game, going back and finishing the time trials and

    mirror mode

    levels are single player only.

It makes my daughter sad when "baby monkey" doesn't pop out of the barrels in mirror mode.

@Nappi Not only do you have to collect all of the KONG letters, but you also have to

beat all of the K levels that are unlocked in each world. Then you unlock the golden temple at the end of the game. There's a world in there that you have to beat to get mirror mode. I'm quite enjoying it right now. I'm playing backwards doing all of the normal levels from World 8 to World 1, as the bosses and K levels in mirror mode are absolutely insane!

  5. The latest patch has broken my auto booster system. Whenever I log off and back on, I find a minecart embedded in the wall.

    edit:

On the plus side, minecarts are destructible now.

I found those unreliable even in single player. I ended up making one long single track that connects my 3 main points of interest. Right at each end I have a booster with a ramp that resets itself. Along the way I just have one single booster that just toggles back and forth on a flat piece of track, that way its always at the ready for my inevitable return trip. That one is right in front of the middle POI, if I'm headed there, I just have to hop off a little in advance so the cart slows before hitting the booster. Its quick and easy to get back to the booster and set it for the direction I wish to travel in afterwards. Only problem though, for a multiplayer server, if its ever in the wrong direction from someone else doing something it'll pretty much stop you dead.

All in all, I can't wait till he programs in a matchbox double wheel launcher block.

  6. Holy cow! Laid out my build project in AutoCAD by drawing grids over a good piece of reference material. Went smoothly enough, pretty happy with how its going to work. I went on last night and started laying out some of the perimeter foundation. It feels immense in comparison to my drawing. I hope I have enough room.

I'm happy to report that I also only had one block reappear on me last night. Funny how the most important thing to me never got mentioned in any of Notch's bug updates. Must've missed something.

  7. I guess my opinions are formed by my playing the game primarily as survival single player. Right around when the monster spawns got tweaked for the worse, I found an incredible underwater cave entrance, I think I posted about it earlier, and I switched from normal to peaceful so that I could modify it to my liking. I think it took 10 in game day/night cycles to complete and it was a pleasant break from my other three projects, just to be able to have an idea and see it straight through. I probably would have done it on normal too if it hadn't been my first time dealing with the odd complexities of water.

You all seem to have gotten bored of free build right when I was introduced to it. Survival would be cool. It'd be neat to spawn and see an objective posted on a sign board and collaborate on things. Heck, I had fun just stocking up and organizing some of the boxes in the community center.

Would simply switching on monsters in this current world be kind of like cheating though? There are plenty of safe places and a lot of buildings would be pretty safe with minor modifications. I do realize abandoning everything would be tough too.

Maybe move the spawn way off into the wilderness so that returning to the settlement and building safe transportation becomes an early objective.

  8. I got kind of frustrated with the reappearing blocks myself. I'm just biding my time until that gets ironed out. I also need to find better reference material for what I intend to build.I just saw it on the map too, and I'm thinking of relocating it. Lots of wilderness to make use of.

What is the block duplication, is that an exploit? Is that frowned upon in these parts.

I guess this server should remain as a build server, I mean, its got so many creative things going on. A survival server would probably look totally different. It'd be a real pain building aesthetically with the nightly threats of life and limb.

That's not to say a survival server wouldn't be really sweet. It could be about a certain goal that the group must attain, like maybe recreating the "Congrats Nick" sign in pure diamond.

  9. in his attempt to make people riding boats and minecarts not look like shit, he adjusted the server/client reporting rate, which also broke mining.

it's interesting, his weird, failed experiments are kind of passively teaching me more about server and networking code.

Ah, interesting. I honestly can't complain. I bought alpha software. I was just wondering how the server could look so awesome with such a limitation, but it is a recent development then.

(I actually own both of these on CD. Eclectic, no?)

  10. Mods & Texture packs!?

    zomg... any recommendations?

The painterly pack is nice. You can also roll your own by selecting bits and pieces you like from a web form. There's also a 3D dot Game Heroes one that I've been meaning to get but haven't yet.

Then there's my personally edited vanilla texture that removes the grass from the sides of dirt blocks, changes glass to a simple 1 pixel frame and makes the cross hair into a smaller tri-wing thingy. I've used that the most.

I rebuilt the community chest building, but I didn't have time to replant all the trees that burned, so feel free if you happen to have some saplings and spare time.

    Minecraft Monopoly Board - GO!

  11. I'm doing a glass sky canal, yeah. Might take a while though.

Also: http://www.digitized-e.com/mroizo/OizoMapper.zip this is the map rendering tool I used for the first minecraft server. Maybe we can use it somehow on the new server as well?

That mapper is awesome. I like how you can render it so that each block in game ends up being more than 1 rendered pixel. Much, much better than cartograph, which I had been using. That had this annoying tendency to mirror my maps.

Anyway, I want to share a neat thing I found for any fellow mac users out there:

    MCMap Live

The best feature is the little slider in the bottom right that cuts away the layers of the map. Not quite realtime on my lappy, but damnit if it isn't exactly what I wanted in a mapping utility.

  12. This seems like a lively thread, figured I'd pop in to say hi.

Can you edit the title at least? Maybe we can all come back and edit everything once your real post is ready.

  13. I keep being amazed at the world generation algorithm.

It is great isn't it. I just found a hole in the lake where I spawned. I swam down into it and it becomes a column of water in a circular room at the top of a cave system. The natural layout of it is almost a perfect circular room around the circular column of water. It looks so good and I don't think it could have been designed better.

What's really neat is on the bedrock, in the center of the waterfall, there is a circular pile of sand sitting there that happens to be the exact shape of the hole in the lakebed above. Makes me wish I could somehow go back and watch the genesis of this world from that spot. I imagine everything was placed just so and then gravity took over once the world was done generating. I'd love to watch that sand plop down and the water rush in.

I've been trying to upload my maiden voyage into this hole to youtube, but it doesn't seem to like my screen capture footage for some reason.

  14. however I also have one of those magic mice that scroll on a whim, and accidentally change from a stack of TNT to a pick

LOL! Sometimes I play on my track pad when I have a minute and my 3 button mouse is in another room. I thought it was bad when I accidentally placed cobblestone instead of gravel. That sir, quite frankly sucks.

    EDIT:

On a side note, I'm still trying to decide whether its a blessing or a curse that this game is up and running in under a second, and just as quick and easy to save and quit. I use a launcher too. COMMAND-SPACE, M, ENTER. I sit down to do bills and 30 minutes later I haven't touched them because I'm laying track.
