  1. Seriously, I agree with the sentiments that this wasn't so far from a regular blast/cast. And I mean absolutely no offense by that. You guys have some kind of chemistry that makes about anything you do entertaining. And Chris, don't worry about the swearing. You guys could release a podcast where you take turns going around saying different swear words with the 'wizard' echo effect applied to them and I would still be thoroughly entertained. It says its explicit on the iTunes link and thats all that needs to be said about that. In short, thanks for releasing this, one man's garbage is, well, you know...

  3. Oh crap, you're right. I distinctly remember the Marquess of Queensbury thing being associated with those games though. Maybe it was a mode in Perfect Dark, or maybe the name of a stat after a multiplayer match completed. The only reason I remember it is because I distinctly remember being like "Marquess of Queensbury, WTF is that?" and ended up looking it up. It has something to do with boxing. Ditto with the sound effects, every now and then I swear I hear that female *GASP* used as a sound effect on TV.
  4. Haha, slappers on the N64! Chris, I believe you were thinking of the "Marquis of Queensbury Rules" cheat from either Perfect Dark or Goldeneye. Can't remember which game exactly, so long ago, but basically it forced you to only use your melee attack. Funny thing, I think this actually predates the term "melee attack", at least in the video game context. I remember the mode being quite enjoyable, as every character had the same "judo chop" move and that was it. I don't think you could even see your opponent's arm moving. Ah. The good 'ol days. When 15 fps didn't matter much, and all of your opponents were within arms reach.
  5. Idle Thumbs 33: Where's the Goddamn Thread?

I was just listening to the new Dream Theater album and the song Stargazer has the word "WIZARD" within about the first 30 seconds. I was wondering if you guys would be devoting an entire podcast to how awesome this song is next week. Its actually a really good song about a wizard climbing to the top of the world, but the end really pisses me off. All kidding aside, this episode was top notch.
  6. The only difference back then was we didn't all go on the internet and complain about the fact that there were too many gosh dang peripherals.
  7. That has got to be the most namby pamby thumbs up I have ever seen. Hey, so when my iBook was new (2001) I got a copy of Unreal Tournament GOTY edition. This was after playing the snot out of the demo. I guess I was the only guy who wasn't satisfied with just the demo from the sounds of it. Anyway, is this the version that's referred to as Unreal Tournament '99 in ye olde podcaste? I still have the CD and I want to futz around with it a bit more on my new Macbook, but I'm having a hard time finding info on it and I think this naming is the reason why. Basically, it was an OS 9 game, then there was an OS X update for that, which I have somewhere, but now I need an Intel version if there is one.
  8. I admit, the Other M trailer got me very excited. I know there's a faction of purists out there who didn't want any parts in the Prime series because it went first person, some of those are proclaiming that this is the return to what made Metroid great. This Poochy guy seems a little crazy to me. I on the other hand never had a problem with the transition to 3D, I just like Metroid games, so I'll be there when the new game (hopes for a name change) comes out. The only thing I worry about is the follow up: "Extreme Samus Beach Volleyball" with 1 to 1 jiggling. About the help thing. I swear that I read something to this effect a while ago. Basically, the help feature will play through the game for you only to demonstrate the technique needed to advance. You wouldn't be able to save what the computer did. Basically, you'd be shown what to do and then have to actually complete the task yourself to advance. Does anybody else remember that bit of info, I'd love to link to it, but for all I know it was a dream I had and I'm just totally .
  9. Fraggin' Wii message board.

Yeah, this is what happens some time after unlocking the snap shot tool in Metroid Prime 3 corruption. Some words of advice: If you like some of the photos you took in Metroid Prime 3, make sure and save them to your computer before this happens to you. "But how?", you say. Easy. Get yourself a tripod, turn out the lights, disable your flash and manually focus on your TV screen. Then go to the photo channel and Ansel Adams that ish. Sucks, I know, but its the only way to get those images out of your Wii. Why do this? Well, you see, what happens is this. When you take a screen shot in MP3, the image is "e-mailed" to your message board. Each shot is attached to a message that says "Screenshot from Metroid Prime 3". You can click the image and see it at about half size in the message if you wish, or you can hop over to the Photo Channel and flip through all of your pics conveniently under the Wii Message board browser. Nice looking and full screen. Except that you can in NO way manage the photos from here, only view them. Whatever, I can live with that. Fast forward to the "Wii Message Board is Full" message, if you don't have an SD card, you're hosed. The Wii will just delete everything prior to the current day. Nice. With an SD card, you're given the option to move all previous messages to the SD card. Not bad, right? Wait for it... You see, these messages include your screen shots. OK, seems sensible enough. Oh, but guess what, they are no longer viewable in the Photo Channel once moved to the SD card. The F*&%!, you say? Well, any message that was moved to the SD card now has a small SD card icon on it, and sure enough you can view the small images there, but thats it. Going to the Photo Channel and browsing the message board photos, it becomes apparent that those images are not showing up. OK, that kinda makes sense, they're on the SD card now. Lets hop over there. Wait, WHAT! Go ahead, pop the SD card into your computer, I challenge you to find those images. You won't. They're not images, they're some whacked out proprietary file that lumps each day's messages into one file that nothing but your Wii can understand. Sooooo nice. So basically, your stuck trying to shoot images that are half size once you've hit this screen. My other word of advice, once this happens, just delete the crap that got moved to SD. You see, I play Animal Crossing and I time travel. So when this message appeared, my Wii was chillin' back in the good ol' days of 2008. This means that there were a ton of messages between 2008 and now that didn't get removed. Without getting into the mind bending details of temporal anomalies, I'll just say that its possible to have a day on your Wii Calendar that has two logs of the days play times. You know what I mean, that annoying white envelope that shows up and tells your wife that you had Super Smash Bros. running for 7 hours last Saturday. Yeah, you'll have one on the Wii and one on the SD card for the same day. I can't be certain, it may have just been a coincidence, but I couldn't power up my Wii from the Wii-remote while this time paradox was going on. I powered up from the button on the console, found the little oddity that I just described, removed the SD card and everything was fine. So, I just deleted that stuff. If you're interested in finding this folder and deleting it from your SD card, or just mucking around with it, its not hard to find, its four uppercase letters and it contains a folder for each year that had a message board message in it. eg. 2009, 2008, 2007, etc. Then there's just a huge mess of 2 digit numbered folders to drill through. If you go down far enough you'll find the binary data. Cheers if you can do anything with that. I know, I know, TL,DNR! I thank you for being honest. and if you did read all of this, bless your pure little gamer heart. Peace!

  11. Holy Shit! Awesome E3 News!!

That Metroid video has me all tingly inside... I picked up on the reference to the C.O. that she talks about in Metroid Fusion right away. I also noticed the scene from Super Metroid where Mother Brain blasts the Giant Metroid off of Samus' head. Choice. Any speculations on who the bro is that lifts his face mask and says 'remember me?'? *edit* Sorry, this may help. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut_8qkC2KUQ
  12. Idle Thumbs 27: What is Game?

Bum bum ba-bum-bum "What is Game? Baby don't hurt me. Oh no!" Remo, can you make this happen? It'll be the only track on the 'Night at the Thumb' soundtrack. You guys haven't done a song in sooo long. Yeah, when I have a podcast going I'm actually most productive. Otherwise I tend to get bored and wander over to my web browser. I wanted to share my opinion about swimming in games. I never realized I had one until this podcast, but I do also despise swimming levels. The swimming parts in Super Mario Fucking Galaxy are my least favorite and this remains true in Super Mario 64. I think its something to do with navigating true 3D space as opposed to navigating on a 2D plane in a 3D space. Its like descent, a game of which I am not a fan. The swimming in Quake. Now there's something I found bearable. I don't understand why. Maybe its the first person nature. I guess it simplified the control and made it less disorienting. 2D swimming I'm fine with.

  16. This has become awesome! For the record, the bits I did were super easy band aid and text layer jobs in Photoshop. I have been humbled. This needs to be a spot the differences game on the touch screen thing at the local bar/pub.
  17. I have HOW many unbeaten games? *foams at mouth*

I set up an account there and entered some of my stuff. I love the fortune cookie. Anyway, I'd list the games I have yet to finish but I'm ashamed of my anemic library, so I'll just say I've only beaten about 20% of the games I own.
  18. I was kind of enlightened by your thoughts on whether or not WoW was an ethical game. You spoke as though it was something you guys discussed in the past, was this in a prior podcast, or was that just some random conversation you guys had?
  19. Well, I have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.
  20. Your favorite game glitches!

There are modes in this game that are UNPLAYABLE. They were infuriating at first, but now they're just plain funny, and the only reason I still have this turd. Take, for instance this shot I took of the pass defense drill. 9 times out of 10, the QB would scramble and run down the field, past his receiver, and then throw the ball backwards. The point was for me to defend passes, so why is the QB running down the field? Anyway, the image you see is the result of actually blocking a backward pass to the receiver. And by backward, I mean the QB was in the end zone and the receiver was behind me.
  21. Yeah, I wanna talk about this some more. I love when the story is told the way it is in Metroid Prime. Tons of details can be added to the plot by looking for the scans, but they can easily be avoided if you want. You can read up as you encounter things or just come back whenever you like. I remember a recent Sunday morning where I just sat down with a cup of joe and read through all of my new scans in Prime 3. Very relaxing. I'd like to ask you all if you remember a game called BioForge. I loved that game and, if I recall, the whole plot unfolded through reading logs and messages from your captors. Similar method of storytelling to Prime, though the info couldn't be accessed at any time, so it did force you to break up your play if you wanted to read. Any other good examples of this kind of story telling? I prefer it to big blown out cut scenes.
  22. Send us questions!

I've heard F-Zero GX mentioned on the show many times and I was just wondering how many of you guys from the podcast have actually beaten it. I haven't, yet.
