  1. Red Thumb Redemption

I'm going to finish Mass Effect 2 before I touch either one. I don't know why I started a long RPG a few days before this came out, but my new policy is to play one game at a time.
  2. Well it's easily testable. We just have to try and recreate the results with real time travel. Anyway: I think the "pausing" of moving water is awesome and hilarious.
  3. Anybody Played...?

This is the thread where you ask for impressions on any random games you're curious about. Thumb impressions are usually more valuable than reviews, and there are a lot of games nobody talks about...but somebody out there must have played...so just post a list or whatever and those who have played the games can tell you what they thought. Damnation Sacred 2 Condemned or Condemned 2 Divinity II Ego Draconis Perfect Dark Zero Cursed Mountain
  4. Anybody Played...?

I recently bought the special edition of Escape from New York, and there's an ad in there for a Snake Plisken Video game on the PS2. Anybody try that out? I was just imagining a Metal Gear Solid game where Snake Plisken and Solid Snake meet. "Call me Snake." "Snake?" Either they walk off into the sunset holding hands or the world rips apart, unable to contain the intensity of the quantum mechanics that are in play.
  5. I need help identifying a game

I was serious. Enjoying video games has prepared me to accept a premise like that as potentially awesome.
  6. Yeah, it's really not a bad game. I understand people's complaints but my first experience with a PoP game was playing The Warrior Within on an XBOX I bought from gamestop for $50 a couple years ago. Buying the XBOX was my attempt to get back into video games after a 4 year hiatus and my main memory of it was doing a tricky platforming sequence, dying over and over again and having to watch an unskippable fucking cutscene about a hundred times. I was like "this is what I've been missing." Indifferent face. My gaming philosophy is different from most in that it allows me to play Mass Effect 2 on Casual difficulty with no qualms because the combat is not super important to me in that game and I tend to just want to blaze through it. Anyway, my point is, since there are no "game overs" or limited continues in most games anymore, I like the concept of having the gap from failure to restart streamlined. I think the "no-fail" concept everybody hated was actually relatively comparable to regenerating health in FPS games. I wasn't a huge fan of PoP 2008, but I really like not having to click through a continue screen everytime I died. I would actually argue that its a better conceit to have the restart-from-failure mechanic incorporated into the game/story logic than to have a screen that says "you are playing an electronic game and you have failed...would you like to continue playing this electronic game on your XBOX 360 console?"
  7. I need help identifying a game

That sounds like an amazing game. Was it really good?
  8. Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse

This may be easy enough to look up, but I'll just ask it here instead. If I paid the $35 on the PS3 for this, it will just let me download the next episode right (no extra charge, no input of a code or something)...and will it prompt me to download when I log on to the PSN store once the new episode is released? It doesn't really matter because I usually check the PSN for updates once a week but I'm just curious.
  9. Recently completed video games

Wasn't that kind of the point? I only played a few hours of it, but my impression was that it was supposed to be as ludicrous as possible. It was like if you taped a bomb to a copy of Devil May Cry and threw it at a confetti and lipgloss factory.
  10. Movie/TV recommendations

I'm on a kick with 80s and 90s action and sci-fi and sci-fi action. I have recently watched Escape from New York, Escape from LA and Total Recall and really enjoyed all of them (plus I bought The Road Warrior bluray on sale but haven't seen it yet), please recommend more movies of this general flavor, I have seen almost none of them so even the most obvious recommendations are cool, and if a movie is cheesy and even kind of dumb in a fun way...so much the better.
  11. Books, books, books...

    I disagree.
  12. Movie/TV recommendations

Escape from New York I thought it was going to be an action movie but it's not. I liked it and I can certainly see why it's considered a classic B-Movie. Isaac Hayes had chandeliers on his car!
  13. Recently completed video games

    Batman: Arkham Asylum
  14. Books, books, books...

I remember that guy from a DVD that came with The Believer magazine. He pronounces "film" like "fillum."
  15. Bulletstorm Might Be the Next Serious Sam

I like them. They're not really good game design but they make me happy
  16. Piracy has hit a new low....

What does this have to do with the piracy of the humble bundle? Also...I'm curious about this animosity that Idle Thumbs has toward Destructoid. I trust that there's a reason for it...I just don't know what it is, somebody please fill me in?
  17. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

I feel like I should/shouldn't say something about hot scoops.
  18. Piracy has hit a new low....

Just to throw this out there...I've read that paypal charges $2.00 to process transactions, so if you use paypal and you pay less than $2.00 you're actually costing the developers money.
  19. Recently completed video games

No need to apologize, I was just messing with you. I didn't realize the anime was for your studies, what are you studying...it must be pretty cool.
  20. Yeah, it really gets to me that Tyler Perry puts his name in the title of all his stupid bullshit.
  21. General Video Game Deals Thread

Yeah, it makes sense, really, with how cheap some of the Steam stuff is if it's a game you're sure you want to play. Stalker was like $2.00.
  22. Making Music

That's sort of true, but one of the greatest things about Ableton Live is its versatility. For what it's worth, When I was making a lot of music I was using Sony Acid Music Studio for recording live instruments and Ableton for fucking around with midi and samples. I don't think Sony Acid is particularly brilliant software by any means, but it was the first thing I had, so I really learned all the ins and outs of it, so I think a key thing is that it doesn't matter what you use as much as it matters that you take a lot of time learning everything about it and mastering all the options with which it provides you. I'd say pick what appeals to you on a gut level (use trial versions or even temporarily pirate if a trial isn't available). Since the creativity involved in music is so nebulous, I believe it's more about what feels right to you than what is considered the best software by a bunch of computer nerds...but then again I know jack shit about technology so you might not want to listen to me. By the way, what have you been using for the stuff you've posted here?
  23. Monkey Island 2: SE

Smartest thing Lucasarts has done in like 15 years. Jake, do you think there's any chance you guys would ever be able to pick up a Sierra license, like King's Quest or is that all owned by Activision? I mean, giving Telltale the license is probably the best possible way to make some money off that stuff these days but I'm sure Activision wouldn't do it because Activision mostly does bad things. However, if they could be convinced that they'd make money...everybody buy the new Sam & Max stuff.
  24. General Video Game Deals Thread

I was just going to post about that . God, if I ever get a PC that can run all the games out there, Steam is going to ruin my life. I'll be living in a box with a laptop playing the $10,000 worth of games I've bought on Steam and using the library's wifi to buy more. Hell, if the deal is good enough, I buy games I can't even play just because I know it will work out eventually. Oh yeah, and my dad said I could install a game on his new fancy-ass laptop, so I'll finally get to play a bit of the first Stalker next time I visit him.
