I always think beer will help me enjoy certain games, but then I just can't concentrate on them.

I would argue that the same could easily be said of Dragon Age (though I know few would agree).

Dude...it's been one of THE indie games for like 100 years. Best educate yourself.

Legend of Zelda:Spirit Tracks or ******there's a train?

I've never played or heard of Donald Duck's PG...but just from reading the title...a zelda game based on that could not possibly be anything but the Jesus Christ of video games (by which I mean, "the savior"). -
That's fucked up. Torchlight is to Dragon Age what 5th grade is to kindergarten.

I totally agree (my goty is Trials HD). The bigger games get, the more it just makes me realize that games don't need to be big and are often hurt by their bigness.

I just found out that PS3 games are region free. This is exciting, but it's hard to figure out which games would be worth importing. Does anyone ever import to play Japan-only games or for any other reason? You don't have to talk only about PS3, though if you have any hot scoops on that, I'd be much obliged.

thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response. It sounds fairly promising. I'll probably give it a shot.

I almost bought that the other day, but I was afraid it looked too good to be true and would end up ultimately being boring like Animal Crossing. Can you give me a quick rundown of why it's worthwhile?

I'm thinking: dinosaur.

There's a rave review of a game called Canabalt on actionbutton.net: http://www.actionbutton.net/?p=618

The combat in this game is pretty solid and I can see why people would enjoy it, but the whole thing seems like a satire of what video games look like to people who don't play video games.

I've been listening to this podcast and it's great, but what the hell happened to selectbutton.net? It seems to have vanished into thin air.

I'm not sure it counts as "underground" if Alan Moore is involved.

One day, suddenly, you will wake up to find a Nintendo logo on your forehead. Thereafter, you will be much better a ping pong -
Leigh Alexander likes it. I like Leigh Alexander.

How much you wanna bet, though, they'd call it: Extreme Fishing 2010: The Reckoning

Ok. This is along the lines of my pollution of the Bayonetta thread with talk about easy settings. And here's the thing: I guess I'm just intimidated by high difficulty settings, but when I actually can get myself to try them, I can easily see their merits. So, I've just started playing firefight on legendary and it's made a great game out of this tedious rehashing. At first I jumped on a turret, and was taken out by one of those absurd purple spaceships before I even had time to aim at it. So, I retreated through a doorway and down a flight of stairs where I found I could wait for one or two grunts to squeeze through the doorway and deal with them in close quarters, and the stairs provided a barrier I could move up the stairs a little as they came in and back up to the lower plane as necessary, and they had a hard time with my shifting elevation. But then they started through grenades down the stairs and I didn't have much room to get out of range. So it's exciting how both sides are constantly adapting to combat conditions and even grunts can mess you up if you're not careful.

I've been playing Rocky & Pocky for the SNES. It's vaguely like Gunstar Heroes but with a cute anime girl and a raccoon. I like the fact that the game doesn't let you off the hook. You can try to brute force your way through the level while just trying to ignore most of your foes and pay the penalty of taking tons of damage, but those enemies follow you and so you're really just creating a compounding problem for yourself. But here's the real kicker: if you're in the same spot for a millisecond too long, the enemies respawn and you have to clear the path in front of you all over again, meanwhile, you're being attacked on all sides. It's like a twin stick shooter without the twin sticks. Instead, you've got a d-pad. Good luck. edit: in case I wasn't clear...it holds up, it's awesome.

That would be a boring fuck of a game.

Sir, let me introduce you to Jesus Christ.

Thanks, Randall, that's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
