GDC 2010! The Idle Thumbs Conf Grenade 2010: Phaedrus 2010
Garple replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Well I guess if anyone would know enough about Far Cry 2 to make the comparison it would be Chris Remo, Steve Gaynor or Nick Breckon. They are serious about some Far Cry 2. -
Ugh...stupidly drank last night and drank too much...felt quite sick afterward. I will try to remember that feeling every time I want a drink. That will be the positive side of my lapse. Saw a Coors Light truck today and felt nauseous. I think I'm done for a while. Anyway, Just Cause 2 is a good substitute for drinking...just as fun and silly without any bad side effects. I should join in some of the online Thumb gaming so I feel less lonely, but I'm really shy about that stuff and embarrassed about being really bad at video games.

Hubba Hubba Dang. I wish I had a girlfriend...
-
well congrats on your upcoming doctorization!

Hmm... Might well be worth a try...I bet I could get it running with 3D analyzer...to be honest though, I'm mostly a console guy (although I feel very insecure about it and often wish I were a PC guy) so I'd probably rather play it on X360. Then again, though, most thumbs will probably play on PC...
-
Thank you...are you a psychologist or therapist or something like that?
-
If I can run it, I'll most likely buy it on Steam...hurry with those specs, though...because I've had a few beers and I'm most likely to make online purchases after a few beers(Sorry, life thread. I know I said I was trying to quit, but I haven't quite succeeded yet).
-
You make a good argument, Jon. If nothing else, I feel I should download the rom...but I haven't illegally downloaded a game in a long time...so I hope I will just buy the game.
-
I'd buy it on PC and play it with you in a heartbeat if I thought my computer could run it, but I only have a basic laptop. That said, I'll probably get the X360 version...anyone else interested in that?

Oh fuck. I was afraid of that. The thing about having less Pokemon was that they were all fairly unique and memorable. There was no Pokemon I wasn't familiar with back in the day. I'm sure the only reason they kept making more and more was financial (like that South Park episode). I think I will definitely skip this, because there's no way I could enjoy this anywhere near as much as I enjoyed Pokemon Red when I was 10 years old. although I do wish I were 10 years old again...

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

Thanks so much gdf. That really means a lot to me to have your support. Also, your dad sounds awesome. How old is he and what is his history with games prior to the stuff you talked about (was he into them before you were?), if you don't mind my asking? Edit: This (by which I mean gdf expressing concern about my alcohol problem) is why Thumbs is so awesome and why after briefly switching my forum of choice to selectbutton.net I came back here. You guys are all genuinely good people and this forum is one of a kind. It's the only video game forum with no flame wars, at which all discussion is polite, civilized and intelligent. Idle Thumbs is a bastion of all that is positive about the video-gaming community.

do you think that this game is worth playing if I haven't played a Pokemon game since 4th grade? I mean...I think Pokemon is awesome, but I'm afraid maybe I shouldn't taint my nostalgia.

After the one or two missions you get into the open world stuff, and the story fades out, because you have to go rack up a certain amount of accomplishments (i.e. destruction and murder) to do the next agency mission, which I assume are the core story missions. So far the only things I don't like about this game are: flying the aircraft is really frustrating and you can only grapple with the hook, you can't climb also...which seems a little weird and awkward. Sometimes it's hard to get a good angle to grapple to your next point. And you'd think a guy who's using a grappling hook all the time would also be a great climber. But goddamn it's really fun. I love riding the motorcycles all over mountains until I inevitably crash. Edit: you can tell these bikes weren't really meant for crazy-ass rocky mountains (I mean, really, no bike is made for scaling fucking cliffs) but you can also tell that in this game, the things you're not supposed to do are actually the things you're supposed to do.

Seems like it wouldn't be cost effective to be going through the trouble of making 3D content for DS games. Unless making 3D games is actually easy and cheap or something. I bet there will be a 3D mario game and a 3D Zelda, and then third party support will be iffy. It'd be nice if they'd combine the size of the XL with the 3D capabilities.

I laughed out loud during the first cut-scene when the main character jumped out of a helicopter and said, "Don't wait up." Edit: Also, it's funny how your boss or partner or whatever says to you over the radio "You need to find a gun, Rico." And a millisecond later there's a red arrow on the screen pointing toward something labeled "weapon stash." This is such a video game.

Yes, sir. It's very simple and charming. It's not very challenging, but it's cute and atmospheric. It might be more of a rental, unless you're philosophically opposed to renting. I wish I had more to say about it, but it's just a gently pleasant atmospheric puzzle platformer. It's somewhat reminiscent of a game like Kyntt, in that it's meandering and has no sense of urgency but still manages to be fairly compelling. It didn't hold my interest for very long, but I got a warm and happy feeling from playing it. If you like the idea of being a little boy who has an amorphous pet that doubles as (among other things) a portable trampoline, you should give the game a try. You go so high bouncing off that thing! Also: it combines two of your great loves: video games and animation. The art style and animation really are as good as they look in screens and videos you may have seen. I don't have component cables for my Wii, but I imagine they would enhance the experience quite a bit. Edit: Also, I forgot about the parachute. That's really really fun. It really is the kind of light-hearted joyous experience the Wii was made for. Just don't expect a lot of depth or variety.

GDC 2010! The Idle Thumbs Conf Grenade 2010: Phaedrus 2010

I like how that sentence ends with a question mark, as though even you didn't know what to make of it. -
I'd never heard of these awards until now, but I just realized this takes place in Europe.
-
Anybody purchase the full game yet? I'm itching to buy it (and just as adamantly trying to resist due to backlog/$) and I'd love to hear some thumb impressions. Haha. Thumb impressions. "Look at me...I'm a thumb. Do I count as a finger or not, what's going on here?"
-
Maybe they're purists. I shouldn't dare to comment on this really, due to lack of experience, but it's just a thought. I mean, it is fair to say that DoW II is very different from the average RTS, right?
-
Thank god the poor kid survived. There's hardcore and then there's too hardcore. Jesus Christ, I stand by a quote I read on 4chan of all places "all games are fucking casual" that's my philosophy and I think we should keep it that way. They're games...they're for fun.

Am I the only one who's always waiting for 007 to grab a horizontal bar or doorframe and do the pull-up/kick thing while watching a James Bond movie?
