Holy Crap. Congrats, Steve.

Sounds like one of those games I'll admire for afar but won't have the wherewithal to actually play. I will be anxiously waiting to hear anecdotes from the Thumbs game though.

NO! I have no problem with violence, normally, but you don't hurt Bjork. "99 Red Balloons" = immunity for all future transgressions.

How about 8 PM GMT? If that doesn't work, I can do 9.

A coworker lent me House of the Devil and I just watched it. I recommend not watching it. It's lame. He also lent me The Fantastic Mr. Fox which is the best movie I've seen in at least a year.

Definitely buying this game day one. It's too bad the community is a little divided over which platform but that's inevitable.

Thanks, Patrick. Do you think these would run most games? How long do you think they will be fairly "current"? I'm willing to spend more on a laptop than I would on a PC.
-
Thanks for your concern. If it can run all the valve games, a bunch of cool indie stuff and some rpgs I'll be happy.
-
Oh jeez. 500 pounds is almost 800 dollars. what if I wanted to play games...but I didn't want to spend that much and was willing to settle for less demanding/older games? The fact is, if it's not a laptop, I'll never use it as my primary computer so basically a PC would be just a really expensive gaming machine in my case if I were going to go all out with it. Also: keep in mind I'm very much not a tech-guy as you have already noticed, so I can probably accept a much lower framerate than hardcore people...and stuff like that.

Ok. I appreciate the warning about hard drives, I kind of had a feeling that wouldn't work out after I typed it. My dad doesn't really have a budget, but he's not a gamer, so I wouldn't guide him toward something suited for gaming when he can meet his needs more cheaply. Also: thanks everybody for all the suggestions and thanks guys for offering to help me when you thought I lived in the UK...it did get me thinking, there's a guy at my work who is super tech savvy. Maybe I could pay him (or someone else) to build a computer for me and get something good without paying prebuilt prices. Any American thumbs like building PCs? When I said $400 I only said that because I was thinking about someone's old PC that they don't use anymore...I could manage a higher budget than that if we were talking about a new machine. However, spending the kind of money a PC costs is a big leap so I'm still working out whether or not I'd enjoy it enough to splurge. I think I'll wait a little while longer before buying a new machine and try a bunch of the recommended games (the ones I can run w/ my hardware) to see how I feel about PC gaming in general. Do you guys think there are enough great games and features of PC gaming to make spending a ton of money worthwhile? Thanks again for the outpouring of responses...please keep the advice and recommendations coming (if you feel like it).

My dad's decided to buy a new computer in the next couple weeks. Maybe I can convince him to let me install a game or two on it since (although he certainly won't be getting a gaming rig) the newer hardware will give me a better chance of running the newer stuff. I've been meaning to buy an external hard drive, I could boot games off of that couldn't I? That said, I own Torchlight and it's excellent. I haven't played as much of it as I should though. I'll get back to that as soon as I can tear myself away from Just Cause 2. The faction and agency missions keep popping up, but I just keep 100 percenting the random military bases instead to prolong and savor the experience.

I've been playing Quake III a bit...that's very comparable to Unreal isn't it? Or is it worth playing both? Also: FUCKING MOTHER OF FUCK that game is insane for a newcomer to try playing online. I thought the Call of Duty games were rough in that regard, but damn... Everything about it is so fast paced I get killed without having any idea without having any idea where my attacker came from and it almost never takes them more than one shot. and everybody's flying through the air all the time. I realize that tons of people having been playing this game and its predecessors for 14 years though, so I did know what to expect, and it's fun as hell when I play against bots. Do any of you guys still play these old shooters? I think we should do some Idle Sam HD on the X360 if anyone's down.

Also...do any thumbs have an older PC or laptop they might want to sell that works well for a lot of games? I wouldn't be expecting it to run top of the line new stuff, of course, but I've missed all the great PC games so if it runs stuff from up to like '07 or '08 I'd be interested in hearing about it. or does anyone know a good place to get such a machine/have any suggestions? I'd be very interested in hearing if any thumbs have something lying around that they wouldn't mind getting rid of for less than $400 and I'd prefer buying something from one of you guys if anybody is interested because I feel I'd get much better information about what the machine is capable of. Naturally I'd pay all shipping costs. If my questions and statements related to PCs and the gaming thereon, please let me know (well...don't actually call me stupid, please) because I'm a total babe in the woods in this area of knowledge but I want to learn. Also...if you guys have any links to websites that would give me a crash course in understanding the basics that a PC gamer/PC user should be familiar with or provide any other useful infomation, I'd be in your debt.

It gets fucking amazing at about page 90 if I remember correctly. Please complete the book, you will be happy afterward and it's not that long, anyway.

I'm Eastern standard time US so I'm 4 hours behind you. However, I can usually make some time for gaming on weekday afternoons, so if you have time in the evening (evening for you, I mean) that would work for me. In fact, I'm pretty flexible on weekdays, so why don't you throw out some times that would work for you and I'll let you know if they'll fit.
