  1. For all my continuing frustration with and disapproval of a bunch of stuff in MGS, the Ground Zeroes video somehow got me excited enough to pre-order Phantom Pain. I'd played Ground Zeroes before, and it does play a whole lot better. It does have all that horrible gross stuff in it, though...

Nice work. I particularly like the black-and-white ones – the two buildings one is really great.
  3. All of the Metal Gear series is both kind of great and kind of crap. It's great that it's somehow managed to even exist, but it's riddled with all sorts of issues. I'm probably too harsh. I've enjoyed what MGS I've played, and following the whole saga on Giant Bomb, and I do appreciate how it's managed to be simultaneously so huge and so strange, but I find a lot of it incredibly frustrating. Like, I don't want it to be another generic shooter, but it'd be entirely possible to maintain its distinct character while raining in some of the shittier elements. If nothing else, it could definitely do without all the puerile toilet humour and ogling. That stuff is such garbage.
  4. I thought the reason it was A: and B: was that before hard disks were ubiquitous you needed two floppy drives if you wanted to copy anything that wouldn't fit into memory to another disk.
  5. Photos of things

Recently I haven't been taking as many pictures as I ought, but I caught this on the way home from work this evening. I'm really pleased with how it came out: (Higher quality on Flickr)
  6. Grand ThVmb Auto PC

I don't think I'll be able to make next Monday, I'm afraid. I could maybe do Tuesday if the rest of you will be available. Or, if you have to complete the heist without me, I'll understand (though I might never forgive you).

I know this is a page old, but I thought it worth commenting on. I think this comment relates to an obstacle probably most of us (myself certainly included) face when it comes to handling criticism: we find it very hard not to see it as a criticism of character. I think it's entirely possible to say "hey, maybe that isn't an entirely appropriate thing to say" without it having any bearing on your opinion of the speaker, or your interpretation of their intent. Like, I've Internet-known Miffy for a pretty long time now, and have no doubts about him as a person, and taken in isolation his comment is perfectly innocuous, but I also think that in the context of how women and more specifically Anita Sarkeesian are talked and thought about, it was perhaps a little ill-judged. By no means a big deal, but shouldn't we be able to give our friends a friendly nudge to help us see what we ourselves have missed? It is a weirdly difficult thing to let go of, though. I'm forever impulsively rejecting things that aren't even directed at me, just because I think it might in some small way apply to me. But when I remember to, I do try to reassess things as they pertain to my actions and choices, rather than as something that condemns my very nature. Anyway, sorry if I'm dragging this out more than anyone can bear. I just think that sometimes the reason that these small issues get so out of control is that we feel like we're being judged, when I don't think that really needs to be the case. I hope Miffy doesn't feel judged.
  8. Math Thread of Fancy Counting

    What a neat puzzle!
  9. Math Thread of Fancy Counting

This thing continues to be enchantingly absurd to me: It's the epitome of bonkers maths stuff that (apparently) does actually work.

I believe that's actually what the umlaut derived from - originally it was two separate letters, then the e was written above the other vowel as a shorthand, then that became that squiggle that is the umlaut in handwriting, then it became a pair of dots. I'm always slightly disappointed when an umlaut-containing word in an umlautless context (such as a non-internationalized domain name) doesn't reintroduce the e. That always bothered me, too. It's saying the opposite of what you mean!

If I'm not mistaken, strictly speaking the proper pronunciation of Ü doesn't exist in English. I believe it's kind of like a Y/ee sound but with with a more rounded mouth. As far as natural English phonemes go, oo is probably closest. But there are actual German-speakers on this forum so I don't know why I think anyone should care what I have to say on the subject. You can probably trust this, though.

Stellar work, Architecture. Really great stuff.
  13. Isn't that the way with so many podcasts? There's a theoretical theme or topic, but really it's just a kernel for a bunch of pretty loose and unstructured chatting. Which I'm fine with. The most obvious comparison point is MBMBaM. I'd sooner trust the McElroys, but I really don't know who actually goes to either podcast expecting a roadmap for their lives. It's just an excuse for some people to blather on hopefully entertainingly for a while. I did the same. I also suggested it to my mum, who is not at all into video games of any description, but who does enjoy all sorts of murder mystery. Who knows whether she'll actually get anything from it, but it's only £4 on iPad, so it's no great loss either way. A few people mentioned Contradiction as an obvious potential inspiration for this year's GOTY videos. Perhaps they don't want to return to the FMV well after doing it a few years ago, but it does seem like it'd be pretty perfect. My totally unrealistic dream is that they somehow manage to get the actor who plays Jenks to interview them all.

What authority endorses the latter? Since it's a neologism derived from "giblet", surely it must be /dʒɪb/. Or am I missing the obvious hilarity?

  17. Happy Birthday!

Happy recent birthdays people and nation.
  18. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

I already refer to the character as Robot Cop (you can tell I'm very fun), so that thing is perfectly aligned with my interests.
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I guess they really think that little of their targets that they see them as not merely conspiratorial, but incompetently conspiratorial. On the one hand it's utterly baffling that anyone would take that at face value, but on the other, perhaps that kind of selective credulousness is the only way any of that bilge makes any sense.
  20. UK Thumbs

Yeah, my boss and one other guy have been working from home a lot recently. Unfortunately the rest of us aren't allowed, because we're children or something.
  21. UK Thumbs

Yeah, fuck this, and fuck my stupid oven of an office. It's basically impossible to work or do anything other than stare into the middle distance past by mid-afternoon.
