Cyborg Contest: You choose!
SignorSuperdouche replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
That's a shame, I'd love to hear the story of how a tree became a cyborg. It's symbolically interesting too, showing nature and machine as one when they're normally depicted as opposites. The more I look at it the more I like it UPDATE! As I mentioned above, toblix's cyborg reminded me of illustrations by Spike Milligan so I thought I'd scan something in as a comparison. I had a root around and found a nice picture with a chap with a unicycle for legs and thought it would work nicely: linky 1 What I didn't expect was to find this on page 117: linky 2 Both of these images come from A Dustbin of Milligan which is sadly out of print, but if you ever have the opportunity to get a copy you should definitely indulge ourself. It's awesome. -
1,200 sounds reasonable as a sample size and the data was gathered by an independent source so, although it would be nice to know more about how the the households were identified, the stats are probably kosher. Who is the intended audience for this btw? Is the distinction important?

I'm right there with Rodi on the cost/gain ratio. I don't like people who cut corners but I don't like people who don't know when to stop either. It's all about assesing the situation and deciding what's appropriate. There's simply no point polishing something to the extent that it's perfect if it's going to cost a lot (time, money, whatever) but only a tiny proportion of people will notice the difference.

Hey Idesofmarch, nice looking tree-borg. Does it have a cool backstory? gdf, yours is actually quite cool in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way. -
Idle Thumbs 21: The Hypersonic Effect
SignorSuperdouche replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Man I would love to see Lord of the Rings with Frodo as a super cop played by Jackie Chan. That would be sweet. ... I still think it would be sweet -
I think that's a fair point, there is a gulf between thinking and doing. I'm still not sure how I feel about it though. I have a hard time reconciling my unease with flippant use of the word rape and my disdain for those who shy away from swear words. I'm feel like I'm being hypocritical and it doesn't sit right with me.
-
I think we might be talking at cross purposes. When you say a word has potency my interpretation of that would be that it has an unconscious emotional weight attached to it. I would have thought that qualifies as a knee jerk reaction doesn't it? That's how I see it anyways. Oh yeah - quality joke there
-
See now, if I was giving an interview I would ask that question just to weed out all the people who say something trite like perfectionist.
-
I also find it somewhat disconcerting, but the usage here is very far removed from the actual act. Is casually saying a game will rape you really any worse than the way we casually commit murder within video games? I think it's all about context really and in this context I don't think a knee jerk response to the word is appropriate.

Cyborg Contest: You choose!

I don't think it's fair that we have to choose just one, and I'm certainly not sure which I like best, so I'm going to abstain from voting until I've had a good think. As a way of organising my thoughts, I'd like to share my favourites with you all and tell you why they made my shortlist. Nappi Nappi's cyborg made me smile. A lot. The strip is perfectly timed (the two panel pause before the little chap says anything is ace), the gag, whilst not laugh out loud, is a gooddun and finally it's so damn adorable. Score:  toblix It took me a while to put my finger on it, but this really reminds me of an illustration by Spike Milligan. Not a specific one, you understand, but just very much in his style. I love all the unanswered questions here. What's with the antenna? Is the dude being remotely controlled by some malevolent force or does he just like listening to Women's Hour on Radio 4? Is that blood? If so whose blood is it and why is it all over the cyborg's hand and abdomen? What's that brown stuff and why is there a lump of something lying in it? ... Score:  Hogboon The attention to detail here is awesome. Particular highlights for me include the rather miserable looking dude in the shirt and tie who has been squished into the bottom left, the Joe Pesci style reporting for duty and the fact that even though whoever made this monster clearly didn't give a fuck about any of the creatures they used for materials, they still went to the effort of putting a safety warning on the laser. Safety first! Score: Ossk The pencil and inking work here is stellar. Again there's lots of details on this one that make it stand out. The ticker-tape, the tattoo's, the fact that OssK quite literally depicted Jake as a dickhead - all good stuff. Score: EthanThomas The cyborg on it's own is definitely cool but it doesn't stand out as being totally awesome. The accessories that come with it most certainly do. My favourite add-on has to be the 16-bit alarm cock (which had me totally confused for a second until I realised it was in hex, 50 geek points to Ethan) for being based not on an actual cock but on an ascii representation of a cock: <=3. Ethan also gets like a bazillion geek points for his method of, what I can only assume was, drawing it all, scanning it in, printing it off on a dot matrix printer then scanning that in. Score:  I think, after considering it for a while, I'll have to go with Toblix's effort. -
Contest: With Saitek Cyborg

You do make a compelling argument, but I think robots are close enough that if someone drew a totally sweet one that was way sweeter than all our cyborgs, the robot should win (my cyborg has a clearly labelled dinosaur tail, so I'm not trying weasel my way into the competition) -

Yeah don't worry about it chap, it's easy to miscommunicate when we rely purely on text (and the occasional smilie). Besides, I'm a dick sometimes too. -

Sorry, that didn't mean to sound sarcastic (although reading it back I can see how it comes across that way). Your cyborg is looking great btw, you're pretty handy with a pencil Who's that sticking out the bottom with the ... uh ... steel phallus attached to their head? I does seem a little in your face, especially for that poor bastard. -

Sometimes when you pretend to be a prick, especially in a place where people don't really know you and you can't convey meaning through body language or tone of voice, you can just come across as a prick. It would be a terrible shame if you allowed people to get the wrong impression of you. -
The science museum is so fucking cool. Since July I must've been 4 or 5 times, I can't get enough of it. That game is way cool on it's own, but the facts you get are sweet too. I just learnt there's an electrical current flowing between Jupiter and one of it's moons, how amazing is that?

Toblix, that is fucking epic -
I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

Hell. No. MI2 is gorgeous.
-
MI3 had some of the best hand drawn art in a game I've ever seen, MI4 (which, I assume, is the game you meant) didn't look nearly as nice. In fact it looked positively ugly in comparison.
-
Holy shit, the dude says in the interview that his next game will be an adaption of Sense and Sensibility What gameplay can/are they going to shoehorn around that? Is EA just playing a joke on everyone?
-
Holy crap toblix that's awesome When did that happen?
