That is pretty shocking. I'm not sure it will change the verdict, but it certainly appears to be compelling grounds for a retrial. Holy crap, you guys are so good for expanding my vocabulary Or you would be if I could figure out how the blazes to pronounce the words I'm learning. Anyway, I have to agree that there is a lack of pragmatism on both sides. As each side antagonises the other further people get more and more polarised and a reasonable, middle ground resolution gets less and less likely. I'm sure you've all seen Larry Lessig's TED talk, but I'll post it anyway because it kicks arse. 7Q25-S7jzgs

Not being funny, but do we really get decent hard news coverage of anything these days?
-
So how does this compare to just asking people to pick a vegetable without all the six business? I'm not convinced.

There's a brief look at the legal side of things over on cnet. It doesn't go into much detail, but it gives a decent overview of the reasoning behind the verdict.

Do you have a source for that? According to the torrent freak article it was "assisting in making copyright content available". In most countries robbery requires withholding access to the property from the owner, which is why we have copyright law in addition to laws against stealing. I can't speak for anywhere else but in the UK copyright infringement could not be legally considered theft and would be a civil matter.
-
The boys were convicted of assisting copyright infringement, rather than copyright infringement. I'm not sure if there's a clear legal definition yet of what does or does not constitute assisting copyright infringement. Also worth noting is that the boys got jail time and a fine. IANAL but I'm fairly certain, at least in the UK, only a civil court can impose a fine and only a criminal court can impose a custodial sentence. I don't know if Sweden has a distinction between criminal and civil laws but it would be worth looking into to see what the deal is there. Finally, I would be wary of the idea that the Pirate Party received a massive boost from this. Twenty percent sounds like a lot, but it's a relative term. I doubt it would be as impressive if we were given the actual number. They may be the fourth biggest party now, but by what margin? I'll wager there's a gulf between them and the third biggest. They're bragging, take it with a pinch of salt.

Guys, guys, guys - it's really simple: -Xfqkdh5Js4 So you see, when you pirate games they fall through a black hole in space.

I can tell you that when I run games in wine I often have to crack them because the DRM is Windows only. I know it sounds pretty retarded, to crack a game that you own, but it might do the trick.

The greatest headlines in the world (and other weird news stories)

Rape is not terribly funny, but this line made me smile: They make it sound like she was just a bit miffed. -
Idle Thumbs 25: Pause Theme from Battletoads

RE achievements, I think they're great when you're just dicking around in a game having a good time going "Hey, I wonder if I can get over there" or whatever and the game unexpectedly rewards your curiosity. The problem is when your reason for getting over to this hard to reach place is because you're actively seeking an achievement as opposed to just to seeing if you can. I'd love to see achievements presented as a private, personal collection of easter eggs that you've found rather than a way to extend a digital penis you can wave in your friend's faces. -
Absolutely nothing! Wait ... that's not right

Oh elmuerte, that is devine divine:tup:

I threw my controller across the room in frustration when I was about a quarter of the way through and haven't picked it up again since. Does it get any better as you progress? I might have another bash at it if it does. I heard the ending was shit though.

I've been seeing these on my way into London and it makes me sad every time. The only possible purpose is to encourage a sense of fear - the police will never get any decent information from this and they know it. It would be funny if it weren't really happening
-
Well if you roughly know who all the characters are you should be ok. The character development doesn't really start until episode 6 or 7 anyway. I'd suggest you watch episode 8 and see how you feel then.
-
I've also found some of it borderline unwatchable, in particular episode 7, but episodes 8 and 9 are both really outstanding.

Basically yeah, although Tornquist is an order of magnitude worse than Whedon in this regard. Also, Whedon is extremely funny and has a knack for carefully weaving symbolism into his stories. Tonquist tries to ape this but his comedic repertoire consists entirely of sarcasm and his attempts at metaphor are clumsy and ham-fisted.

I was hoping someone might ask, but I'll still try to keep this as terse as possible. Also as a quick note, this is all wild speculation and could be a load of old codswallop - I don't think any of this is necessarily right. So, first of all there's Tim running around in his house jumping in doors that lead to other worlds. In one of the books in World 4, Tim talks about "wandering from place to place and noticing how he feels" and I think that he is doing the same thing in his home. Each room in his home provokes a feeling and the world contained within that room represents his thoughts and reflections upon that feeling. Then there's the business of the princess. One of the main themes of Braid is that events can mean different things when viewed from different perspectives (the most obvious example being the final level) and I believe the story is no different. I think the story chronicles three relationships from Tim's past that, in his mind, he has braided (HA!) into one allegorical tale about a quest for a princess - "Memories of their relationship have become muddled, replaced wholesale". 1) The Princess as Tim's wife/girlfriend. Tim had a desire to feel needed and in control. He wanted to be the knight in shining armour that protected and looked after his other half, but in trying to do so he was overbearing; making her feel trapped and constricted. Eventually he drove her away, never to return. See: World 2, Books 1 - 5 World 3, Book 2 World 5, Book 1 World 1, Level 1 (the last level) Epilogue, Books 1, alternative 1 2) The Princess as Tim's mother. Tim's relationship with his mother mirrors in may ways his relationship with the wife/girlfriend. Tim grew up resenting his mother, quarrelling with her often. Feeling trapped and unhappy, Tim left for university as soon as he could and didn't return for a long time. As he got older, Tim realised that his mother loved him and was trying to raise him as best she could. The speculation broadens here, but I think the ring discussed in World 6 might be his mother's wedding ring. If true, this may suggest that she passed away and left him the ring. Perhaps she died before they were able to make peace and he wears the ring out of guilt? See: World 2, Books 1 - 5 World 3, Books 1, 3, 4 and 5 World 4, Books 1 and 2 World 5, Book 2 World 6, Books 1 - 4 Epilogue, Books 1, alternative 1, 4 and alternative 4 3) The Princess as the atom bomb Tim was a scientist working working on the development of the atomic bomb. This was the culmination of Tim's obsession with learning and his yearning to bend the world around him to his will. After the testing the bomb he realises that this weapon could destroy the world and that he would be, at least partly, responsible for that. See: World 2, Books 1 - 5 World 3, Book 2 World 1, Books 5 and 6 Epilogue, Books 2, alternative 2, 3, alternative 3, I've glossed over parts and skipped details for the sake of keeping the length of the post down, but that's the gist of what I currently think the game is about.

You know, I thought that exact same thing whilst playing TLJ/Dreamfall.
-
Well that was utterly, utterly fantastic. I think I could write an essay on my interpretation of the "story" of braid, but I'm sure nobody would want to read it. I'll just say that I've been thinking about this game, and what it means, pretty much non-stop all weekend, in a way that I have about no other game before.
-
Tornquist is great at settings and overall plots, but his characters are irritating and his dialogue makes me want to vomit. I've never played an MMO but I'm guessing the vast majority of the people you interact with will be other players, rather than fictional characters, which will play to his strengths as a writer. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Braid just stole my day So far I've been enjoying the pants off of this game, but it is turning a bit - I'm sure half the levels in World 5 can't be soluble, they just can't be.

Quoted, as the kids say, for truth.
