  1. you know what i hate more? when you have a problem to solve, say for example you have to break through a wall or something, and you have an item in your inventory that would according to logic to the job for you, say a hammer, but you cant use it. instead you have to search the fucking room for, i dunno, a toothpick or something.

  2. I'll try that, thanks! The time consuming part of it is the chr-biped affiliation, if you will. And I will. But screw it, if I have enough time to forum about it I prob have enough time to just go do it!

  3. That's not backwards compatibility, that's forward compatibility.

    You're dead right.

Of course, that's not help you're giving me, that's pedantics.

Also, thanks synthetic, but I have waaaay too much rendering to do to do it on one computer. I hate my life. It wouldn't suck so much if all the bipeds didn't have to have 40 tiny spheres attached at precise points around the body, which all have to associated with whatever bone's nearest. I fucking hate max.

  4. Hello everybody,

Does anyone know where I can find a plugin/if such a plugin exists that makes 3ds max backwards compatible? As in, files that I've (painstakingly) created in version 9 aren't openable by 8. I have 7 computers at my disposal to render in 8, and all my bipeds are created (painstakingly) in 9. I really, REALLY don't want to have to redo all that work. All the bipeds have skins and mocap files associated with them.

    Any takers?

  5. Where's Joanna, isn't she meant to be doing a thesis on this?

    hello!

Jo is currently looking at hands and the uncanny effect. hands are important. Jo is also submitting to APGV in august in LA - wahoo!

its so weird. gamers have a completely different take on the valley than do scientists. we'd rarely use highly photoreal models, because were not using facial closeups at the minute. the discussion of photorealism in games is, in my opinion, getting a little too carried away with the notion. As in, i do some stuff on perceptual equivalence of real and virtual models, and there are some neuroscience papers that show that different neural areas are activated when looking at real and not-quite-real humans. Getting to the stage where we can incite the same neural subsystems using virtual and real STILLS is going to be a challenge, never mind movies, and extrapolating that to a maybe 30 hour game where the virtual is interacting with other virtuals and its environment is going to take some time. one of our colleagues in carnagie mellon thinks its to do with fear of death and that itll never be crossed. i think it will, but considering all the work it takes to accurately light one patch of skin....i think it'll be a while.

    that's just me though.

  6. Once I ate a tub of really very salty salt n vinegar pringles in one sitting. In about half an hour. It became like a motor reflex thing, there I was, studying, mindlessly eating one minute, the next I was puking, ahem, my ring up, if you will. The combination of the salt and the crispiness of the crisps tore my throat to shreds, so I ended up puking blood, bile and salt for about half an hour. It was horrific.

Also, do you ever notice that sometimes when you drink something you haven't drunk in ages you think to yourself, "this tastes a bit like vomit", and then you realise that it's because that's what you last experienced it as?

  7. i lost the wii in a vicious/rather amicable custody battle, and i'm not talking to link at the moment cos he's a little shithead. i'm back in college after 3 weeks of solid drinking and i seem to have forgotten everything. am feeling very "goodbye, world!" WOW. those emo kids idolise me.

um, sorry about your wife n child. thats the worst thing about us nemo kids, very selfish you see.

    /me strokes emo-jo

Shh, shh... I'm told it'll get better, honest!

Mrs V's trapped in bed with acute tonsillitis at the moment, whilst T rages all night until 4am fighting a persistent virus. So yes, it's seeming pretty shit this end of things.

I'm trying to keep a positive outlook for the moment -- at least until the bailiffs come knocking. ;(

  8. Er, yes... surely it come from root? I've always thought that... from way back when people used to say 'root!'. It's the same as saying 'owned'... or 'pwned'.

I got an early christmas present - a toaster that puts hello kitty's face on the toast and a t shirt that says "i pwn boys". i heart it.

  9. has anyone gone to see "i'm not there" yet? um, don't. especially if you're a dylan fan. actually, only if you're a dylan fan. no one else would be able to sit through it. pretentious in parts, shite in other parts, richard gere in yet other parts, this film has no right to be over 2 hours long.

right, i'm off to London for the weekend. pray for me.
