  1. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

For fans of Orson Welles. V13xoo-rLmc
  2. The Last Guardian

Some things I've heard: 1. The damn bird eats enemies; there was footage of that at E3 that they didn't show the public. 2. It's called Toriko (and Wikipedia confirms). 3. The graphics engine has been given a major update recently; the footage they showed wasn't finished yet.
  3. I write. Although what I post on Mixnmojo is not indicative, a lot of people think my (other) writing is good and they laugh at it too (in a good way), but I don't do enough of it. I've been pushing myself now, doing wildly experimental pieces and then posting them on Facebook for people to comment on. I'm still at the "Trying to emulate my idols phase,"* but hey. Oh, and also it's not a conscious thing, I've been told that my writing is similar to Erik Wolpaw's, in this case as compared to this interview (I know, I know, it looks like I ripped it off, but trust me when I say I didn't). I even did a Kroms vs Michael Bay thing when Transformers 2 came out that was a bit too similar to Romero vs Erik for me to post, as my friend Brent pointed-out. I hadn't even heard of Old Man Murray before that. I also draw a bit, but I'm not as good as I want to be. I used to be more interested in it, but then an unfortunate accident (my mum opening my sketchbook, finding female anatomy and then laughing at me about it) sort of killed that. I do get inspired enough to try again when I look at a painting I really like or something. Other than that...I find myself trying to come up with creative solutions to problems, so for example I've lately taken to hanging my jeans on my bedroom wall to make it a bit less empty whilst doing something with my old jeans. I'm getting back into shape, so any pair of jeans that gets too big for me goes up. I code a lot, something like 6, 7 hours a day, and I'm slowly but surely getting good at that. Uhhh...I play piano sometimes, and make MixCDs, paint their covers, etc. What about you guys? *Tim Schafer, Lester Bangs and William Shakespeare, plus a bunch of others. Don't laugh at the WillieShakes part; that man was an awesome writer.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

Someone linked to some BBC documentary on noir a while back, but I can't find it. Could you tell me what it was called? I'd love to see it, but can't access BBC Videos outside of the UK.
  5. Books, books, books...

I wanted to recommend Watchmen. I finished it two weeks ago and I can honestly say I have not been thinking of anything else since (except for you, Tales of Monkey Island). I won't get into specifics, but, man, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons did a fantastic job of making sure it worked purely as a graphic novel. Everything from the framing and choice of colour to how much detail they put in the panels made the story (the incredibly gripping story) so much more effective. The characters themselves are actual human beings - hurt and broken, trying to make sense of it all. And they're unique; I don't think I've ever come across anyone as fascinating as Dr. Manhattan or Rorschach. You have to read Watchmen. Currently reading The Stand, enjoying it very much.
  6. Books, books, books...

Deadeye Dick, I guess? I've only read that and Slaughterhouse-Five; both great.
  7. DeathSpank

Gameplay teaser. Those screenies do NOT do it justice.
  8. First game you remember playing

First game: one of the games on Super Mario All-Stars (I think it was Mario 3). My dad had taste! First game that blew my mind: Curse of Monkey Island.
  9. Movie/TV recommendations

"As opposed to other excellent films." - IGN.com Nah, I'm trippin'. It IS apparently a good film, and ya missin' out if you don' check it.
  10. Books, books, books...

I believe that was Arthur C. Clarke.
  11. DeathSpank

I liked this one a lot.
  12. Worst Journalism of All Time?

It's the XD that makes it. They took that as part of the drink's name.
  13. Life

To be honest, get yourself busy and let that void heal-up. Learn that love is 80% brainwork, 20% heart. And that was my fault. No-one had heard anything about her, and calling her house yielded a death threat from her stepdad ("If you ever call this house again I'll come over and slit your fucking throat you fucking -- " "Yeah, I'm actually recording this conversation" *my roommate bursts out laughing* "Oh shit -- " *hangs up*), so I just started jumping to conclusions till I got that email.
  14. Life

This reminds me of...not my last girlfriend, the one before that. We were walking sometime in the afternoon, just silly conversation. She mentions that she lived in Malaysia for six years. I ask her why, and she says, in a completely offhand way, "Oh, I was there when I was kidnapped." It was probably the most wtf moment of my life, but explained all these issues she had. She'd been kidnapped by her dad, and her new stepdad wasn't much better, beating her and all (I could never do anything about it, since I didn't know where she lived...she was 19 at the time). In the end she up and left Canada without telling anyone, not even me, and I honestly spent a whole month or so thinking she'd died. I later got an email from her telling me she'd left her family and was living with her grandma in Lebanon. But I hate the guilt. "She's my girlfriend, she's got issues...Shouldn't I be actively trying to help her?" And I did try, but, well, circumstances didn't help. I guess this story had an open ending. Go for it! Merci, mademoiselle. Actually, Thunderpeel, her advice works. Exercise helps a lot, especially because you're too damn exhausted at the end to think about much when you go to sleep. I'm not thin again yet, but what I've been doing is taking small satisfaction everyday, so I started out by running 2Kms, and increasing that distance by 100 meters a day (I take Fridays off). I'm now up to 5.8kms Any hurt I feel about the downturn my life's taken is gone away, I gain a bit of satisfaction from pushing myself and I spend the rest of my energy re-building it. It really works.
  15. Tales of Monkey Island

This would be excellent! I hope you guys do it!
  16. Tales of Monkey Island

So...do you animate, Jake, or do you code things like a transition? Or is it both? (I'm Googling to find out, but I'm interested in what you did for Tales, to learn.) Also: Pixies in November. Wow. I'm envious.
  17. Tales of Monkey Island

I'm 20; I played the Lucas games when I was 17. If there's anything I don't miss, it's highschool. I'm not saying now. I was just thinking that blending 2D with 3D is probably the way to go, and that, at some point in the future, I'd be interested in seeing what Telltale did with it. Even Glen Keane was doing it for the new Rapunzel movie, before he had to step down. Regardless, I love Monkey Island too, and I think the art team did a stellar job.
  18. Tales of Monkey Island

I don't want to sound like a dick or anything, but is there any way at all that Telltale could merge future games with 2D? See, I've been playing Curse of MI again and although I love Tales (and I love it a lot), I can't help feeling that Monkey Island does need some sort of blend with 2D, sort of the way . See, W&G looks unbelievably good in 3D; Strong Bad is perfect. Sam and Max is excellent (especially with the art style they went for). But Monkey, I think, needs a 2D look to it. I always thought there'd be a way to get the advantages of 3D with the timeless look of good 2D art. I can't help but feel that, if it weren't for the great art talent at Telltale, the game would've looked crummy (this is apart from writing, acting, puzzles, etc, and the little touches, like the wind, that make the game). Also can't help but feel it will look that way in a few years regardless. Just curiosity; wondering if anyone can satisfy it.
  19. Brütal Legend overload...!

Brutal Legend is a trending topic on Twitter! So awesome.
  20. Tales of Monkey Island

You can try going over to it
  21. Tales of Monkey Island

Well, I finished it two days ago (had to review for Mixnmojo). It's amazing. If they keep it up with the last three episodes then TMI will end-up being the best of the Monkey Island games.
  22. Tales of Monkey Island

I'm kind of in a rush, so I didn't read the whole forum, but Lasseter has been a fan of Miyazaki for years and years. Everyone at Disney has. Bill Tiller: "I was lucky to have gone to a school that had such great story tellers for teachers, and one of them was the great Disney animator Glenn Keane. And during one of his classes he brought in a clip from an animated movie done by this Japanese director named Miyazaki. The scene was this beautiful bus stop in the rain where two girls are waiting for their father to return." (source). Even though I do think that Lasster is NOT "the next Walt Disney", I do think he's a very talented director and has managed to constantly make and produce great films. Cars wasn't very good, but there's bound to be a clunker sometimes. And Pixar is a very collaborative environment; I remember someone saying that, if it weren't for the guilds, they would just put a list of everyone who worked on the movie (I guess like the way Valve does it).
  23. Do you do anything creative in your free time?

I don't. I just cram everything into everywhere and have a strict schedule. When I'm in a car, I write. When I'm reading the news of the day or checking internet forums, I code. Sometimes it takes me three hours to finish a post because I keep on looking at Java instead. Instead of taking a nap or taking a break, I start coding. I usually am so exhausted by nightfall that I read one or two chapters then go to sleep. But yeah. It's all in the scheduling. Keep in mind, I don't code seven hours in a row. And I don't always have some fingerpuppet to make, etc. Some days are busier than others.
  24. Do you do anything creative in your free time?

Thank you! Nah, you've got talent. That Portishead picture (I am fucking jealous you saw them perform by the way) should've been, "This is the start," not the peak. I also really like the stuff you've made. Those glowing bottles are something I've been trying to make for a while (also to decorate my room while using them to practice lighting painting).
  25. Do you do anything creative in your free time?

Heh, as a (somewhat evil) side note, I think it's funny how your post went from discussing what you enjoyed doing into what you're bad at. The thing with my mum went exactly like this (this was two, three years ago): Me: "Mum, that's just anatomy practice." "Sure." "No, look, I'm -- stop laughing, it was -- " "Hey, I'm not judging. It's normal for a boy your age." "NO! It isn't! MUM! It's just practice for -- " "It IS normal. Why are you beating yourself up like this?" "MUM, would you LIS - " "There's nothing wrong with you dear." "MUM FOR THE LOVE OF -- " "Hey, let's ask your sister. What do you think of this?" (By this point it's a mixture of laughter and concerned glances, seeing as that my self-confidence has clearly generated to the point of me thinking I'm 'not normal'.) Nothing humiliating about playing guitar to people on the street, by the way. Street musicians have a lovely purity about their music that most "professional" artists can't match. I'm sure you're great. Even if you can't play for shit, it's the spirit that counts. Check out The Shaggs for proof.
