The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Sticking with the Nirvana theme, I haven't been into mashups for a number of years now, but this has to be heard to believe how awesome it actually is: JNUTYHJrutw -
Not big, not clever, very stupid, and quite... Yes, it's the movie event of the year: Human Centipede! 9wmTv2nqTHo

Randomly stumbled across this ace video for Dancing Pigeons' equally excellent track Ritalin: eGbucSjSLDw I dub thee "Bit-Pop". NB: That's a MySpace link up there btw, so click with caution if such things offend you. -
More of this sort of thing, 'blix.

Verily, I shall. I enjoyed your podcast about Inception, particular the various theories and conjecture you all talked about. Which got me thinking... That's my twist on things anyway.

Sweet zombie baby Jebus, if only...

I plopped down my £8.50 for the alpha at lunchtime today. I've still not played it, but I like the game's style and I'm fascinated by the premise.

Verily, I shall. PS: Your 'cast needs more "ast" in the title.

That reminds me about the "squatting incident"; rolling around trying to dodge Patters' car, whilst filling it with lead, when I killed him and the car trundled to a stop next to me - on fire - and promptly exploded. Good times.

1st time I rode into the compound on my scooter, came around the corner and you blasted me with your RPG. 2nd time I respawned nearby, behind a crate in the compound next to that same corner. I rode out and got caught sideways against the front of Patters' car as he came through. You fired at the car, but hit my scooter instead; I was stuck to the front of the car and couldn't move. Instant ragdoll firework. I had trouble breathing/swearing for a moment or two afterwards...

Yes indeed--welcome, new Thumbs! Sorry I couldn't hang around for too long, though we were never going to top that human-scooter shield episode I think...

In more televisual news, Channel 4 have released the entirety of Garth Marenghi's Dark Place onto YouTube. Note that the episodes are listed in reverse order--the first one's at the bottom. If you've not seen it before, enjoy quirky comedy and taking the piss out of 70s and 80s TV tropes, do fill your eyeballs.

Rotation over descent? #strawsclutched I'm planting my Inception flag in the sand, and this bit of sand has "FUCKING ACES" spraypainted on it in 6ft-high hot neon pink letters. I think the "smart, but not smug" thing sums it up nicely for me. I was very pleased to have seen this in the cinema, and I'm looking forward to watching it again at home in the future (along with Mrs V). ~~~~ I also saw Toy Story 3 last week. Took Mrs V and the kids along and we all really enjoyed it. Stand-out bits for me were: before the film proper starts; wonderfully realised and really nice messaging. near the end; . ~~~~ Both films are particular cinematic highlights for me so far this year.

I was, but lets play it by ear. Last week was a washout for Thumbs multiplayer, so we'll see who turns up and decide then.

Not that I'm personally a huge JRPG fan, but I'm sure this news will excite plenty of others.

That sounds encouraging. Last 3D level I built for a game was the original Quake; it had a burning car in it. Might download the Alien Swarm SDK and have a poke about this week sometime in that case. It would be great to make something again after so long, especially to play with other people. Edit¹ - Also just found this, but haven't watched it through yet: Edit² - And the SDK forum over on Black Cat Games would probably be a sensible place to start as well.
-
Got to play Alien Swarm for a decent session yesterday. We didn't win, but had a lot of fun all the same--so much so I'm interested in getting the SDK and seeing how tricky it might be to build new levels. from me!

These were all quickly taken down, except for The Sacrifice and Voyage in Time. Turns out the "public domain" claim was false: And I was hoping to rewatch Stalker tonight, too...

Not fussed about the video one way or the other, but the track's wicked. -

This is, indeed, highly agreeable. For those who love electronic music, and those who remain yet unconvinced of the merits of Dubstep, please could you direct your attentions to Soulshape's frankly astonishing All These Worlds. It's by far the best collection of the genre I've heard to date, and one of the very best mix sets I've heard so far this year. I'm forcibly rationing myself not to listen to it more than once every few days; it's that fucking good. By twenty-five minutes in, it's truly immense, and doesn't drop right to the last track. -
Loved that when I were a wee lad. Still aces, especially with the updated lyrics.

When the balloon travels through several rings without hitting them, this is a deeply beautiful thing. Almost gives the balloon a life of its own, too.

For the very little it's undoubtedly worth, I found Stalker generally quite uncomfortable to sit through from beginning to end. Not because it's badly made, but because of how subtly I think it torments the viewer. Right from the opening shot, taking in the consummately bleak outlook for the main character and then slowly drawing out into the devastation and oppressive military presence clearly evident throughout the first half really weighs in on the viewer--and without any real release. I'll admit this is coloured somewhat by having read the original fiction, and having spent a fair amount of time playing the first game beforehand. But it's the way the film shifts between it's dream-like states and nightmare schizoid episodes for the lead character that really got to me. It just builds and builds with no release.

Slightly aggrieved there's no download option, but a superb and wonderful act nonetheless. I didn't know Solaris was a Tarkovsky film originally. I've been meaning to watch the Clooney remake for a long time.
