  1. Borderlands

Yeah. The exaggerated characters is the only thing that really bothers me. It looked like it was shaping up to be such a nice gritty game. And according to Wikipedia (however reliable a source that is), the black border effect is a form of cell-shading.
  2. Borderlands

It got the Prince of Persia treatment. Isn't that cel-shading, albeit with high texture resolutions?
  3. Windosill

    Haha. Got it.
  4. Windosill

But if I pay $50 dollars for a game I finish in 8-10 hours. At that rate the game would have to be 2 hours long for it to be worth it. But that's not the point. It may get more drawn out, or interactive, but paying $3 for an admittedly well-designed flash toy with (apparently) zero replay value just doesn't seem worth it. Anyone whose played it want to give any arguments to the contrary?
  5. Windosill

Reminds me of Eyemaze's stuff. I don't think I can justify paying even $3 for a game which has a demo (reportedly comprising 50% of the full game) that I was done with in literally 10-15 minutes.

Anyone see Sit Down Shut Up yet? It's abysmal. Sorry Mitch Hurwitz. I still love Arrested Development.
  8. Girl Is So Scary

    I'm liking it. I can't turn away.
  9. Shadow of the Colossus: the movie

My friend and I discussed remaking Pokemon as a serious actioner Transformers style.
  10. Shadow of the Colossus: the movie

    probably not.
  11. Shadow of the Colossus: the movie

It works because it understands it's relationship to the medium and tries to adopt the visceral, personal feel of the game as opposed to taking a straight-on, refined approach to action.
  12. Braid

Can we get the cliff-notes version. I was unsure of what to make of the story. I got the atomic bomb reference, but besides that and a few other clues, I don't know what else supported the (popular) theory that the princess represents the A-bomb.
  13. Braid

Just finished it today. The last level was absolutely brilliant. I felt the same emotional epiphany I had at that critical turning point in Portal. Amazing game. Perfect example of an indie game surpassing many mainstream titles in almost every category.
  14. Braid

Any idea why we can't buy on Steam yet?
  15. The Last Express

Mine was the big box, and came with a Prima guide and I think a black and white instruction manual. Don't know if that helps.
  16. Will we ever stop calling old games "retro"?

Along with it's rapid development, it may have something to do with the changing hardware and the fact that, while methods and stylistic techniques in movies and print have changed over the years, the method of delivery has remained relatively the same, while the style of a video game is almost inextricably linked to it's hardware (traditionally) so a game like Mario is a more obvious departure from some modern platformers than Metropolis is from Transformers. That's not a fully formulated thought, but I think there's a gem of an explanation somewhere in there.
  17. Will we ever stop calling old games "retro"?

I though retro referred to things that were made in a style reminiscent of an earlier time. Isn't an old game, book, or movie just old (or "classic")?

Just saw yesterday. Absolutely unbelievable. It was suspenseful, cute, depressing, romantic all at once. Amazing.
  19. Books, books, books...

Oh man, The Road. I got about two 3rds of the way through it before I just got bored. Wasn't really my cup of tea (or rather, I loved it at first, but it was just too much of the same).
  20. Books, books, books...

Stephenson is incredible. Snow Crash and Diamond Age are independently two of my favorite novels. Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake was amazing as well. I've heard great things about, and read excerpts from, Godel Escher Bach. For something different, check out Italo Calvino. Invisible Cities was really interesting, and I'm in the middle of reading If on a Winter's Night a Traveler, which is essentially a fictional story about reading fictional stories, written in the 2nd person.
  21. Battlestar Galactica Final Season Thread

Ironically, Joss Whedon plans arcs seasons in advance, and yet Dollhouse has, up to now, been relatively unspectacular.
  22. Lego Pirates

Ugh. I remember trying to replicate Star Wars vehicles before the licensed sets came out, and I was ecstatic when I got the chance to play with little Lego lightsabers, but I don't like what Lego has become. I still love the older sets (I stopped buying Lego around the time of the first generation of Bioncicles) but looking at the sets out now, there are often times when there is not a single product out that isn't either a licensed property or a Bionicle spin-off. It's getting better now, but: "Come on!"- GOB Bluth
  23. Battlestar Galactica Final Season Thread

Yeah, agreed. Starbuck seemed like a bit of a cop out, but only because we know that Ron Moore wrote her return before he had figured out what it meant. In the end, though, the characters (almost) all had great endings, with Baltar & Six and Adama & Rosalyn being particularly well done. How about that bit at the end? It was nice to end on an upbeat like that.
  24. BioShock 2

How about Big Daddy fights? It seems to me that that still fits the mood of the original game, and if you became a greater target the more sisters you collect, I could see them turning it into a very tense experience.
  25. Clever reinvention...?

In general, with the exception of BSG, SciFi's (or SyFy's) programming isn't worth worrying about anyway. I don't understand their business model. They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars producing bad C-Movies and Ghost Hunter spin-offs, I guess you can still find syndicated shows like some of the Star Treks but my point is, in my mind, the decision to change the name to SyFy is maybe closer to the identity the channel has already built for itself.
