Some HD bike porn*: http://vimeo.com/14600175 *n.b. Not actually porn. I don't usually go for DVDs of MTB, snowboarding, etc., but unlike most this one seems to have a really strong focus on aesthetics and natural beauty.

Interesting to see a Senator pick up the "There will be no middle class if this trend continues" line. I've read a few people talking about the evaporation of middle class wealth due to the banking/housing crisis, but no one at that level before. Thunderpeel.

  5. Steam Trezer Hunt

Gah, was editing my post. It appears to be a sale in a Skinner box. Am I wrong?
  6. Steam Trezer Hunt

This kind of sickens me. It's a sale in a Skinner box :/ Never have so many done so much to render the word "achievement" meaningless. Is it really doling out achievements for buying and just playing games?

Probably Frontier or Ninja Theory, can't be sure though. The thing I most hate about that kind of thinking is that it usually couched as a reaction to some sort of fictitious moral decline, and will just move on to targeting one group after another. -- In other news, I joined a rather large non-games forum recently, and it seems to be mostly unmoderated and full of twats who spend as much time posting images of heavily photoshopped women and their breasts as they do bragging about kit. I forgot what other communities were like. This place spoils us.

The nationalists were becoming popular here in the UK, but got routed in the last election. People were worried they'd make further gains, but instead they lost practically everything they had and started to implode. Hopefully, what the Tories and Lib Dems are doing won't cause a swing back. Something that's really bugging me about the student demos is that anti-student prejudice is common here in the UK, and a lot of people seem to be using the news as an excuse to vent that prejudice. The focus of news on a violent minority is exaggerating it too. So, in a bunch of discussions I'm seeing, suddenly students are "greedy fucks" for not wanting their fees tripled (Humans in "selfishly motivated" SHOCKER!). All the violent ones "Should be shot". Students should apparently never go out and have a good time; everyone should apparently be an engineer, scientist or plumber. All degrees involving the arts and humanities are "useless" and it's "just" to put the fees way up. I've held back from any debates on it so far, but I don't think I can hear this shit again before wading in. I don't think UK media is quite as screwed as in America, but here we have the Daily Mail, a xenophobic right-wing rag that makes things up, rarely apologises, and whenever they do they generally find an immediate way to grind the same ax again. Politicians live in fear of it, and the editor, Paul Dacre, also happens to be chairman of the Press Complaints Commission I thought I already knew how gullible and easily led people are, but the news and opinions I'm hearing around me are making me really sad.
  10. Tomb Raider

All very, very well put Lobotomy
  11. Tomb Raider

I enjoyed Underworld, it being the first time I'd picked up a Tomb Raider game since the very first. Like Rodi says though, a lot of the things surrounding it bug me. (Also the shitty motorbike sections and cutscenes).
  12. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Fair enough. I don't particularly like the cover and didn't mean to defend it. I also suspect they're going for some crappy symbolism with the use of red white and blue. I'm always conscious that there's a chance the creators of anything I like are twats. It used to worry me, but I started separating output from the person.
  13. Never playing Super Meat Boy again.

Aww man : ( Sorry to hear this. Do trigger games vary from person to person, or is it likely that, say, SMB would be dangerous for all epilepsy sufferers? If so, a site where epileptic gamers could leave reports would probably be a good idea.

Yufster once named a black and white cat Mister Manager, which is a fine name for a cat.

I would rather have the freezing fog. Came off my bike at a very low speed this morning, sideways, on about 3 inches of ice. It was funny at the time and didn't hurt, but now I realise it screwed my lower back.
  16. Tomb Raider

This could be an extremely important* turning point for video games: The moment when, in developer interviews containing the question "What are your inspirations?", a third was found beyond Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. This could be the Citizen Kane of Tomb Raiders. * this is a sarcasterisk.

Up here in the midlands, many things are encased in ice. Roads are clear, but off them all of the snow is hanging around, and has been severely compacted then refrozen.

Slightly relieved that it was just the thumbnails at that link that were cutting off her head, and not the magazine pages. She almost looks like people I actually know in those pics. Every reiteration though, it's like: "Hey, we made her slightly less like a blow up doll. So now it's healthy for us to over-sexualise her".
  20. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I have no idea why they named their album "Prostitute", but if I boycotted musicians on their values or inferences about them, my music collection would probably be minuscule. I know at least one atheist who won't listen to Justice on account of the cross imagery, yet they've said in public that they're not Christians and it was just an exercise in branding. That has probably now offended some Christians into not listening to them. All of this has very little to do with the actual music.

Map makers put fictitious things in their maps to make it easy to check whether or not someone is ripping off their data: http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/trap-rooms.html

Are me and Wrestlevania seriously the only two people here who find it hilarious?
  24. Post your face!

I didn't get to see the kids, but I think they were pleased. They got more presents than in previous years. Long version: My friend is a social worker, and usually they have a party for all the kids who are in foster care, and give each of them a present. Because of all the government cuts, they didn't have the budget this year, so started an appeal on Twitter. Within an evening it was being retweeted and someone had built a website for them. They got more new toys, teddies, comics etc. donated than they've been able to afford before, and I was delivering the things donated by all the people from the local hackspace in time for them to be wrapped for the party.
