I agree on Gondry Gerbil; I loved Eternal Sunshine and a lot of his music videos, but anything I've seen from Be Kind Rewind on has been a lot less coherent.

+1, that's a great film. Currently really enjoying Being Human. Wasn't so bothered about it after the first series, but I just caught up on Series 2 and 3, and they're pretty good.

Penetration testing an MMO isn't exactly your run of the mill games testing job TP. Totally up for some UK thumbs camping I just got back from a week of snowboarding in Chamonix. Not only was it a really beautiful place, it was also just the ticket to let me unwind and think about my future. I'm also now *much* faster at boarding than I was last year. Going up to 10,000ft, seeing a glacier from a few thousand feet above, then taking a 7000 foot run all the way to the bottom of the valley was unreal. It was a black run and well beyond my ability, but having to stop regularly didn't really matter because, fuck, the view: http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/167911_10150110087018617_511063616_5988042_7575049_n.jpg

I handed in my notice at work today. A certain aspect of the job had simply become too annoying, and while I'd been patient in spades with it, on Monday it escalated to the point of enraging me. I waited all week to see if the feeling would abate, but it just got worse. I feel relieved, and nervous, but overall I made the right decision. There are offers of freelance work on the horizon.

Zing. That's what transforms your post from apocalyptic speculation to something that really makes me shudder.

Hah, I saw that on Twitter I really, really hope that Palin can never become president. American politics have become noticeably unhinged since I first became politically aware. Normally, I'm passively interested in the politics of other countries, but a super power with that kind of malady? Deeply concerned. Whatevs. Kittens! gppbrYIcR80

Maybe, but even with that environment, I think it would be quite porous to influence. Put that stupidiy out in public for longer, even more in view of the whole world than it is, with pressures of office upon it, and I'm not so sure her vanity wouldn't be worn down by a hunger for credibiity and a consequent need for help. Possibly the best we could hope for is a shambolic administration with occasional rebellions and firings. I am also far, far more worried about her pushing the big red button than I was about GWB doing it

Yeah, nice gig OssK! It sounds like you're going to do some very cool stuff that could bring the museum a lot of attention. Careful no one poaches the position out from under you. Congrats Dan too. It seems like an age since we were sat in the pavillion gardens; I'm glad your comedy doings have continued and expanded

That just means the people around her will start doing the driving. She's a suitable figurehead for people with heinous politics to charm and then act through, which I find doubly worrying.
  13. Pub, London, this Friday.

I'm doing an indie developer conference called World of Love at Channel 4 this Friday. It's completely sold out, BUT we'll be going to the pub afterward. We'll be in one of the rooms at the Barley Mow, on Horseferry Road, from about 5 that evening if any of you would like to come down and join us. It won't be like the show & yell thing last October, since we'll have been talking all day and probably just want to drink.

Sorry! Was very busy last week and forgot to invite Thumbs, as I'm pretty much left by myself to organise WoL. Ben, you can find Alice and Kerry on Twitter as @asponge and @reallyfancy. They're both lovely, but like a lot of UK indies, I only seem to get to speak to them either in passing when I'm tearing around organising stuff, or when I'm really drunk.

Sorry I definitely should have put that in spoiler tags with a warning before it. Rodi, sometimes that separation can really strengthen a friendship, or show that it was weak in the first place. There are a few people I actually see more often now they're in other countries rather than in the same city. Some friendships that seem strong fade away under those circumstances, but with others the rarity of contact seems to underline the bond, so we make more of an effort to see each other when we can. Moving will change things, but it won't destroy them

1-b78TKZIyw For all the negative things I've said about Duke, that trailer made me laugh quite loudly I like Gearbox a lot. I hope it has the same humour as Borderlands.

The good: I realised this week that I have only one major source of stress and negativity in my life, and I'm doing something about it. Even that is confined to just a part of my life. I've become very happy. I cycle places, I'm physically fitter and stronger than I've ever been, and I bought more tools and can now completely strip and service a bike. I'm going to get an old BMX to fix up for cheap, because I found out there's a small skate/BMX park about 400 metres from my house, and I've always wanted to learn to jump bikes properly. The bad: This afternoon I was working at home in the living room, and the dog started throwing up puddles of half digested shit that she'd evidently found in the garden and been eating all morning. Actual shit. I have never smelled anything like it. After I threw everything she puked on outside, and nuked the floor with bleach, we even had to hose down the patio too. There has never been a more appropriate time for:

Oh, and a recommendation: http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/2010/12/sotd-183-dustin-ohalloran-we-move-lightly/ Reading about the album made big bits of my brain light up one after another: Dustin O'Halloran: Ting Collaboration with Johann Johannsson: TING Collaboration with Adam Wiltzie from Stars of the Lid: TING TING TING TING TING
  20. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

They're comin' outta the goddamn walls! Note on Crystal Castles: I love their music. They've lifted some tunes wholesale from the chiptunes community before; some early songs were quickly renamed on their myspace then later removed after damning comparisons were posted. They also had to settle with an artist over artwork they lifted from him, and took several years to do so. They are described by Kieron Gillen thus: I don't let any of that stop me from listening to them, but it definitely takes the edge of any enthusiasm.

Ah, in that case I agree with you and James. There Will Be Blood was incredible. I think James is right that games haven't even reached the storytelling benchmark of even average films, because incredibly repetitive verbs don't make a great story. I did like the arc of Red Dead Redemption in which John Marston , but even with overly long dialogue and a hat tip to practically everything anyone has ever loved in a western, the story was essentially stretched thin between very long (enjoyable) repetitions of riding and shooting. Play and storytelling do cross paths sometimes, but in action neither requires the other. I don't believe they'll ever combine into one thing, or work together as efficiently as people seem to think.

  24. Internet Comics

Ooh, Jason Shiga Oglaf started as a porn comic, but the writer couldn't take it seriously and made it into comedy. It's sometimes very funny. A Softer World tends to be deliciously harsh, and wrong.

I saw 127 Hours last night. I didn't think it was a great film, but they ways they tried to make 127 hours of a man stuck in a crack interesting was… interesting. There was one moment where you could see just about every girl that came with a guy suddenly bury their head in boyfriend's shoulder Question from a friend: The actual scene wasn't as bad as I expected, and the film has some of the best use of sound I've heard. Overall, an inspiring story, but the execution felt gimmicky: We've been told, over and over, what's going to happen, then the film builds up to it. Kind of like the film wouldn't work without the marketing campaign. -- Also saw The Men Who Stare At Goats on iplayer. -- Find of the week through a friend: The Art of Negative Thinking (or Kunsten å tenke negativt). It's a black comedy about a disability support group. Its about them coping not just in the constraints of their disabilities, but within the lines drawn by the government too. I enjoyed it a lot.
