The hackspace is quite close to the telco exchange in Nottingham and we get about 8mbps. Living in a house across the road from the exchange a few years ago, we struggled to get up to 2. It really does seem to be pot luck, with huge variance between different ISPs renting the same copper from BT.

Nowhere in the UK. Pittsburgh renamed it "Sparkle Season" for nearly a decade though. You state it so well though. This: cuts through all kinds of dancing around the issue I've seen. There are some really crucial frames of reference missing from important discourse (I'm not saying that on the assumption I have them, more the assumption that I often don't).

I'm glad you didn't start that with "I'm not a paedophile" because that's always a dead giveaway, obv. Agreed with you though. I used to be quite against affirmative action, because I have seen it go weirdly wrong in a local college where lots of 18 years olds were behaving really badly, and it effectively created bureaucratic invincibility for some, but I realise that's not the norm. The more I live, the more I realise how privileged I am as a white dude and how easily I could ignore that and transmute it into a sense of entitlement (and probably still do, to an extent). Going to and organising a bunch of games and tech events has really underlined to me the dominance of white guys too. Also, yes, your English is always very good toblix. I know Norwegian and English are very close in grammar and many words are effectively synonyms, but you have a good vocabulary and an easy to read style of writing

A quote for the ages. The love that dare not speak its name, but does dare to fuck and play with ropes in public places. Edit: Here's a picture that is both comical and sad.

I knew (not very well) someone who died of lupus. Two months after she got married Half of her hair fell out when she was a kid, and apparently that's a classic sign, but the doctors didn't catch it.

I have always liked that Thumbs isn't that kind of gaming forum.

Way to go you indeed! That sounds terrible; congratulations on a clean bill of health.

How did we get to this from pictures of girls dressed as Link kissing each other?

It wasn't always smoking hot weather girls for the UK: There was also this guy on daytime TV, who would run around a giant floating map of the British Isles, and jump from Wales to Ireland to boot. The only video I can find is him being interrupted by a streaker: K-_TXUF-5mA

I hope they build spooky little monuments.

*outpouring of delight* Bought this last year and stalled on a later screen that I found impossible. Got this in the Humble Bundle too, looking forward to tinkering with the editor.

Mark Rein should totally get a Gears of War 3 tramp stamp.

I was going to say "Needs more war and xenophobia, 7/10", but then he got to

I enjoyed that TED talk, but it's a similar schtick to points and badges. A nice cognitive trick that works really well on people, but doesn't lead to a fulfilling experience if it's misused or overdone. Agree that Lost was shit for that reason, Kingz. I let season one annoy me all the way through expecting at least a little closure, then the first episode of season 2 made me utter "Oh for fucks sake" and never watch again. I'd like to try Twin Peaks. I've heard high praise for it, though some friends who were big fans did a weekend marathon of the lot and really can't stomach it now.

Would you majorly regret not going?

Ooh, wholeheartedly approved! I like this trend in books. The only onces I buy now are either so cheap that I'd happily recycle or pass them on when done with them, or so beautiful I'll want to keep them for a long time. There seems no point buying anything inbetween, and I liked the book Rogue Moon so much that I traded my disintegrating paperback for one of these. Also spotted this on Typcut this morning. Probably the most tasteful and beautiful poster I've ever seen for a club night: http://www.typcut.com/headup%20/under-the-mountain
