I am excited about this game. Also, Sno, you just dredged this up from my unconscious: Lktoanpc1VY That trailer goes properly mental by the end.

I think people mistake visible features for progress and discount any work on a codebase. I don't know, having bought Minecraft and seen lots of games worked on I don't have any qualms about the way Notch works. Maybe I'm mistaken, but this sounds like whining for Minecraft to be a non-profit enterprise. Using proceeds to fund other projects is how any industry continues to exist. Given the amount of time I spent in Minecraft on various servers, I got more than my $10 worth. Purple, I know you're trying to moderate your response, but many don't. When they bitch about their $10 like it was some form of major investment and GOD DAMN IT I AM A FAN YOU OWE ME NOTCH, that seems a little off to me. The amount of ownership that internet people will assume when a creator opens up a line of communication is terrifying.

I'm hoping he'll keep on tweaking it into his dotage, until we end up with a load of increasingly mad and inchoate edits.

A childhood friend's family used to hang jars with jam in the bottom and holes punched down through the lid. Wasps crawl in, can't get back out, and meet a sticky end. The jars used to fill up with them.

A lovely film Glad I'm not the only person who thought this. It was utter, utter shit, wasn't it? It came over like the writer was infatuated with all of the characters, had a big wank over them and assumed everyone else would join in.

Loved Red Dwarf when I was a kid, but not so much after going back to it recently. It's very crass, stupid and British. Overall, I'm a little fond of it. The first series had a really low budget and it shows. The next few really pick up, and I'd say it peaked with series four. If you want a sample of it, try the first episode to see if you like the premise, then if you're not too worried about spoilers or continuity, any of these episodes to show it at its best: Polymorph, Bodyswap, Camille, or DNA.

Love the way the tortoises apparently steered around Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

That's not how I read it. If you can go through that calmly, and not subsequently have nightmares or panic attacks, then that's a pretty amazing thing. Kudos to you, SSD, and congrats on the promotion. You said you don't think you're sure they know what they want to do with you; I hope it leads onto something worthwhile. At the very least it will give you something for your CV.

Oops. Happy third-day-after-your-Birthday, Rodi!

You're absolutely right about that. Sorry, bad comparison. I can't see them being as bad tonight; last night was probably the peak for most places. There's loads of rain forecast for tomorrow too.

If you're not willing to read the piece I linked, then please take whatever you're assuming I said and shove it up your poop flue, elmuerte. You're the only Thumb that has ever made it onto my ignore list, and you've been there quite a while because of your ignorant drive by snipes on people and persistent negativity. Basically, I can rely on everyone else to quote anything memorable you say. For instance, this from just the other day:

Here's an interesting piece on it: Boris Johnson has been on telly today saying "It's high time we stopped hearing these sociological explanations for what is simply just out and out criminality". It makes me sad to see politicians already trying to shut down these lines of thought and reinforce tabloid thinking.

As Sal says, they're not fighting for a cause. Like just about anyone commenting on this, I'm having to issue this caveat with it: I don't agree with the looting and property damage these people are dealing out. As Thunder says though, to call it mindless is simplistic. Excluding greed as a motive is also simplistic. Behind that though, people are angry. In the past few years we've had scandals with banks, MPs expenses, the press and the Police force, then on top of that spending cuts that disproportionately affect the poor. There is no trust left, and a lot of rage built up. Most people I know with any connection to these communities have said the same thing: This is not a surprise, and has been brewing for a long time. Peaceful protest has often led to no attention at all. Now they're rioting and finally getting it. The best response a lot of people seem to be able to muster is class chauvinism, which makes me as sad as the rioting does. It upsets me that the actions of a minority will now probably be used to grind down communities that have done no wrong and are already impoverished and struggling. As someone put it: It's a really fucked and largely self-perpetuating situation. If people could see the gaping holes in our ideal of meritocracy, maybe we'd be nearer to some solutions (edit: But instead we're stuck with a class divide as big as ever). It's been good to see how quickly people have taken it on themselves to protect small businesses and clean up. So far, Nottingham has gotten away fairly lightly. Thirty people burning cars and trying to get into businesses last night, but there were a hundred police out against them. The Hackspace is situated quite close to the neighbourhood it started in; our bin got torched but that's it.

I'd second recommendations for therapy if you feel you need it. I did a lot by myself, but only by being very studious about it, and progress was very slow. I also wouldn't dismiss anti-depressants the way I used to. I've known people who felt the need for them, and they helped. I like Dan's simile of them being like a pain killer; just be careful, and if you get some I'd say keep in mind the objective of being able to function without them at some point. We're kind of luckier in the UK, because limits on lobbying and advertising lead to pharmaceuticals not really getting the same hard sell as in the US.

Very good point. The same goes for some disabilities. Differentiating terms are coined, misused as insults, and variously reclaimed by groups. For instance, UK charity Scope used to be "The Spastics Society", until the terms spastic, spaz and spazmo became popular insults in the 1980s. "Special" became an acceptable word for a while, but now describing someone as special is generally an insult too. Unless you're regularly hanging out with people from pertinent groups, it can lead to awkward linguistic grey areas, and most people choose caution rather than risk offense.

Really sorry to hear all that, Orvidos and Miffy. -- Speedy: I was raised by religious lunatics telling I would live forever, then had to come to terms with mortality in my late teens. Not sure if this will help you or not, but mortality drives me away from complacency. Every day is more precious, given that I only have a finite number of them. Spending them worrying about death is no way to go about creating good days.

Yeah, the bastards. What a bunch of inconsiderate pricks.

A bit of context on that is DC removing Wonder Woman's trousers, shown in the subsequently posted but out of date image. DC are finding that whatever they do with that costume now, fans bitch endlessly. They've got themselves into a right sticky corner, just like this thread. I find the "But male characters are represented superficially too!" argument trite. They're a power fantasy for men more than a fuck fantasy for heterosexual women. Whereas, female characters tend to be fuck fantasies for heterosexual men. Regardless, in talking about comic and game characters from Mass Effect and DC, we're really debating things from the bottom end of the scale. I hereby dub the camp Batman in that image: FemBat.

I'd say it comes down to whether you think carrying on with your current gig is going to rot you from the inside out. There also might be more options than just the two you're looking at right now?
