Congrats. I am slightly jealous of your fibre, being on asymmetric copper cables put every-fucking-where in this town for cable TV about 15 years ago. I did get a living room upgrade at the weekend though. Until Sunday, there was a monster of a CRT and a huge square unit taking up far too much space. Now, plasma goodness and the housemate's PS3 has come out of hiding

Blu-Ray has indeed won, Toshiba have stopped making HDDVD players. A 360 can play normal DVDs, just nothing HD. MS are pushing for digital downloads, and some say the only reason they were backing a disc format at all was to make the format war costly for Sony.

Yeah , so the implications could be a red herring... or the interview might be a bluff. I'm thinking the former though.

wrt to feedback on the first episode showing characters changed a lot, it could easily just be their passing moods, so to speak. Still, even if that's the case they weren't very well contextualised.

Hah Never noticed that before. We had the same spam turn up over at Black Cat Games this weekend.

I'm sold, I have to get this. Dunno how I'll react - I loved Stalker, but still haven't gone back to dead rising. The setting just sounds amazing though. The cultural differences emerging in playing and developing games are fascinating. Everything in Western games has to be "fair and balanced", newbies protected, etc. In Chinese MMOs people will just grief and grief and grief a newbie until they can't play anymore and it's just viewed as a fact of life. Games like this and Stalker too have a kind of harshness not present in many Western games. I wonder just how much of the content at GDC is (unknowingly) not about game design, but about game design for Western markets?

There is some point to the bile. Passage, for instance, had quite a strong effect on me, but as game, it's not "good" or fun in the way we'd normally judge one. Even if you ignore that games are "meant to be fun", it just doesn't have any of the mechanics and feedback a game design normally would. There's been such a colossal vacuum in terms of a cultural fringe for games that I think a lot of gamers and developers are more inclined to become fans of anything different.

I read somewhere this week that the tax loophole he used is now closed.

I really hated Cloverfield for some reason. I suspect because I watched while I was travelling and had been alone for a few days, I wasn't really in the mood for something so desolate. I also found it kind of the opposite to Blair Witch: The characters in that were such a stupid bunch of infuriating assholes that right at the end I said "Oh thank fuck, the last one's dead". The characters in Cloverfield were likeable enough, so

That's a nice little game I completed it on my second go. I like the way it shifts on a balance between marking and memory - I first started using the diamonds to mark up to four squares each, then rows, but there are few enough that by the end it took a bit of cognitive work. It has a nice dynamic between the randomly highlighted squares and any attempts at method.

Weird campy fun pretty much nails it, and yes, season 4 was shit. I found Buffy great to switch off to after work about 8 years ago, but Firefly is an altogether better piece of TV.

I accept that VAT makes things more expensive here, but VAT is 17.5% (We don't pay sales tax calculated at registers, just import duties that business have to build into their operating costs and prices). Most companies that operate internationally seem to add a bit more on top, but doubling the price is ridiculous. I'm pretty outraged.

I think that's a good guess, most are pretty horrifying compared to here, even though they don't have ginger levels of perv going on.

A Children of Men series sounds like it could actually be interesting! It's become quite common to examine those kind of issues through the lens of a single (possibly psychopathic) character, and the film stuck with me so much because it was doing the same with a whole society. It felt really brief though - so much thought provoking stuff just flashed by in the background. I'd like to see a TV series do more with it, but wonder if it could sustain the same kind of intensity and future shock?

The idea of Bill and Ted being defiled by a remake justifies a full on weepy ;_; Short Circuit should not be remade for very different reasons. It should instead be defiled in any way that keeps it out of the public eye, then buried.
