Me and Scrobbs were having a conversation on Twitter today that I thought was really intersting. This post about user generated game design going really, really wrong sparked it: http://www.eldergame.com/2009/05/11/user-generated-quests-and-the-ruby-slippers/ I find this really interesting, and think it's the exact reason Eskil Steenberg is wrong to say "fire your game designer". Short term goals can short circuit long-term value, i.e. if we have an option of two missions with the same reward, and one is easy, we tend to go for the easy one. Tweets: And I missed this one, sorry Scrobbs

I was thinking along these lines too: a systemic relationship between tasks and reward, with the user either making a quest have having little to no control of the reward beyond maybe a category selection, or absolute choice over the reward, but the quest editor then makes them build a quest that matches up to the reward cost before it can be published. Some kind of distance+enemies+average completion time measurement of quests might work. Lots of people would still build dull missions (Beat up all the dragons in this square room. You did it, hoorah for you), just like they make shitty box maps for their FPS clans, but these would get voted down. A system like this would still have loopholes* and bugs in it, but it might reduce blatant abuse. * For instance, light levels can enormously affect the difficulty of something, but if a quest editor were to rate dark quests as more difficult, there could be all sorts of abuses of the lighting to create inconsequential darkness. People meta-gaming an editor designed to balance things would be interesting...

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

It's a good remix indeed. When I heard it on Newswipe, I really liked that it's essentially the opposite of all news themes. Still energetic and a bit epic, but happy instead of filled with dread and drama. -

I think to an extent this kind of things falls to our propensity to seek patterns even when there are none. Reviews can affect game sales, but they aren't necessarily connected. Jeff might as well have been railing against a lack of marketing, which can be an even bigger factor (*cough*Transformers*cough*). Ultimately, if noone out there is sticking up for your work, then you probably screwed up on something, like making it too obtuse. When you ask each game developer what constitutes a fair shake, you'll probably get a different answer form each one. Nitpicking on reviews between developers and reviewers would basically become like a fractal if given the opportunity.

Grand Thumb Auto XXVI: Chicks with 'Blix

I'm going to the cinema to see Coraline tomorrow, so... ¬¬ -
Yeah, seems likely it's a target render, which might also explain the abundance of humans and cow-like cows, if the artists were getting it done as quickly as possible and reusing some models. The vehicle design is pure BG&E with the tilt rotors and tow hook on the helicopter.

It makes me happy to have inspired you today Toblix.

Images not working here and your link is replaced with a "Duke wants YOU to stop stealing our bandwith 3drealms.com" image. I just noticed that their 404 page says 40Fnord - nice touch

I can add to this chorus, having once spent a couple of years unemployed and basically feeling worthless. Don't let the bastards get you down Rusalka, you're capable and smart whether the job market sucks or not.

I've heard this expression as long as I can remember. Not noticed it becoming any more or less common recently.

^ What he said Edit: The mob style chair leg stuff is just very, uh, WTF. The idea of a game as secret engine research project and marketing vehicle is very, very interesting. Edit edit: RPS comments: Source link is dead because the 3DR server is, but apparently confirmed on their forums by the author... I can see this is going to be an excellent games industry myth for years to come.

Yes, but regardless we still get fucked when large, powerful, or well known organisations start complaining. As for fair use, maybe but there's no such term in Twitter's TOS. We're abiding by them and will see if IGN complain any more. ossk well 1) I will join in your pedantry, and 1.5) I will recycle your number 3) I can understand why they might do that since using one of the main IGN accounts with lots of followers 4) promotes @igndotcom to all of their actual fans and 5) risks a bad reaction from anyone already following both. It was a sensible way to do it, even though calling it @IGNLegal is about as impressive as attorney@tiggershell.net. Ultimately, @igndotcom is happening on someone else's server, so rather than indulging in Leonard J. Crabs style antics we have to play by their rules. Doesn't mean we have to pull our affectionately vicious parodic punches though

It's pretty standard for someone to @twitter for issues, reporting abuse is one of the reasons they set the @twitter account up. Impersonators are generally a problem on twitter, so it's fair enough for anyone to take issue with confusion if they're trying to use it for something serious. While people mistaking @igndotcom for the real one was funny at first, people like Sony Pictures propagating it could cause it to snowball to the point where it would really fuck with them, so I'm not surprised they acted, nor would I blame them for it.

Thanks for spotting that and acting on it so quick. Twitter have closed the support ticket and we're still in business, so looks like it's all good now with just the bio edits

:( Like Signor says, Citizen's Advice Bureau is probably your best call.

I doubt worst bosses is the entire idea. He also polled twitter for examples of newsreaders losing the plot for newswipe, and that was only a bit of one of the shows.

Jake/Chris Has anyone from IGN approached you guys, or are you just preempting? Submitted by Jake: Thanks for looking out for it, but a name change is kinda overkill. TOS state that as long as the profile information makes it clear it's a parody account, that's fine, so I changed the bio: I'm pretty certain the account at present being @igndotcom is part of the reason people find it funny.
