Standard Wii controllers can't do 1:1 motion capture. They're just IR pointing devices with accelerometers working like a bunch of vague switches that you push by waving it around. The new Wii peripheral can do 1:1, but it's going to be a hard sell since (*cough*) people think that what it does is what the Wii already does. Also, these things aren't aimed at anyone who's comfortable with a controller. If you're feeling hate for the tech, go sit with the rest of the hardcore and have a flaccid wank while mumbling about how Nintendo doesn't love you anymore. I'm excited about these things as interesting toys to take apart, program for and generally fuck around with. Couldn't be arsed whatsoever for gaming. Likewise Natal: I think it will be a great interface, because joypads absolutely suck as controllers for using menus, watching DVDs, listening to music, etc. I'm pretty certain I'd rather play games with a pad than mime them though.

Even the living room/set they used comes across as dick swinging at Nintendo. Natal is plausible given some of the work that's been done at universities in recent years (a PhD student has been working on video image recognition and processing just up the road from me at Nottingham Uni's Mixed Reality Lab, for instance). As indicated in the live demo where it mixed the legs up, it's probably going to be temperamental as hell in changeable lighting conditions, with anything moving around in the background, and with bystanders moving too much.

Nadal is interesting. I was expecting that Rare might go the way of Bungie this year or next, but this gives MS quite a reason to hold on to them.

The Wii looks even more like a toy now. As far as getting input that clean is concerned, I'll believe it when I see it for real, and suspect that lighting and bystanders might interfere in all kinds of ways. Still. Pretty awesome.

Yeah, there was a lot of really poor CGI in it. Also, yeah: He looked like he was about to lead them all off to a gingerbread house and eat them while reciting limericks and giggling.

Being able to fade between the new and original artwork instantly is a nice touch.

I watched this last night and was impressed. It's quite tightly structured, with a lot of things presented that are used or referred to later, but would probably stand alone in many other films. It reminds me a little of There Will Be Blood, in the way the characters slot together like gears.

You're definitely past the best of it now, and it gets more awful at the end. If you don't care how it ends, I'd advise aborting and perhaps reading these spoilers. Here's the end as I remember it: I only played Thief 2 before this and it seemed to have quite an interesting world. I thought Thief 3 just dumbly telegraphed "HAY GUYS LOOK A FACTION SYSTEM HIPPIES AND TECHNOCRATS DONT LIKE EACH OTHER". Is it me or does almost everyone ignore "Deadly Shadows" and just call it Thief 3?

You're being overly harsh on yourself, for a start. I do quite a bit of writing for work. Not all of it is stuff I'm proud of or entirely happy with, but even with the enjoyable stuff it can take me an hour to really get into it. I'd advise just writing about something, anything, and committing an hour to doing it. Also, did you ever have to edit yourself extensively? IMO it's rare for anything to come out great as a first draft.
