  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I thought this of myself, but Dancer in the Dark and Avenue Q both punched through any such dislike by lacking the sunny, happy happy joy joy sentimentality of other shows.
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

I think the portrayal of romance in romantic comedies is just as weird and pathological as the commoness of guns in cinema.
  3. Nintendo Inflatable Donkey

Is it a kid with a receding hairline, or a 40 year old in a onesie?
  4. Happy Birthday Rodi!

    Happy Birthday, Rodi
  5. The sad sad tale of Tim Langdell

If you compare that to the current IGDA bio I linked above, he's no longer mentioning BAFTA. Also, guess who registered the-edge.com? The email address ends in @u2.org and the postal address is in Dublin
  6. The sad sad tale of Tim Langdell

I suspected homeopathy or astrology or something, but no.
  7. Nintendo Inflatable Donkey

Unicorns and whales! More extensive and elaborate Wii injuries than ever before.
  8. The sad sad tale of Tim Langdell

and the other important point in that open letter: Mobigame are nasty, bad people that are guilty as fucking fuck of being very mean to Dr. Langdell. ¬¬ For someone who has a legal case, he sure spends a lot of time talking about it outside of court.
  9. Grand Thumb Auto XXVI: A Turbulent Wreturn

At a meeting for the GameCity festival until late, I'm afraid.
  10. This is how Valve keeps being amazing

Really interesting, thanks Vimes. I'm noticing a growing rift between my favorite creators (in any medium), who tend to do a lot of this kind of research, and people who idolise their kind of creative work, but seem to think it's due to some form of special magic rather than this kind of hard work and inquisitiveness. At the architecture panel at Develop, Victor Antonov was talking about how they designed City 17. Locations (even rooms) had stories written for them covering what happened there two days, two weeks, and two years ago. Rather than then telling them right in the players face, this was simply background material that the environment artists would build into locations.
  11. Books, books, books...

If you enjoyed the film Moon, READ THIS FUCKING BOOK (Don't read reviews around the interweb, they're full of spoilers and this is one book really worth not spoiling). The plot centres on an anomaly on the moon that kills anyone who enters it. Like all the best SF it's about people not gadgets, in particular why some fairly screwed up people might be motivated to put themselves in some horrible situations. It uses some similar narrative techiques to Moon, but without the trope of an evil corporation. The title Rogue Moon is nonsense inflicted on the book by the publisher, and the authors preferred title was "The Death Machine". It's a pleasingly ambiguous title that could refer to a number of things in the book. Algis Budrys has a very compact writing style, unusual for fiction, but there's a great deal of interaction between the characters that has significance later, and their words are quite carefully chosen. It is, really, one of the best books I've ever read.
  12. The news media and "violent video games"

That could be the trend to talk about violent video games causing discussion of Columbine. Still, fascinating post Wrestle, thanks.
  13. WTFFF!!!!

Various cushions and soft furnishings in the background of photo #2 appear to be covered in animal skin.
  14. The sad sad tale of Tim Langdell

A pair of delightfully contradictory emails that got forwarded to me. Apparently, the petition now has enough IGDA members signed up to it to call an emergency meeting, but as many as possible would really hit the point home. This has put the board in a really awkward position, as developers are rallying with pitchforks to kick the fucker out, but the board can't really be seen to lend weight to that publicly. An emergency meeting follwed by the expulsion of Tim might be the only way to avoid an horrific implosion of support for the IGDA.
  15. WTFFF!!!!

I thought she was perhaps a 15 year old you.
  16. Have people seen Machinarium?

The developer's own site for it: http://www.machinarium.com
  17. Have people seen Machinarium?

This is actually the only game I've ever pre-ordered. Search is your friend. Toblix, in answer to the question you asked there, I though Samorost part 2 was a little short and not as good as the earlier one. Machinarium, though, was already pretty good last October when they sent some builds over for the Eurogamer expo.
  18. Life

Last week, I got invited to a party thrown by some people I only know a little, with instructions for all guests: "Dress as a panda or Elvis". All week I was thinking "How on earth am I going to make a decent panda outfit for Friday?", and on Friday morning inspiration struck. I already had a white sleeveless hoodie, it just needed a black top, duct tape ears on a white hair band, and some facepaint. I got my housemate to paint my face, which took a while as she did an excellent job. So I cadged a lift to their house, knocked on the door, and my next thought was "Hey why isn't Sophie dressed as a panda or Elvis?", and it was because the party was on Saturday. Oops. I thought about dying on the spot, but we all pissed ourselves laughing instead. They invited me in for a cup of tea, and I spent the evening helping them make Elvis costumes.

For once, I'm with elmuerte Indeed. At 15 months, low toe and scuba dive are beyond her for now though.

Wasps are evil fucking pieces of shit. Today, I found out my 14 month old sister understands high fives
  21. (IGN.com)

It'll be soon when I get around to editing and processing the 1.5gigs of video it made :/
  22. Where for art though, Blix? Some excellent nading tonight, James.
  23. I can vouch for this, finding last night that shouting "NEXT LEFT" isn't as effective at all.
  24. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Oh, yes. In a similar vein, been listening to quite a bit of randomly found minimal recently. Two tracks I like a lot: 8alQvBGMJPE PTWRoAJWZcs

Hating things can give you a really solid block to kick off from. That was the sense I meant it in. My brother and I were growing up to drift, until a bunch of really hateful and existentially troubling stuff came to a head. It's not that our jobs now are especially brilliant, but we're doing things a damn sight better than what we seemed destined for in our teens. Also, the people I've met in crap jobs are motivation. Asking someone how long they've worked in petrol stations for BP, and seeing their eyes glaze over as they say "nine years". Temping in a factory, meeting someone who'd been working there for 20 years on a production line putting scones in packaging, and asking "Have you never even wanted to be a supervisor or something?" "Oh God no! I wouldn't want the responsibility". Don't do this to yourselves!
