  1. Have people seen Machinarium?

I completed this today because I was off work ill. Wonderful game I like the it has a walkthrough, but with a simple little minigame just to make it something you can't immediately look through in a moment of weakness. There were a couple of moments where I needed it, as I probably wouldn't have worked out to , and those near the end were driving me insane. Everything else seemed manageable, though I might have got lucky with .
  2. So.. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Yeah, it's a nasty fight. I passed it by using the titans to beat the henchmen senseless. Don't entirely ignore them, but pay more attention to the titans. Good to get as many moves on the smaller guys as you can, but dodge jumps and cape stunning are your friends, and it's the titans pattern you should concentrate on. They'll help a lot in flattening the smaller enemies. Make sure you've got the hang of launching quick batarangs by tapping LT too - my housemate was struggling with all of the titan fights until near the end of the game, because he didn't realise you could launch batarangs without aiming like that. As long as you're facing the charging titan, it should prioritise them over other targets.
  3. Starter Shooters

I second this, the NOLF games are brilliant, have a female protagonist who isn't overly sexualised, don't take themselves seriously and are way more entertaining than most FPSes. The Vehicle sequences can get really annoying (in a "run them over and take a lot of damage", or "continually stop-start to sneakily take people down over much longer time periods" kind of way), but overall they're good FPS games. The sequel wasn't too difficult either; I completed it on normal difficulty in one sitting, whereas the first one took me much longer.
  4. Non-video games

I find the whole Christian repackaging of games slightly weird, especially when it's that elaborate. We have a copy of some crappy card game at work, which basically works on a collecting mechanic like Fluxx without the rule changes. Each set centres on a bible story, and when you complete one the rules dictate that you have to shout "The battle is the Lord's!". It's quite badly designed, but probably because it's solely designed to make families discuss the bible. I just found out my housemate has a copy of Ticket To Ride that's been sitting around unplayed for years (!)
  5. OK. Who wrote to UK:R about Marek?

Yes. Bronstring Marek Bronstring is indeed their head of content.
  6. Non-video games

I tried out Dominion a couple of weeks ago, I really like that you're basically building an economy into your deck.
  7. GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony

Oh, cock Half glad I didn't get around to it.
  8. So.. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Yeah, you can also save your progress at any non-boss fight point by moving to a new location.
  9. GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony

WOO Oops, missed this, sorry. I still have the HDD knocking around. The ballsed-up, non-standard SATA implementation on my motherboard means that I can't initialise the drive until I find someone with a SATA PC who's willing to let me open it up and monkey with stuff for an afternoon. :( What I've heard from people I know who've done it is that they also ended up having to hex edit the boot sector or something to get it to actually work :( It's on my to do list under "Things I'm dreading".
  10. Grand Thumb Auto XXXIV: It's sometimes too early.

Phones are one of the worst designed, most impenetrable objects in modern life. It was both clever and a bit cute for Rockstar to try using one as a menu, but it's a usability nightmare.

Interpret it how you like. According to past avatars, I also have a robot fetish, date chimps in hats, and become aroused by mazes. Age difference and assorted perplexity.
  13. Google Wave

That's what everyone says about everything new.
  14. Grand Thumb Auto XXXIV: It's sometimes too early.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just way down the feature list and they had to ship before they could get everything in. I really hope that after the next DLC, they put in a mode with all of the vehicles together + GTA races. The baton has been passed on, judging by what I did to Patters last week... :0

Have fun, I'm in Liverpool with no internet and no 360. Dammit, I was looking forward to having a dickish behaviour competition with James
  17. Google Wave

I'm in it now, but waiting for it to give me invites. It seems to work pretty well like most of google's web interfaces, and I really like the idea of something less kludgey than email and forums. Nonetheless, pretty lonely in there right now, I'm not in a very big circle of users, so lucky to get more than a handful of messages appear per day.

In the same way as smoking a pipe when you're under 40, of course

  20. Movie/TV recommendations

Ugh, worse than I thought I remember the trailer showing a *lot* people meeting grisly ends, wondering just how many characters it would get through, and thinking that if schlocky bits were the best ones they could put in the trailer it was probably going to be even worse than the first AvP :/

    That was an excellent thread.

No, it would really annoy me in spot where, say, you had to climb up a pipe and hope the SWATs you just ran past didn't shoot you dead while you were doing it. I was hoping to go for the test of faith achievement, but by the last level was thinking "FUCK IT", picked up one of the weird tiny machine guns they carry and started massacring them all. It is one of the most exasperating games I've ever played. They could have used police/gunfire to massive dramatic effect if it was a bit more sparing, but instead I thought it was like going to the theatre and having an actor in the next seat scream the word "DRAMA! DRAMA! DRAMA!" into your ear every few minutes. I got the pure map pack and all was forgiven. Not just aesthetically beautiful, but feels more skill based, so if it goes wrong I know it's my fault rather than the game just taking a chunk out of my ass. I woke up this morning actually craving more time with those maps
  23. Idle thumbs London meet!

I still have no idea what else is going on wrt thumbs meet that night, and I'm likely to be doing something with publishers meeting indie developers from 18:00 - 20:00. The indie event I linked above is something I've been planning with Eurogamer for a while though. As I said, any thumbs are welcome to come down, but there's only so much space there so PM me if you'd like to.

My bank seems to handle that kind of stuff quite well with phone and internet banking; I get a text message within minutes if any payments are made overseas, and they have some verification procedures for certain stuff that involve both but aren't a ball ache. Not sure how well they handle fraud after the fact though. Sucks balls Patters, I seem to know a lot of people who've had cards cloned or accounts accessed this year. Hope yours is sorted quickly.
