  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I thought Kick Ass was fluffy and entertaining, but nothing had developed by the end of the film. The guy who runs my local games shop summed it up well: "Mark Millar doesn't do character development, he does extreme moments", and that's pretty much what the film consisted of.
  2. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

That little girl is danger personified. Also one of the most charming kids I've ever met.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah, really good, and I've never been much of a Doctor Who fan. Though what was it with Amy Pond's giant rhetorical fists of ham at the ending tonight? I felt like I was going to have an aneurysm if she repeated the phrase "crying children" any more times as she over explained the space whale some more.

I suspect this might be a standard thing writers say to distance themselves from cultural fallout as they roll a wheelbarrow full of money away.
  5. So long Mythic?

It is really sad for the subscribers and Mythic. Even if the collection services let them get refunds out, they're going to be getting harassed and billed for bank charges for a long time, and a lot of people will likely cancel. This headline is class though, especially given how much Games Workshop gouge, and how culty their shops can be:
  6. Flotilla

Hehee I lost a leg in this the other day

AAAAGH! Scrobbs, you are truly on an evil and mischievous streak this week I got a mountain bike yesterday. It's not an amazing one, but it is a good one, and it gobbled up ten miles of hills in less than an hour. In the decade since I last rode regularly, the technology has come on amazingly. I think this might be enough to satisfy my craving to hurtle and take my mind off snowboarding for the summer
  9. Post your face!

That it did. I think I have such vivid memories of that time because I spent it with religious lunatics trying to insert their metaphorical penises between the hemispheres of my brain, daily. I can see how it would be a pretty mundane and unmemorable time of life for a lot of people though. That was KING STRAW. It was 33 feet long and had a bucket of rum and coke at the bottom. Anyone attempting to drink from it had to wear the crown. It was a pretty mental party, I wish there were more like it. The guy throwing it stumped up a 200 quid prize to get four fighters from a local boxing club to come and have full contact matches in the living room too. There was an entire pig being roast on a spit on the balcony. Hell, I wish I could afford to throw parties like that.
  10. The threat of Big Dog

I want to see 100 of them crossing a frozen river
  11. Post your face!

(I'm the one on the left in the stripey shirt. Probably should have mentioned that.)
  12. Post your face!

Washed out by a flash. It's one of the only recent shots I like though:
  13. Interesting stuff that might get you laid.

Ouch I used to hate that when working in a basement gallery. I managed one winter of it; can't imagine what it's like year in, year out for over a decade.
  14. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

Had definitely outstayed their welcome by the Episode 2 review, especially as they seemed to be just throwing them in with no relation to the parts of the film they were showing. Other than that, mighty entertaining reviews
  15. At the time I was waiting for the first JEFF GOLDGAME ROWKET LAWNCHAIR LAWNCHAIR.
  16. Ah, excuse me. Yes. "The ROCKEEH LAUNCHUH LAUNCHUH trick".
  17. The rocket trick was cool, though strange that it only worked for some of us. I'm sorry for blowing a bunch of you up that one time, I didn't realise you were lining up for a scooter race or something. I'm completely unrepentant for all of the other times though. I won't be around again next week, so I'd feel rude starting a thread for it, but it should be called "The Rocket Rocket Launcher Trick". Oh, as well as that game pitch I mentioned that was a bit wrong, I heard another very wrong one too. It was from a project with children who had Asperger's Syndrome, and they had to come up with game concepts. One kid devised a game that was basically a battle between all the world's religions. There was a backstory too, beginning with Hitler being assassinated by Jews in the 1930's and the Jews then going on to oppress everyone. How do you even begin explaining how wrong that is to an asperger's kid?
  18. Flotilla

Highlight of last night: getting hold of one of the Penguin torpedo ships, as payment for an encounter with (I think) the xenoarchaeologists. Facepalm moment: Immediately reversing it into a piece of space junk in its second battle, destroying it instantly.
  19. Flotilla

These ones at the bottom? Or the large block shaped things penguins often have? Or are there even bigger ships I haven't met yet? Kind of itching to get home and try the longer game mode.
  20. Life

Sounds excellent! A little bird told me the developer of QWOP is moving to the UK soon, and I'm organising a conference centred on indie developers. Should I ask him to do a talk called "What is Game?"
  21. Flotilla

I love them Destroyers with missiles can reverse away from them, repeatedly going to focus fire once they're at a safe range. Exposing the underside of one makes no difference when you're up against just beam weapons. If you have one yourself and have managed to upgrade it a bit (health regen and fire rate especially, but upgraded engines are also really useful for zipping around and killing everything), you can send it straight in to either attack any destroyers, or if you can get it between two closely space enemy ships it will almost immediately murder them both Once you have an extra beam frigate, you can handle most of the planets surrounded by red. By battleship, do you mean the ones turned on their sides on the right side of this picture, or are they dreadnaughts? Whichever, they can destroy a hell of a lot... (Edit: oops, sorry for the sidescroller) The large missile ships run by penguins are not something I've managed to get hold of, but those green torpedoes can really fuck up anything that isn't moved carefully. Are there any ways to get more ships other than picking up the haunted ones? Also, hardcore mode apparently lifts the 7 month limit, meaning you can finish a lot of the storylines rather than just see the beginnings.
  22. Flotilla

This game is beautiful The camera doesn't give me much trouble, but then again I'm used to UnrealEd and also helicopters in GTA. As well as your crew, you can easily end up fighting your if you Stay well back out of range. Split your destroyers with flank maneuvers, one above the enemy, one below, and at least one of them will be able to hit each beam frigate on the underside with focus fire as they approach. Always focus fire if a ship is in a good position, as you sometimes get lucky hits even on top/front armour. Sometimes the AI will get confused and turn a ship so the underside faces each alternately. If you have a third ship, you can use it as bait. If that third ship is a beam frigate, you can send it in for kills ones focus fire from your missiles has depleted their health a bit. Having a health regen upgrade on beam frigates or the huge things with double beams also makes them great bait/close attack. This kind of strategy will let you beat 5 ships with 3 fairly easily, just watch the underside of the one you send upward.

Hehe I'm familiar with that kind of CBT, and it was a minor problem while googling for the other. I'm not sure I'd get on with that kind of thing live, but find they're an excellent soundtrack to any kind of transport.

Also, I went to watch bike racing again, our friend Tim won one race and came second in another. There was motorcross on too, which was interesting to photograph. I'm especially pleased with this photo: and this one: I went snowboarding a month ago and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. On the downside, I'm still healing from a torn intercostal and a sprained foot. On the upside, the injuries were absolutely worth it. It was amazing and beautiful and I need to do it again as soon as possible. 2000ft descent + whiteout + going in one ear was incredible. The piste was busy with people trying to get off the mountain, the weird diffused light turned them all into grey ghosts, visibility occasionally dropped to about 20 feet, and I could hear ski patrols dynamiting on the surrounding mountains. It's been a long time since I mountain biked much, and I'd forgotten how much I love throwing myself around the world. So I've been picking up boarding gear in the end of season sales and am eyeing up mountain bikes too now... I also booked my CBT for early next month, so in a few weeks will have a 125cc motorbike and be able to ride it with learner plates For years I've postponed this kind of stuff because there's always something objectively more important or more responsible to do with money. Fuck it though, I don't want to live cooped up on public transport and in offices all the time.

Sorry for having been a tease on this. I basically got an offer to own and run an established company, but it was made by someone who tends to exist surrounded by a vague miasma of ideas and proposals. After trying to pin it down, it stayed vague. If it does eventually pan out, it will take many months, but I really don't expect it to. Given the nature of the person offering, I'm slightly glad about that.
