"Magnets how the *?*! do they work???" is also pretty high quality. I love the idea of swamping a protest group as objectionable as Westboro with net memes to trivialise their cause

It has friendly fire, but not as extreme as it was in the mod. In the 2K4 version, a single shotgun blast could take down the rest of the team. Typically, newbies would go "OOH! Flamethrower!", take it, then panic later and spin around, setting everyone on fire and igniting any ammo satchels they were carrying. BOOM A part of the fun is just how wrong things can go. Also, it was pretty amazing to set the mod loose, watch teams of four perishing endlessly in FF incidents, then after about a week of gradual improvement automatically make formations (diamond tends to work well), move efficiently and cover sectors.

Yes, on that point of the quick wrap-up Not entirely displeasing, but slightly counter to the expectation set early in the film. Also, None of these things were big enough niggles to make me feel disappointed.

These words make me ambivalent. I've started using "sperglord" under the influence of some Goon friends, and feel torn over it. Likewise, I don't use the term "spaz", but "spazclick" expresses accidentally clicking on something perfectly. "Gay" as a pejorative was also something I once struggled not to use, though not recently. In the case of sperg derivatives, I don't think it's been helped by socially awkward people self-diagnosing with aspergers syndrome as an excuse to be unempathic and socially inept.

@Wrestle oh, bum -- I've been surprised at how many people I've heard say they found it difficult to connect with or care about any of the characters of Inception. I quite liked them all...
  6. Books, books, books...

A friend bought my that for my birthday a few years back. Really good book
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

I saw Inception the other night and was very impressed  I also saw a short film (half an hour) called 12:01 yesterday. In 1993 they remade it as a full length TV movie, and it was shit. The half hour version that came first is really good though.
  8. Alien swarm

Black Cat forumers want a youtube video
  9. Emergent Gameplay

I think you've nailed it
  10. Alien swarm

Honestly, not sure. The rest of BCG haven't played it, and we're pretty sure this one will be all new content rather than a remake. The last one had quite a lot of content from the main developers, all told, and they work to very high production values.
  11. Alien swarm

The term "mini-game" does it an extreme disservice
  12. Life

We need a name that forms an appropriate acronym now
  13. Life

    I can vouch for that
  14. Idle Thumbs panel at PAX Prime

Just spat all over my screen
  15. Alien swarm

Alien Storm? Mark Rein once signed up to do a drive by congratulations post at Black Cat, and made exactly this mix up If you mean Alien Swarm, the Unreal mod, then this is the same thing, same core team. They just got hired by Valve and had to work on this around L4D and Portal.
  16. Life

I am in favour of this plan I have a theory that repressed people will go absolutely nuts in bed and become the best lovers
  17. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I cannot believe I didn't post this yet. What an oversight. via n0wak on Twitter. tVljiwwqwfc First comment a friend made on showing her: "How did they video inside your mind?" "I want " was one of the first things I said on trying out snowboarding
  18. Alien swarm

I was out with friends this evening when they announced it Well chuffed to finally see this published, especially for the four three main guys who worked on it from the very first version and were hired by Valve. The rest of us only did incidental bits (i.e. I designed a level for it), so we got a share of the Make Something Unreal loot but weren't hired. Those four three guys have had years of (some but not all) AS fans bitching at them, and it's been hard not to 1) let slip Dalai's real name and that it's in the credits for both L4D games, and 2) cave and show any of you the trailer early for the past few weeks.

  20. Eurogamer Tim Schafer interview

Yeah, though fairly typical. It's difficult to be a part time manager and part time creative (and promoting your best creatives to management is often a mistake). In Double Fine's case, I think that's been especially so with the lawsuit occupying all their directors.
  21. Who do you write like

PiratePoo, that's fantastic What got the "A Douchebag" result? My boss is slightly tormented at being told he writes like Dan Brown. Must be the gratuitous descriptions of women's bodies he keeps putting in consultancy reports. I tried various forums and blog posts, and got David Foster Wallace for all of them. Most bearable

No, that would Michael Bay. If you can't cope with uncertainty, tension, or interpretability, then Stalker is a very bad film for you. I liked it. Stalker is more about the characters, and how they behave under pressure, than it is about The Zone. Having them find bodies, skulls or special effects littering the area would add nothing to that, it's about how they react to the threatening lore surrounding the place. It's been under a military blockade for so long, and trips into the zone are so isolated and unobserved, that the surrounding environment is a perfect one for gossip and exaggeration to spread. Just like the characters, we never find out the truth. Even in the final scene, .
  23. An unfortunate car crash of cultural differences, geography and vocabulary. Probably only funny to British people: Young Boys Wankdorf erection relief These are all coming from twitter. Honest. I don't google for this kind of stuff.

This was doing the rounds on Twitter last night: All of Tarkovsky's films are (in a legit way) online for free. For a start, Stalker and Solaris were by him

I don't know. On several counts. We don't hate each other and never really fought; if anything there's a distance between us and we both wish it wasn't there. Me: Highly sexed atheist. She: Religiously chaste. It was obvious we were attracted to each other, but anticipating the issue meant we spent two years getting to know each other casually before I made a move. By that time, we cared about each other quite a lot already. The religion/lack of it isn't an issue for either of us, but I think not having sex before marriage is a dumb way to have a relationship. I'm somewhat prejudiced by my past; her religion isn't as extreme as the JWs were with it (i.e. telling teenagers "If you have sex before marriage GOD WILL KILL YOU", which is an amazing recipe for the creation of fetishes*, alcoholics and naive couples). Basically though, neither of us really believes the other's outlook on sexuality is healthy. It was a pretty fundamental sticking point, no matter how fond of each other we were, and the fact that things were going a little further every time we were together was, understandably, freaking her out quite a bit. Even if she does have feelings for me still, I'm dubious about putting either of us back in that situation. * not that they're a bad thing, I just think this is very interesting cause and effect.
