  1. Valkyria Chronicles

The problem was that getting anywhere near close enough to shocktroopers to get a headshot equals death. I found a way to survive until my own tank rolled up, then mortared the bejesus out of them. Whatever was going on with the camera eventually stopped, and I'm through the tutorial. That was one mighty shit tutorial, throwing enemies at me that I couldn't actually kill until later. Game seems pretty good now I have all the troop types available
  2. Valkyria Chronicles

Yeah. With my extremely limited sample of missions, it seems to reward kamikaze style behavior rather than planning and use of cover. Except when it doesn't reward either of them. Edit: Fuck it. Rebooting the playstation, starting new game, nothing stops the camera jumping out from behind the characters and preventing me from doing anything. HUD disappears too. I'm going to spend no more than an hour trying to find out about and fix it, then this PoS is going on ebay stat.
  3. Valkyria Chronicles

Could someone help me please? I'm on the [edit: second] tank level and about to snap the disc. The one where it's trying to destroy the gate. Attempt one: Bullets ping ineffectually from shocktrooper. Shocktrooper flattens Alicia while she's behind cover, game over. Attempt two: Think about throwing grenade at shocktrooper. Pitiful range means I have to run out of cover to throw it, Alicia dead more or less as soon as it lands. Attempt three: Wonder if tower increases grenade range. Climb it, everyone flattens Alicia before I can even hit the button to climb back down. Game over. Attempt four: Think about using grenade on tank. Dash Alicia out behind it, throw grenade, take about 1/8 off the treads. Alicia dies in a flurry of bullets. Attempt five: Attempt to get all characters well clear of shocktrooper+tank and into cover. Shocktrooper flattens them at range. Attempt six: Skip first phase to see what will happen. My units shoot several people dead. For a few seconds, I'm doing better than I've done so far by doing nothing at all. Then, Mister Shocktrooper nearly flattens one of watchmen. On my turn, strange bug occurs: whenever I start to use a unit, it switches to a first person view, and I can't control them, bring menus up or anything. The only way out is to press the PS button, which puts it back into third person view behind the playstation menu, allowing them to be killed by enemy fire. Attempt seven: Retry mission. Same weird camera bug. Attempt eight: Quit game and restart. Realise I'm right back at the beginning of the game because there's no fucking autosave between missions. Start first level. Same fucking camera bug not allowing me to play :( I want to love this thing because it's so beautiful, but it's making me feel the same way as the PS3 version of Far Cry 2.

I got a Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc. Nothing incredibly expensive or fancy, but tough enough to throw around a bit off road If I lived somewhere flatter, or London, I'd probably get an old road bike and do it up.
  5. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

Level design gets a fair bit more difficult when the player can climb loads of the environment.

Very glad to hear the good bits of that Murdoc There's a 27bslash6 type letter in this. -- Things didn't work out with that religious girl. As a friend put it to me "It's like the best love story ever... except it has the wrong ending". I'm not so sure, because I think in certain ways she'd have been very, very bad for me. I don't believe in anything "spiritual", and can only take so much hokum and homeopathy before I distance myself from someone. Romantic feelings obliterate that, but what when they've changed and calmed down later? I feel ok. There was a month of other shit and chaos I won't talk about because it's past and just an agglomeration of trivial stuff. I just spent another weekend camping, fire building, cooking, training, etc. I'm glad I don't have to cycle to work today, because it feels like my body might fall to bits if I did. Cycling and training is getting me incredibly fit, and stronger too. I seem to be down to a 30 inch waist, which was my size a decade ago, but never since I'm also right back into the swing of bike maintenance, and discovered I still have a pretty decent load of tools from years back. It's done 1300 miles in 5 months; I've had to replace most of the chainset already but it's running flawlessly. Being able to look after something well is very satisfying.
  9. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

^ That. "Duke Nukem: Committed Misogynist" Thank you SiN, for making it sound interesting. Gearbox are good at silly and polished; maybe they will do something magnificent with it. I am dreading the spirit of it and its reception. The design will be interesting though.
  10. Eurogamer Expo '10

I'll be there for the whole thing working on the indie section. We'll also probably be doing another Show & Yell too.

That looks incredible. Also, the high castle in the first few shots is pleasingly similar the castle that loops behind the menus in the first ever Unreal, but curved and much better looking. It's pretty surreal to see things like this running in browsers and on mobile.
  15. Batman: Arkham City

She does look less disturbed, but she's also posing with a load of villains in one of the shots. If anything, I'd guess she and Batman have to grudgingly work together for part of the game, blah, yadda. Thank you for the belly laugh

I think you're about to get loved through the pants.
  18. Scott Pilgrim [graphic novel/motion picture]

Ideally I'd go with the books first too if you've started them, but the film is pretty good on a big screen. It's not like it's a whodunnit or something either, so it might be good to watch the film then get a more fleshed out version of the story from the books. Miffy, I wouldn't belabour this point if it weren't for the rest of what had been said about Scott Pilgrim: Fair enough
  19. Scott Pilgrim [graphic novel/motion picture]

One thing I really liked about the film: They seemed to vary the production on Sex Bob-omb to make them sound incredible in the living room and shitty on stage Having seen the film now and contemplated the books a little more, I'm able to articulate what I like about Scott Pilgrim, which is basically that it's a story of characters maturing in an inherently shallow world. They live amidst surreal game conventions: Information labels, , overblown martial arts and physics, and you can kill rivals with little to no repercussions. That surreality meant that none of the hipster/game stuff people seem to find so objectionable in the comics bugged me; I never for a second saw any of the characters as anything to aspire to, it was just entertainment, until the end. So: That's one pretty fucking healthy message to be wrapped up in something so overtly cool
  20. Reformat the Plant - a documentary on chiptunes

That makes a lot of sense. It's probably something that simple that really puts me off rather than just the culture around it. The clip they had in part 4 of Aonami is the only bit that really got me going so far.
  21. Life

Holy crap Murdoc, sorry to hear that. Are you not covered by their insurance, or does the contract fuck you?
  22. Reformat the Plant - a documentary on chiptunes

In theory I really want to know more about this. I get intensely annoyed at how earnest they all are though; also watching people dance to chiptunes in clubs. It's one thing to like something a lot, but the way they pump their fists and writhe reminds me of evangelical Jebus freaks. The things they're playing with were a humongous part of my childhood, and unlike most nostalgia trigger happiness in me, but they don't even compete with the music I'd go to see live or dance to. I like chiptunes but can't like the chiptune scene the way it presents itself to me; words like fervent and desperate come to mind when I try to describe it.
  23. Scott Pilgrim [graphic novel/motion picture]

(Carrying on from the discussion that derailed the game thread for a bit) Imagine these as a Venn diagram: Hipsters > Hipster Nerds < Nerds The massive inflation of a formerly niche comic into other media is squashing all of the fans together, over previously uncomfortable though not particularly hostile lines. Now they're all having to rub together very closely while working out their own fandom/anti-fandom. Hipsters and nerds both get to feel like their clique is being culturally invaded by things they despise, while the uber-scene kids already smack bang in the middle get to feel like their entire life is being sold out around them. Cue massive torrent of bile and argument.
  24. Scott Pilgrim [video game]

The series actually has quite a nicely done end. I think what most people here are saying is "I'm entitled to my opinion!". Others are also then saying "No you're not!". I suggest: Going outside
