  1. Minecraft

This just might be the most important indie game ever made. I only occaisonally dipped my toes in over the last few weeks until last night when I got past the point where the draw of bed overpowers the draw of game. Just stayed up all night playing, that's been a long time... I love that minecraft keeps changing. The torch update will work really well I reckon, just as long as all existing torches do NOT automatically get turned into lanterns. I like the idea of having to head back down through the cave systems you thought were yours to reclaim them. Portals to hell ooh yeah. And I read somewhere that RIDEABLE DRAGONS will be in minecraft.
  2. Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse

Bullshit. The ending was genius. The dialog wasn't repetitive. Every time you did something wrong Max or Sam said something new that got you thinking more in the right direction. The exhaustive permutations thing has always been an option in adventure games, but has only ever been mandatory if you play them wrong (IE never stop to think about things from the point of view of a weird rabbitty thing).
  3. BioShock Infinite

Edit: Oops sorry this is probably what the rest of you were talking about in this thread earlier, didn't get that.
  4. BioShock Infinite

Probably not worth it's own post, but definitely related to what the guys at irrational are doing, and some of the wider discussions here at thumbs, is this series of Kieron Gillen interviews on RPS I'm reading instead of doing work: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/tag/dark-futures/ Randy Smith, Harvey Smith (are these guys related??), Hock and Sock, Pagliarulo ... Good stuff.
  5. Sad video game music

Be careful what you ask for: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Symphony+No+3+Op+36+1976+Sorrowful+Songs+I+Lento+Sostenuto+Tranquillo+Ma+Cantabile/2SEuWq (this starts really quiet but give it a chance. And put on the next 2 songs from the album after.) In video game music I found some of the call of duty stuff to be very emotional in-game: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=call+of+duty+2+soundtrack&aq=f I didn't get the same reaction from the modern warfare soundtrack and I haven't played modern warfare 2 at all, but I assume it's not the same sort of vibe as the first two games, which for me was still some of the best audio ever in games.
  6. Mafia II

Don't forget the music. There's some very rare Django in there. Once you get to the old school racecars you really get a better grip of the driving in Mafia1 and it seems to click. The shooting bits, especially later in the game, work way better than they did in GTA3. Mafia2 PC all the way.
  7. Limbo

I think all the summer of arcade releases have a year-long exclusivity deal. If you'll eventually get a 360 it might as well be now. Limbo is rad on a projector in a dark room.
  8. Monkey Island 2: SE

This game is so fucking good. The developer commentaries are forcing me to stay up all night and be late for work just to hear the next one.

A whitakker tune. What a ridiculously unforgiving game this was. I can't find a copy of the music without the sound effects.
  10. aargh public messages, right....

  11. Nintendo 3DS

    I reckon it is; http://www.gamespot.com/news/6087254.html http://web.archive.org/web/20051217100630/www.sharp3d.com/technology/howsharp3dworks/
  12. Infinity Ward - MW2 news

Wow. Activision really Really suck. It's like Warner brothers firing James Cameron for insubordination or something. What a shitty state of affairs for the games industry where things like this can happen.
  13. Heavy Rain

Ok, well, I'm not one for long speeches, but it seemed to me that the basic, now done to absolute death, QTE idea of dragon's lair is the basic gameplay in this. A branching story is nothing new, and the 'what am I thinking?' thoughts bubble mechanic is an ancient adventure game trope. I didn't even finish the demo mind, so maybe he gets more original ideas in there. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the quick time fight in the girl's apartment and will most likely get back to the demo, but I just don't see why Heavy Rain is a landmark title.
  14. Gaming virginity loss.

Holy shit, Dark Castle. The music. Crapola that was fun. Pirate on the QL This was the first game I owned. I don't think looking starry eyed at your friend's C64 and not getting a go cause everyone at his birthday was crowded around it, until the next weekend when he only let you have a quick go, counts.
  15. Heavy Rain

From the demo, heavy rain seems to pretty much be Dragon's Lair. Am I missing something?
  16. Dead Space

Dead space really rewards you for playing it on hard mode. It switches genres and goes from shooter to survival horror. I recall Tycho from PA said as much at the time. I didn't know it was based on SS3 work, that makes sense in hindsight, but I'm glad they didn't release it as such. I really enjoyed dead space.
  17. *Breathy Voice* Bayonetta *Breathy Voice*

best ass in video games. period.
  18. When is Steve Purcell gonna sign some more of those goddamn sweet Tales of Monkey Island poster prints??? Yeah, this is something that really matters. I bought one already, so what's the story, already? Yeah.
  19. Epic Disney on GameInformer

    With sexy results.
  20. The system works! I was pissed as a fart my earlier post there, sorry to be presumptuous. Murray!
  21. Fuck, brkl, that's cool. I will now illegally download this.
  22. The Bat Man

I just got similar cravings for some reason, and I've opted for 'The Killing Joke' and 'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?', just cause I know I already like the writers.
  23. The Dig is fun, it was more or less the only Lucas adventure I never got around to back in the day, so I had to give it a go. Atmospheric, reminds me of Beneath a Steel Sky, and I didn't know Orson Scott Card wrote the dialogue. (btw what the hell happened to the thumbs smilies?)
  24. Trine

It was 30 dollars on gamesplanet last week when I bought it after hearing the podcast, saving 10 euro instead of buying from steam. They changed it to 24 pounds though since, so I guess that's no use to you. Damn steam euro bollox...
