GTA San andreas. How did you do the missions?

Wanna get into the games industry? Have a heart attack.

yeah. and just as corrupt. pity that. -
I found the Shadow War series had a good 'theory of magic' thing going on. You might remember the name Elora Danaan from the hammy 'Willow' movie. Well, when she grows up she meets lots of scary magicians and saves the world... The magic system had this ring to it that appealed to me. Had stuff to do with music and that usually works for me.

right! procedural everything! death to artists! wooooooot! this is the real point. it's not about how it looks, it's about how it _works_. So, to those who were at GDC this year, did Wright's lecture seem to actually make a difference? I mean, were there lots of people afterwards saying 'yeah we'll give this procedural thing a go now.' or 'we'll get right on it, Mr. Wright.' or some such? I sure hope so.

i think you can get a real time demo .exe from their website. at least I think it was speedtree. You need a monster PC though.

he said no. but he cryptically said they might have something like that out soon. cool. now that I've drained all the mystery out of the game for myself, I've something else to wonder about.

righto!

here, I've an idea! first, click on this ▼ http://www.custompatches.net/ Let's get these guys to make some for us. 50 patches minimum order. first 50 responses here get one. Who's with me? hang on. this might be illegal.

sort of missing the point. Can programmers be artists, animators, writers or designers? Doing something yourself (eg. creating a texture) and writing software to do it are similar things. You have to think about exactly how you're doing it when you write the program, and include your own ideas on exactly how it's going to be done, just like you do when you're making it by 'hand'.

"if anyone can do it it's Wright" a concesus (SP?), it appears. I played simlife and simearth and couldn't believe it (didn't get to simant yet, supposed to be the best one). The complexity that he gets away with isn't there in other designers' work. He somehow manages to sell these longshot ideas while being able to prove their mathematical rigourousness in stability, as if they were theorems, but proving that they won't crash. It's consistency of design more than anything else, I reckon. What do I know, I'm on opium tonight.

I'll be looking forward to the sort of scaling that Katamari Damacy had, sort of seamless. Wright does indeed know a lot about simulation, and the supposedly procedural nature of the content in the game should combine with this to allow for an environment where changes on the cellular level have a direct, but not neccessarily predictable, effect on the macro level.

I smell 90's graphic adventure remakes.

seems like all skill and timing to me. got ~5200 after a few minutes. ill be getting back to this.

I think Aonoma(SP?)'s work in Majora's mask was great. He expanded the format to include an optional trip into other character's stories. The villager's quests and problems were interesting in themselves. The masks you were rewarded with helped in the game alright, but I reckon that's ancilliary to what he was trying to do. Deciding whether you were willing to do copiously more time travelling than you needed to do, in order to sort out various people's problems, was a big decision in playing the game. I did a few of them, but realised there was a lot more depth involved when I read a walkthrough later out of curiosity.

call me a fanboy, but Will Wright is god. Ill get the site up soon.

every post in this forum has something to do with this game. Every hope expressed, every thought cruelly quashed, every subject squeamishly circled, has direct relevance to this, the pinnacle of human achievement. Spore.

This is a great site. thanks. http://www.sirlin.net/Features/feature_PlayToWinPart3.htm This article's predecessors (part 1 and two) advocate that playing a game with the sole purpose of winning is the way to get better at that game. In this, part 3, he goes back on this and shows that playing for fun can help find out more about the game. In The Secret of Monkey Island, the insult swordfighting is a great example of a game in which, by design, you learn more and become a better player by playing to lose. I can't think of any other games specifically designed like this. It struck me as odd at the time, when I was 14 or so, but now I think about it, I can't remember any other games designed like this. It's not exactly trial and error, although you could think about it from a point of view where it looks like trial and error.

The Gorillaz website has gone through any number of iterations, and there's shitloads of stuff hidden in various nooks and crannies, so much so that it now appears to be an actual functioning adventure game - with a working inventory system - as well as a navigation tool. Can anyone find the key for the door in the hell hole at the bottom of the bunker?
