  1. If someone here is in the industry, who knows someone who knows someone, can I also make a few requests?

    No.

THE INDUSTRY does not take requests. We give you what you like and you like that we give it to you. In the event that you don't like what we give you, you can reconsider what we've given you until you like it. That's the way we like it.

    </sarcasm>

For the record, mr. anti, I work on largely nonviolent games (largely nonviolent...CivCity and Warlords both got an E10+ for violence). Of course in my spare time, there's nothing I enjoy more than a good ol' M-rated game. There's nothing wrong with that.

  2. I think an European developer would not have ended up with such a cliched portrayal of Native American culture.

    How is it cliche?

Cliche is Turok running around with a tomahawk. Tommy is hardly a cliche character.

  3. I'm curious: do you (anyone) think it helps to be American rather than European, when it comes to "getting" the Native American/Red Indian/whatever storyline properly?

Other than white man's guilt? Not really.

  4. Of course they created Steam out of self-interest. But if you look at their history of how they have used it in conjunction with other developers, it's clear that they are interested in using it to help other independent developers as well as themselves.

Sure, but let's not forget the other side of that -- small developers were the only ones willing to give steam a try, so they had no choice but to seek out small developers.

When Steam was announced one of the first games that was going to use it was Relic's Impossible Creatures. Then they were bought by THQ. There went that deal.

  5. You can do that with any game. Just remember to bring the CD/DVD. And you wouldn't have to wait hours for those games to download or update, either.

But that's the point. I don't *have* to bring the CD or DVD. I just download the program, log-in and I'm good to go.

And I don't get your complaint about waiting hours to play games...it seems to me that I'm able to play them pretty quickly after installing the program.

That's not an issue for me anyway, as I rarely have to play games the instant I install them, but I've never had a problem there.

Also, since I have always-on internet connections at work and home, I don't really care about having to have an internet connection to play those games.

  6. Steam's great. I've had no problems with it whatsoever.

I don't leave it running in my system tray unless it's specifically downloading something though...even if it's not a system hog anymore, i'd rather not chance it.

But otherwise it's great. I pick a game, download it and play it what's not to love?

  7. Well, yeah, but it's based on an old, old 3DR project and the premise is pretty much identical.

Not really. The only thing the two games have in common is a title, a native american protagonist, and the use of portals. Everything else was freshly created.

The actor, Michael Greyeyes, seems to also be from Canada, so that might add to his "quirky" delivery.

The actor is native american, so the accent you hear is authentic. Incidentally, so is the actor playing Jenny (the actor playing Grandfather is not).

  8. Well it's only 3DR publishing it as far as I'm aware; the development itself is all Human Head.

Correct...sort of. 2K is the publisher, 3DR is producing it, HH is developing it.

How does the game run? My machine isn't fantastic with its Nvidia 6600gt, AMD 2800+ and 1GB of RAM, and has trouble with stuff as far back as Battlefield 2. I don't think I'll bother if I'll have to run it with shit settings to be smooth.

It should run fine on that setup. That's better than my desktop here at work, and I can run it in 1600x1200.

  9. There's a friend of my family in Colorado that designed and built his house and it has no corners. Straight walls yes, but no 90 degree corners. They're all rounded. And it is awesome.

It sounds like something out of a 60s sci-fi flick.

    In otherwords, awesome.

  10. I handled PR for Prey until just a couple of months ago, so I can't possibly be any more biased than I am.

But I still think the game rocks.

If you haven't yet, try multiplayer. If you like DM (and don't suffer from motion sickness), you'll have a blast. If you don't...you can safely skip it. Me, I love DM, so I love Prey deathmatch.

  11. Okay I am. I want a DS lite because they're sexy. Or 'cute' as girls say. I'm probably supposed to say that?

    Can hardware be considered "cute"?

I guess the bubble-shaped iMac was, and the VW Bug, but most sleek, attractive hardware is definitely more sexy than cute.

  12. It actually makes the thing more ergonomic, really.

I know! It makes no sense, but it's a lot more comfortable. Even for freaky big hands like mine.

I used to have to use ugly grips to play GBA games (both with the original model and the SP), but with the DS Lite i'm just fine.

  13. Anybody else get one yet?

I picked one up over the weekend, and I gotta say, it's an improvement in every conceivable way over the original. It's not ugly, it's more comfortable (even for freaky big hands like mine), the stylus is bigger, the screen(s) completely blow away the original's, and really, it's not ugly.

The only complaint I have is that GBA carts stick out of the unit...they're not flush like they were in the original. That basically means I won't be leaving a GBA game in there all the time like I did before. But it's totally worth the tradeoff.

I also picked up Mario Kart, which despite my general dislike of the entire series, I'm really enjoying. Much more than New SMB, which surprisingly, I *don't* really care for (it just bores me for some reason).

  14. They don't? Who does, Telltale? I assumed that they maintained the original game, if not the franchise.

The original game is probably tied up in limbo, with the game content owned by LucasArts (they certainly own the engine and technology) and the franchise rights signed to Telltale. So they might be able to do a new game (if they have more than just PC rights, which they may not), but they coudln't port the old one.

    This stuff is complicated.

  15. Pfft. Street Fighter sucks with that (amongst others). I'd rather have the SNES d-pad or Genesis 6-button or, hell, the Saturn pad. Where's the Saturn pad in all of this?

    What are you, nuts?

The saturn pad, okay, but that SNES d-pad is ass compared to the PlayStation standard.

To each their own, I 'spose.

  16. Personally, I just don't think the market's ready for hd media anyway. Won't stop them from trying to force the issue though, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll take hold anywhere outside of the more anal-retentive techie crowd. SACD or dvd-audio anyone?

I don't think this is quite the same as either of those formats. Granted, I don't think 99% of people will be able to immediately tell the difference between regular and HD DVDs, but DVD players are so outrageously cheap right now that people getting a new system WILL buy one because they need to feel like they're getting something that's top of the line for their new surround sound system and HDTV. People have been buying upscaling DVD players, which these *are* in addition to being next-gen DVD players, so those people will just buy these.

Also, as an owner of an HDTV, I will say that I look forward to this stupid thing being resolved. Warner Bros. is going to be releasing an Ultimate Superman box set in both regular, Blu-Ray and HDDVD formats, and I'm not going to waste my time with the old version...I want all those movies in HD format. I just need to know which one to go with.

Probably blu-ray because I'm going to get a PS3 anyway...but I'm not planning on getting one this year, that's for sure.

  17. The seriousess of the movie was lost with V* monolog of V in the beginning of the movie.

That's in the comic, but it just didn't work on screen. When I saw that, I started to worry that it just wouldn't translate to film without looking silly.

I will say that I was disappointed that they cut out my favorite scene in the book (the one where he gives the speech to the statue, and does both voices). But at least they left the Valarie section essentially untouched.

  18. - Street Fighting Man over the ending credits. Love the song, but it just seemed inappropriate

That didn't bother me at all. Doesn't V quote the Stones repeatedly in the comic? I think he quotes from Sympathy for the Devil, but Street Fighting Man worked fine as an ending credits song. I mean it's better than having some pop band do an original song (Just imagine the theme music from Smallville *shudder*).

  19. but when people hear gamer, it's connotated to "ugh, a gamer. what is it with you people? why do you have to shoot kids in the face?" or something.

    I don't hear that.

Obviously I'm not going to hear that at work, but none of my friends are gamers, so I spend most of my non-working, non-gaming time with non-gamers, and I never hear anything like that.

If someone were to ask most people that, they'd say, "so what, you play video games or something?" No negative context, no context whatsoever.

When you see hysterical soft news pieces about gaming, they never use the word gamer, they use words like "children" and "violence".

Also keep in mind that in some places, "gaming" means something entirely different. I was on a flight back to NY from Vegas once and told the person next to me that I worked in the gaming industry...she assumed I meant gambling.
