  1. I won't even play this game (because it's crap) but I think the "pay what you want" is a great innitiative.

As someone else pointed out, there's diminishing returns with that. The more people use the "pay what you want" model the less effective it becomes.

Besides, it's only effective if you have enough a large enough fan base. World of Goo has been riding on a year worth of positive word of mouth, so it can work for them. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have a massive following, so it works for them. Imagine trying to sell a new game, from a new, unestablished company? I guarantee you that's an easy way to lose money.

That said, I did give WoG $5 this time around. I bought the game before at full price, for PC, but felt like supporting them again and grabbed the OSX version.

  2. Actually I was born in Canada, but I left when I was little...

It's just when I hear people saying "games are luxury items", I hear "I'm willing to pay 200$ for a game"....

Well, when you consider the price of the console and everything needed to play a game that's not exactly wrong. I saw Call of Duty 4 (4, not even the new one) for sale today at 60 euros. 60 EUROS. This might be within all of our first world reach, but in the grand scheme of things... it's pretty damn luxurious.

    #firstworldproblems

  3. As others have said, 'Luxury' has multiple meanings, depending on context. If you don't believe me, check out Wiktionary:

    luxury (plural luxuries)

    1. very wealthy and comfortable surroundings.

    2. something desirable but expensive.

    3. something very pleasant but not really needed in life.

#1 & #2 are what Tanukitsune is referring to; #3 is the definition that n0wak and others were using.

Yes, thank you. Although in the case of Activision, I do believe #2 applies to what I said.

  4. "You want Peggle? Go fuck yourself-IGN.com"

Yeah, I just saw this and instantly thought of this thread. It's so fucking meta. It's like the usual IGN shlock self-parodied into a new shlock soup of shlock.

  5. Saying that "the price doesn't match the content" is fine, but using it as an excuse to download the game for free is the most retarded fucking thing. I'm sorry, but your friend is an idiot. If he thinks that it's overpriced, he shouldn't fucking buy it. Is that so complicated? And if he's complaining about the perceived value of something, which he doesn't agree with, and then downloads and plays that game then he's fucking proving the publisher right. There is value in the product. The publisher is pricing it correctly.

Gaming is a luxury product. If you think otherwise, and think of it as a mere commodity, then you are deluded.

  6. This is a limitation of the game basically being a stand-alone Flash, and when you right click you get the standard Flash menu instead of, say, cancelling the inventory cursor. It's lame, but there's nothing they could've done about it, other than choosing to do it on some other platform.

There are ways to get around that using third-party wrapping extensions, or at least there used to be last I checked, but that's going off topic. :getmecoat

  7. Any ideas for a good gateway-shooter?

Metroid Prime. Because it's not really a first person shooter, but it is in first person and there is shooting. I don't know how well the original translates to the Wii controls in the recent Trilogy release, but you can probably find the O.G. Gamecube release for cheap. Though be warned that certain boss fights can get hard.

Otherwise, I would suggest Halo. The controls are good and intuitive and you can play it co-op, which really helps minimize the frustration to a new-comer. I hated the original Halo, but I had fun with it in co-op with my sister who's not into shooters. If she started getting shot I'd help, if she'd die I'd take cover and let her respawn, and I was there to tell her where to go next. People that don't play first-person games often can have a hard time getting their bearings straight.

So, really, if he wants to get her into the game just play a co-op shooter. Any would do but Halo does it best.

  8. The peeing one at least makes a little sense for Calvin's character, but PRAYING? This kid always seemed agnostic at the least...baffling...

I don't think much makes sense for the kind of people that use a Calvin praying image. Irony is outside of their realm of perception.

  9. If you can overlook the "hey, here's a cool record I found. Let's add some beats and random samples on top of it and call it new" aspect of Mr. Scruff, or the likes of DJ Shadow, then there are some really good tunes to listen to

  10. Gamespot shit

I remember when one of the GTAs came out, maybe San Andreas (or maybe it was a Halo?), I walked into a EB and asked for it and the clerk just sneered at me as if I had the gall to ask to buy a Video game in a Video game store. No, I did not preorder. Then he gave me attitude and basically said "good luck finding a copy" while a line formed. It was obviously a big release, lots of people were buying. But god forbid they'd have copies to sell.

I went to a Futureshop nearby (think BestBuy, but Canadian and with commissioned sales people :fart:) and there were no lines, but hey had a whole shit-ton of copies on their shelves. I grabbed one and left. I was tempted to go back and shove that game down that guy's throat, but I opted to, instead, never visit that fucking EB again.

Thankfully, while I lived in downtown Toronto we had a bunch of really cool independent game shops which all provided such a better experience overall. I remember walking into one of them and without saying a word the clerk, who knows me and my game tastes, grabbed a game and presented it and asked "right?"

Yup. That's exactly what I wanted. Bought it and left. No preorder. No negotiating. No protection plan. No shitty magazine upsells. I wish there were more independent retailers out there, but Video game retail is a hard business and there's little profit in game sales. I blame the publishers, but mostly I blame GameSpot/EB.

  12. So, Friday is the definite meet day? Ossk and nowak when are you leaving ? I'm planning to take the Friday off and get a train around 9AM.

That's probably my plan too. I want to be in London close to opening, at least. Though the hotel I have booked doesn't have check-in until 2:30 which is a little annoying, but at least it's not too far from the site.

Tell me which train you're going on though. That's the only thing I haven't booked yet.

  13. Is that Scavenge mode?

Shouldn't that be 30th and 31st? Or do they mean Leeds and London, respectively?

I dunno, maybe there's another event? And maybe another mode?

Anyway, it was jolly good fun today. That massacre at the start of the first game was so perfectly executed (got an achievement out of it too!) that I can forget the loss in the second game :(

  14. Perhaps they could combine the two podcasts and call it Thumb Up Yours?

While I did enjoy listening to some of the 1up people, I tend to prefer it when then podcasts I listen to are shorter than Dr. Zhivago.

  15. Good news everybody*.

I got CrossOver for Mac and now have L4D running!! I'm kind of amazed by it. From CrossOver purchase to L4D playing took me less than an hour (including all downloads), and best of all the game runs better on the fucking MacBook than it ever did on my PC back home. Had to tweak some visual settings down a bit to get the frame rate more consistent, but damn. It's nice. Just played Crash Course. See you tomorrow.

*Except for those that loathe me.

PS. Just saw this on the L4D2 site

Next public showing will be at the London Game Show where Valve will be showing the as-of-yet unannounced new game mode. We really should announce that soon… We can give you one hint, the game is 4 v 4. So get your team together and join us in London on October 29th or 30th.

I think I know where we should have our Idle Thumbs meetup now.
