  2. Super Paper Mario

Well, I should hope so as that mechanic is everything that Crush is designed around. SPM has a little more going for it. Plus, it's Mario so it can't get too complicated... unlike Crush. From what I've read, there are some puzzles that might take half an hour to an hour to solve. Sounds frustrating yet totally awesome. And it sucks that the Wii is getting something this awesome while I still don't have one.
  3. Wii not taking games Seriously

This might be true to a certain degree, but I think the Nintendo stance of "have fun, bring people together" is far less cynical than the stance that some other people in the industry have. Kind of like Capcom's Inafune http://kotaku.com/gaming/keiji-inafune/gdc07-capcoms-inafune-slams-clover-producer-242796.php

As Nachimir said, art assets do not necessarily make art. I mean, if you approach it from an artist's point of view then the various consoles and engines are nothing but tools at their disposal. No tool is better than any other, just better at a specific job. So it depends on what it is that you want to achieve. If you think your high art gaming concept needs to push ten billion polygons a second, then obviously the Wii is not what you'd use. That doesn't mean that the Wii sucks ass. It just does a different job. It's akin to complaining that "painting sucks ass" because you can get a better representation of the real through photography. Which, obviously, isn't true.
  6. [GDC]Real nice news from Sony

I'm guessing you just watched a "gameplay" run through. Watch the whole demonstration: http://www.wonderlandblog.com/wonderland/2007/03/little_big_plan.html
  7. Braid

This game's been getting some buzz in indie circles. So much so that I have no idea what to think of it. I've seen some people that played it go on saying that it's the greatest game ever made ever for all time and then others saying... no. http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2007/02/braid_vaguely_demystified_blim.php
  8. Wii not taking games Seriously

Well, no shit. It's like buying a Kia and then ranting that it wasn't the racecar experience you were expecting. It was never meant to be a "next gen" experience but a new, more accessible experience. As you said, he seems to be blowing a lot of steam just to be contrarian. And I looked up Chris Hecker in Wikipedia... the entire entry has just been deleted. Google cache to the rescue. Sounds to me like he doesn't like to have fun. If so, then he shouldn't worry about the Wii and focus on getting his games from Manifesto Games.
  9. [GDC]Real nice news from Sony

But the question remains. Can you send giant pink floating penises to crash other peoples' parties? Cause if you can't, then it's nothing like Second Life. It looks pretty cool as a standalone chat thing, I guess. One that will no doubt be plastered with ads. I just don't know how well it'll integrate with games. One of the things I read/listened to is that you'll be able to invite your friends to your room and then launch into a multiplayer game together... which seems obtuse to me. As long as there are non-3D-chat options for some of the things they are doing (like joining/inviting friends into games -- an XBL standard feature) then I'd imagine it'd get annoying for people that actually want to play games. LittleBigPlanet looks awesome though. And you didn't mention the new Killzone footage!
  10. Jesus Christ's Do's and Dont's

Yeah, superbad is ancient. Up there in the realm of net.art sites like Potatoland and jodi.org which, I just noticed, has some kind of Max Paine inspired thing going on right now... http://maxpaynecheatsonly.jodi.org/
  11. Post You Pic Thread

Dude. I don't know how to say this, as it's, I'm sure, a sensitive subject, but, um, you have a flower blooming from your head. You should get that looked at. Here's a picture of me if it was illustrated by Modigliani* * At least, according to this thing. I'd post the "half-ape" picture, but that one was downright scary.
  12. PS3 SixAxis/rumble U-turn imminent?

YES. Good news. Just a month ago Sony said that rumble is for last-gen LOSERS http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3157501 So now, if Sony adds rumble features, the LAST GENERATION can finally begin because they say so. They can stop fucking spinning bullshit and then lying about it when it splatters back all over their faces.
  13. 40 years in prison for porn pop-ups

I saw this a while ago on, I think, boingboing and was amazed at the complete level of idiocy involved. If the justice system has that level of computer literacy, something that you'd expect them to be up on, then it's really no surprise why all that copyright, DRM, anti-game, anti-internet legislation is being pushed by the politicians.
  14. Thunderbird or Outlook Express?

Thunderbird. And, while you're at it, consider yourself lucky that you have the choice. There is a possibility that we will change over here at work and it's a choice between Outlook and Novell Groupwise. :frusty: It's like choosing which you would rather have: yellow or dengue fever.
  15. Super Mario Bros

I maxed it out in SMW and beat Link to the Past in one sitting. ALSO
  16. So what's Crackdown like?

This might be true, but there's something just supremely ludicrous about pissing off a gang and then having their hit squads come after you... driving mobile missile platforms! And then when they come, if you're powerful enough, you just kick them aside as if they were cardboard cutouts. That's something that, obviously, you don't get in GTA. And yes, the driving aspect of this game is a little weak. But, really, the strength with Crackdown is on foot (and in the air, scaling buildings) which counter-balances GTA nicely (its weakness is on foot).
  17. So what's Crackdown like?

Ok, so "Crackdown" is out now and if you can manage to beat the hoards of Halo 3 beta fanboys to get a copy, DO SO. I've played this for about four hours straight today. Spent time killing some gang members and all, but mostly just hopped around building to building, climbing skyscrapers, and building up my agility. Nothing quite like getting a rocket launcher, jumping far up into the sky above the unsuspecting enemies, and dropping a barrage of explosive death at them. The one little problem that I find is that unlike GTA and the like, you really spend a lot of time on foot. On foot, there is no radio... so the game tends to get aurally boring. Even in car. It just plays some nondescript music tracks and that's it. So your own soundtrack is a must. Other than that, I'm liking it so far. No story or anything of that sort. Just "here's a city, here's some bad guys. Get at 'em."
  18. OMG! Video Games blamed with other media, too!

I thought this was going to be a thread about this: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1392554.ece
  19. Play by Email games

I was talking with a friend about strategy games and X-Com came up. He was a big fan back in the day, but I never really played much of it (was always more of a console guy duuurrr). However, I did mention to him that the X-Com guys do make new, similar games still and pointed him towards Laser Squad Nemesis which, for the most part, is a play by email game. So we're thinking of trying it out, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this game or with "play by email" type game in general? I know that Civ IV has a play by email option (I think in the expansion) and I've always wondered how that worked. Would a game of Civ IV, by email, take eight months to finish? Are there any other such strategy games -- at such a slower, unrushed pace -- out there? Maybe for free, even.

  21. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=22805 What everyone predicted would happen with these guys essentially has. Clover is back, sort of. It'll be a long time before the fruits of their labour will bloom, but I'm sure it'll be a rich harvest. er, title should say "plants" -- too many floral analogies for me

  23. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

You forgot Klonoa 2, probably the most underappreciated platformer of the generation.
  24. So what's Crackdown like?

Yeah. The demo is pretty good. I've been looking forward to this game since E3, where it didn't generate any buzz AT ALL, and upon playing the demo... I was disappointed. Didn't like it all that much. But then I played it again and loved it. I can't explain why. I guess what I liked is that you can develop your character how you want for your own play style. During my second playthrough, I focused on growing my agility stats and before the demo was over I was jumping rooftop to rooftop and across the city like a lunatic. And it was fun. Digging around the rooftops and the corners looking for hidden stuff. I like that aspect of it. ALSO: DROP-IN DROP-OUT CO-OP over Live. Which is a great feature (as Gears can attest as it made a very mediocre single player campaign enjoyable -- though, really, it was mostly because we kept making fun of the game design and the stupid dialogue while we were playing it) From the linked review: WTF? Is that a joke? I'm not happy with a game unless it contains 238 sounds!
  25. Blog-engines?

WordPress is great. However, if you like customizing your output at all, it is a pain in the ass. It has a totally shit "template system" -- and by "template system" I mean a whole bunch of PHP pages with HTML strewn across it. (Hello, separation of content and markup anyone?) I migrated a site from Movable Type to WordPress and it was such a chore (since I wanted to keep my exact layout/design -- basically, an invisible transition). AND I KNOW PHP. I can't imagine what it's like to those that do not. But if that's not a big deal, then yes. WordPress is great.
