  1. Guitar Hero III (and demo!)

It is so not you. I am with you 100%, even about the Slayer song and "One" (though I *just* finally beat that fucker. ) I was just writing about this. I don't know if it's the songs or just the fret patterns, but most of these songs are sooo repetitive and boring. There are a few standouts (Dead Kennedys and "Cliffs of Dover" are really fun to play) but overall I'm finding the songs kinda dull... which is a shame cause some of these I was really looking forward to. Guitar Hero is dead. Long live Rock Band! Edit: oh, and I was just playing the game on Medium after getting stuck on that Slayer song on Hard and I made it to that first boss battle. I had no trouble getting through it on Hard, but I failed on Medium. I was playing the song fine but, unfortunately, that has no bearing on whether you win. I used a bunch of items on Morello to get him to screw up but since this was Medium difficulty there weren't enough notes for him to miss and the rock meter doesn't go down as fast enough and all the other times the computer would 100% and get that meter back up to green. Eventually the song ended and I lost. I felt like I had no control over the outcome. It was grade A stupid.
  2. Guitar Hero III (and demo!)

So I'm playing GH3 and I'm finding myself less than enthused. It's making me want to bring out Guitar Hero 1 and 2, really. I can't put my finger on it. The game is competent and it plays the same but it's just missing that soul, I think. It doesn't have that kind of charm and universal appeal that Harmonix was going for. Gamey boss battles A presentation with far less irreverence. More skankiness. I doesn't feel the same.
  3. Compy emergency

Your thoughts are costing the thumb in bandwidth costs! They really are worth two cents. Or, more likely, .002 cents. Thoughts come cheap on the internet.

There are plenty of open source Flash compilers, but none have the integrated timeline/graphics tools. They're all code only. http://osflash.org/
  5. Did you play that little music box mini-game (with the Ghosts and Goblins music? I suck ass at it). And there's all sorts of little Capcom items to find and so on. Just a finely crafted game with a stupid title. More people should be playing it. ESPECIALLY THE PEOPLE HERE (except you poor sods in Europe that can't cause it's not out. Sorry.)
  6. Everyone was doing it

SUBSCRIBE*D I don't understand why people -- some people here -- have such a hard time keeping things updated. I mean, I know there are jobs and LIFE and other things to get in the way, yet people still find time to post on message boards all the time. Unless you established some kind of essay level of quality with your weblog from the start (MISTAKE), I don't see what the problem is? Note: this is coming from someone who's weblog will be having its 8th year birthday in December.
  7. Well, I've been playing it tonight and after a bit of a tedious intro/tutorial sequence (kind of typical of most Japanese games, especially Capcom -- I'm looking at you Okami ) I'm finally in the game proper and after two levels I'm liking it a lot! Already fell victim to insta-death too, for all you adventure gaming masochists And I like how each level is it's own thing since it does away (at least, so far) with the thing I hate about adventure games, keeping track of items/things/people half-way across the map and then fetching things to them. It's nicely contained and it's really about the PUZZLES and so far they've made clever use of the remote. For example, this is REALLY EARLY but I'll save spoilers Also, it does seem to draw a lot of "inspiration" from Wind Waker... but in a good way. Maybe this thread deserves a clearer title (or a new thread altogether?).
  8. TF2 Thumbs Tournament

At times like this I regret the fact that I do everything but game on my PC.
  9. Be Kind, Rewind

I thought this was going to be about http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/wristcutters/ but this is fine, even if it's old. Maybe we need a MOVIE TRAILER thread? Also this looks like it has potential, even if it's a really small, badly embeded Flash video with no subtitles http://www.wildbunch-distribution.com/fichefilm.php?id=75
  10. AWESOME NEW MOVIE TRAILER http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-us&vid=5f8f582d-038e-45eb-a7ca-be8c8748170b I love it when movies do computers! Like when CSI does

I tend to get an error just before the scoreboard
  12. Rigby

I've fallen UP and I can't get DOWN.
  13. How to survive a Zombie Apocalypse

It's improper to assume that everyone is a user, or even a fan of, that wasteland called digg.
  14. Guitar Hero III (and demo!)

I think about a third to half of the songs are master recordings, so the Pearl Jam one IS the original. No Eddie Vedder wannabe here. Shows you what success does to your music licensing options...
  15. Zero Punctuation

I wouldn't go that far. It was a bunch of college kids that programmed it, remember. And in their version you could set portals through other portals. Also: Prey. And Prey is a good example because, really, presentation is the key thing again.
  16. How to survive a Zombie Apocalypse

Why link to the digg and not the actual content? :shifty: Also, it reminds me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnNIs4YKtZM
  17. Every Extend Extra

PS. Here's that write-up I said I'd do: http://the-inbetween.com/2007/10/19/every-extend-extra-extreme/ (I figure since The Thumb is nothing but a weblog aggregator now, I can get away with this self-plug.)
  18. Every Extend Extra

I think it's worth a buy but there are no Q? games that I wouldn't say that about (99 Nights doesn't exist ). It's... quite different from the PSP game. The mechanic is the same, of course, but it plays out differently. I like it more than the PSP, actually. It's much more of a long-haul zen-like experience, like the standard modes in Lumines, than it was previously. ESPECIALLY compared to the original which was the ultimate 2 minute game, IMO. Playing to the beat of your own music is cool but getting the proper BPM setup is a bit tedious. There is a TIMED mode so you don't have to play the game for two hours straight. There's also a standard shooter game and, of course, nice music and art direction (I'm doing a writeup about this game for my weblog). Also, this is the only game that I have ever played in which my high score is in the TRILLIONS. Seriously. At one point, I pressed one button and scored several hundred billion points. (And if you haven't played the FREEWARE original, do so now. It's great.)
  19. Bionic Commando returns

The early word makes it sounds horrible. Watch this interview http://kotaku.com/gaming/clip/bionic-commando-producer-talks-bionic-commando-311190.php After talking about some ridiculous storyline they start talking about how they decided to pick the colours. After the guy said the F word ("Focus Group"), I tuned out the rest.
  20. Portal

If anything, it shows you how superficial most characters in games really are. That cube has more character than Master Chief. All hail inanimate carbon rod weighted companion cube!. Addendum: Still Alive - radio mix.mp3"]http://the-inbetween.com/dump/audio/[Portal] Still Alive - radio mix.mp3
  21. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Yeah. It's pretty good. The first few songs are especially ace, though it gets a little weaker in the rest of the album. I've been really liking "Somatik - Learning The Colours" lately. Very very good album. Also, the more I listen to it the more I think "Kilimajaro Darkjazz Ensemble" is one of the best albums of last year. I guess I've been in a bit of a jazzy/jazz-fusion kind of mood because of it. Also: new Venetian Snares! Can-Con represent. But yes, listen to Kilimajaro Darkjazz Ensemble. It's fantastic.
  22. Gwarek's not bad himself. I think, if I remember correctly, I'm only around 8 mil.
  23. Apartment hunting

    The apartment hit you?
  24. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

It's just a cheap marketing ploy. I believe those mp3s are 160kbps ( ) and they've said that when the CD comes out it will include tracks that aren't available in the download. It's just to make money until the proper BIG LABEL release is out the door and a means to mitigate any advance leaks. It's not as big of a revolution as some people make it out to be. Save your money for the proper album. As for the album, it's
  25. Portal

Story aside, anybody trying the challenges? I just got my first silver on the first one and plenty of bronzes on the "least portals" challenges. Still trying to figure out the one with the turrets and the companion cube -- I'm off by one on both of those. Any tips? Also, are the time limits for the "time challenges" the same on PC as on the XBox? Anyone know? If they are then it's retarded as it's obviously slower and harder to aim on a 360 controller.
