The official 'Welcome N0wak to London' thread
n0wak replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Idle Banter
Should be good for me. I'm thinking of going to Edinburgh next weekend but am waiting on confirmation from a friend. He is awfully slow and every day he takes the fare goes up in price He might suggest the next next weekend so we'll see, but for now it's good for me. -

I'm good with anywhere: London, Brighton or both. I will go down to Brighton a few times this summer (probably for "Flash on the Beach", maybe for "Develop" and certainly for tourist day tripping and photo taking.) I'm too new to suggest venues since I don't know any but I'm available anytime with at least a day's notice. I'm flexible. (I will also be going to Bath and Edinburgh, but dunno if there are any Thumbers in these places). -
I can bring the knowledge of Canadian geography, ice hockey and which celebrity, to your surprise, is actually canadian (Seth Rogan?) Probably not all that useful for a British pub trivia night, but there you have it. (BTW, is anyone going to "Develop" in Brighton later this summer? I'm curious but the conference is way too pricy.)
-
Aye! I'm free whenever since I'm not working so tell me when's good. I'm NW but am mostly in the city centre everyday except when the weather sucks (like now).

I've been contemplating upgrading my iPod touch too ($10 for a firmware update? Fuck you Apple) and that is definitely one of the games I'm most curious about. iPod/Phone gaming seems to be really viable option nowadays, especially since it's open to average joe developers (hello Nintendo, Sony ) though, at the same time, it means you do get a ton of shitty AAAASolitaire games and the like. Don't know if paying $10 for the privilege to wade through that cesspool is worth it. But do post impressions. I'm curious. (The only reason I have a touch is because it came with the MacBook, but it has proven extremely valuable walking around London, posting to Twitter, checking maps and email. Can't leave without it now!)

Sup people. I'm in London (in a flat in Willesden Green) and will likely go to Brighton next week-ish too. If anyone wants to meet up, have a pint or play some Rockband tell me (also, I have more drums experience than the last time I posted here since my sister bought some drums for use on my XBox before I moved out).

So the demo for Guitar Hero III is available. Sort of. It was a bonus with the Tony Hawk but someone, somewhere figured out that there's no copy protection on it so you can just burn it to a disc and get it working. I tried and it works great! http://www.xboxlivetheguide.co.uk/News/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1653&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 I played it and felt a little less than enthused about it. No doubt, GH3 will sell millions -- maybe even millions more than Rock Band -- but I find myself being drawn to Harmonix's game more. Playing it feels like the same old thing but slightly off. Things like the UI and the texture of the notes don't feel right. I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't come across as a Harmonix game anymore. It's something else now. And as a fan of Harmonix, I don't think I like that.

I don't mean with random media. I mean interoperability with Live, which was meant to be this great unifying platform.
-
But there's already a platform like the PC: the PC. Microsoft tried (and failed) to create a standard brand for gamers on the PC with its "Games For Windows" and "Live" initiatives and now we're supposed to believe that they're just going to open up their locked-in console to whomever wants to build it? Really? They made lofty promises about that whole push (interoperability between PC/XBox. Connectivity with mobile devices, Zune, etc) and delivered on none of them. Instead, their great new upcoming feature is... Mii-like virtual avatars? Way to market lead there. The idea is a good one and it's been around for a long time (this is essentially what 3DO did) but I just don't see it flying in Microsoft's hands.

From my experience, the only side mission really worth doing -- most are fairly skippable, unless you want to accumulate crap to sell and money and EXP -- is the one . It rewards you with new abilities.

And that's a good thing. Compare my scores: n0wak

This is the only reason I'm somewhat wanting to see this movie. Not because the fight sequence, but because it was filmed about a block from where I live. I want to spot all the local landmarks!

It took me a solid day of driving, including sleeping in the car, to drive out of the province. Traversing the country is like four times that.

I'm an immigrant. I've never been on the west-coast of Canada (sue me, it's a huge country), but Vancouver is a nice place to live. As long as you stay out of east downtown. Tech jobs are fairly plentiful in Canada though I honestly can't speak for your field or where to find stuff like that. The rest of BC is nice too but, outside of the general Vancouver-area, everything tends to get a lot smaller and rural and, no doubt, not as job-filled. Still nice places to go, with all the mountains and everything, but not if you're looking for work. And since you're from the UK you shouldn't mind the frequent rains in the area.

Toronto. And yes Weak on drums (don't own them) and I won't bore you with my monotone singing, but I can play expert guitar. I'm not quite at Miffy's level of insanity but I can hold my own.

I haven't been playing much of anything or even watching much of anything, save for the European Championships and the odd BSG episode, so I don't have much to contribute. Mostly I've been working a shit-ton and preparing and organizing things and doing all this shit in anticipation of the "move" to the UK in three weeks. I'll be in London on the 8th. Might go down to Brighton after that for... stuff If anyone wants to meet-up with an awkward Canadian, let me know! Totally adequate times can be possibly had.

Actually, from everything I've heard so far, it's because of .

Two words: Citation Needed. Before you go around espousing the reality of the ark, back that shit up. I don't see how a four thousand year old myth is somehow more valid and realistic and "historical" than a one thousand year old myth. Anyway, getting back on topic I watched two Richard Widmark films over the weekend: Panic in the Streets and Kiss of Death. Panic was so-so, but Kiss of Death was fantastic. What a classic, timeless villain. And that one scene...

Yes. Seriously. If you aren't anal about the obviously "meant for the family" aspects of the graphics then you will have a lot of fun with this.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Saucer Men From Mars
n0wak replied to Cigol's topic in Video Gaming
Obviously, your research was incomplete. You failed to account for me. And I hate to be a detractor because I *loved* the first Metal Gear Solid and even liked MGS2, despite some of , but, honestly, I'm so sick of Kojima's shit. It's a lousy, nonsense story wrapped around all too-short bits of game. I think if the game bits weren't there, and he was making a movie as he so clearly wanted, he'd be laughed out of the room. But because the interactive segments are good (and because they were rather progressive for a console game in the first go round) people let him off the hook for all the idiocy. Meh -
Oh. Yes. It's in the Bible. That book is never wrong about anything.
-
Wait... what? I haven't seen it yet, but do you people realize that the new Indiana Jones movie was originally supposed to be Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men from Mars. I guess "the big three" changed their minds--somewhat--again.

Man, just watched this episode thanks to the powers of The Internet, and it was a real let down. They built and built and built over the last few episodes. Leave with Six getting shot and the basestar jumping, instantly, with the president and Baltar onboard and then... follow it up with a flatulent flatline. Way to keep the momentum going there dudes.

I'm holding out for American Graffiti II: The Wolfman Returns
