  1. Dubious Honors

It's a measure of critical acclaim against actual sales. While the other games (and Valkyria Chronicles) are good choices, none of them had the kind of praise and all out industry-boosting that World of Goo had. It sold well, relative to many things, but not well compared to how much acclaim it had. Sadly. It was also pirated a lot which can account for it seeming to have more sales than it actually had. Welcome to gaming on the PC Oh, and Culdcept Saga is really good but it's the definition of niche so there's no surprise that no one bought it. Still, I had some good online games in that.
  2. The Club

haha. So did I. Haven't cracked it open, but it's sitting right here.
  3. Dubious Honors

The only thing dubious is their game of the year pick
  4. I have one of those but it doesn't work anymore
  5. I'm in like Rin Tin-Tin Hopefully I won't be late this time. Stupid XBox controller batteries
  6. PS. Not all moves in Minotaur China Shop are destruction based. There's the one that lets you shake off arrows and the calm-down, zen one. Also, the charge is quite useful for serving customers as it gets you a nice speed burst (as long as you're careful).
  7. That online SimCity-esque game sounds like something that existed very early around 2000,2001 and so. I forget what it was called but it was by an Ottawa company and it seemed to exist in perpetual beta, but I think it was actually released at some point. it was basically a SimCity MMO but instead of making a city on your own and interacting with other cities, everyone built within the same city. There was a whole economic system so you had to be careful what businesses or whatever you built and where you built them. They had all these complex economic and social systems. I think even in-game mayors, that had to be voted in (with campaigns and everything) which could then zone land and so on. It was hugely ambitious and I know it was working but it never seemed to catch on. This was years before EVE Online. For all I know, that game's still going on somewhere. Can't remember what it's called though. Star something. I don't know. Also: eXistenZ is ten years old now.
  8. 2100, I think... ? I'll still be on.
  9. The passing of time

    Yeah, sorry, Dead Rising.
  10. $t€4md!

On the plus side, you guys normally get five weeks vacation (if not more) so you have more time to play these games than the equivalent North Americans who are lucky to get two weeks.
  11. The passing of time

Yeah, the Last Express is a good one because the whole point of the game is that it takes place in real time with a fixed deadline. Majora's Mask does similar stuff. Representing long passages of time in games is always awkward because, often, it is tied to narrative elements and/or scripted moments. If a game lets you explore outside of those it kind of falls to pieces. Like, say, in GTA. You can do one mission, then dick around for days (watch a full day/night cycle pass thrice, without eating or sleeping) and then do another mission that kind of exists outside of the continuum. Everything is urgent only when you're doing it, otherwise it can wait. It comes with the territory, I guess. Dead Space tried to do a real-time mission structure on top of a generally free form game, and it got a lot of flak for it. Personally, I really appreciated what it was trying to do and understand the reasoning for its save system, but it became obvious that a lot of people don't have patience for that kind of structure. It's always easier to play on your own terms rather than being forced to keep a schedule over a game, unless the game is very generous and loose about it (Animal Crossing.) So, yes, games in which time exists in a meaningful manner: The Last Express Dead Space Majora's Mask Animal Crossing and sequels
  12. Imagine if all this money spent on domains was actually spent on donations to idlethumbs to cover its hosting costs :shifty:
  13. haha this is getting out of hand. Was the .com taken?
  14. About 5pm EST, I believe. Though I saw people online earlier for the last one, around 4pm. I'll be on.
  15. sexy failures

    Yes. .
  16. sexy failures

And baldness is a hair colour and not collecting stamps is a hobby.
  17. Little BIG Planet

So, uh, anyone manage to collect all the items yet? Because I've been trying to do it co-op with my sister and we've been having a bitch of a time finding them, even on the easiest levels. We've been through "Get a Grip" -- the second level -- about ten times and can't manage to find ten percent of the items. I know there are some 3x and 4x challenges later in the game that I need other people for, but this is getting kind of annoying. I'm trying to get all the trophies here Similarly, anyone want to get online to do the "play with three people in your friends list" one?
  18. Ad fail

Just to be clear, I was in no way endorsing that link. It was just something topical I saw a while ago. I believe the comment I left on del.icio.us was "douchebags all around".
  19. Ridiculous

You Brits sure like them female pop songstresses, don't you? That was about all I heard on the radio for two months when I was there.
  20. Ad fail

You're thinking of Branson. Also check out this Garriot related story that I saw and linked last month http://frank-segler.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-astronaut-tried-to-sue-me-really.html
  21. he/she = e

English is kind of deficient in such words. There's also no real equivalent to the French "vous" and it can be annoying. It gets a bad rap for being all redneck, but "y'all" is a good substitute when you think about it.
  22. Game Damage

    Selective memory is selective
  23. Also: Spheroid sounds a lot like Splume.
  24. Holy shit that VIDEOPERAGAME was epic.
