I'm lucky enough to have both a DS and a PSP. I bought the DS and was given the PSP as a gift from the company I work for. My DS gets ALOT more action than the PSP. Nintendo understand handheld philosophy alot better than Sony do it seems. I completely agree with nowak on this ... ... except replace "Ridge Racer" with "Wipeout Pure". The DS is a real handheld system ... its quick to boot, has long battery life, has cheap games, and the games are literally the "5-10 minute" games that handhelds require. One of the other neat things on the DS is how the sleep mode works ... it's simply flipping the thing shut. I love that, 'cos it feels so natural. The PSP requires you to flick the Power button ... but not too long, otherwise it shuts off! And even then the sleep mode isn't quite as instant as the DS. But the PSP is kinda cool too. There's no denying it's far more stylish than the DS in terms of the hardware itself and the graphics. It's great that you can just hook the thing up to the PC via USB ... no need to dick around with custom ROM burners and things like that. But then, owning a PSP is a shallow experience. I have only one game for it : Wipeout Pure. It was awesome for the first week or so, for the whole "OMG, LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS!!!" but after the initial experience, it's not so great. I've owned it for 2 months and I'm not really compelled to get anything else ... I'll get Luminies later, but thats all that really appeals. Whereas on the DS I've got 3 games for it (WarioWare, Meteos and Yoshis Touch & Go) and I STILL want a couple more games. In short : DS pwns PSP SiN

Darwinia is finally here! In case you don't know, Darwinia is from the makers of the rather excellent Uplink. These guys have spent the last 3 years of their lives making the odd (what i would call) action-rts in a retro-trippy world. Check out www.darwinia.co.uk for more info The demo is available, and refreshingly, its a mere 10 megs to download. Having played it last night, I can safely say the game is awesome, but confusing. It'll take you a while to understand whats going on, but once you do, it's simply amazing! The game is gonna be released on the 4th of March. Now the problem is getting some cash to buy this game ... Yeah, I kinda should have said "what direction they've taken Prince of Persia" to. I loved Sands Of Time, but thought that WW pretty much sucked. SiN

You realize all of us here hate what UbiSoft has done to Prince of Persia, right? SiN

speaking of quakecon, anyone know where i can download john carmacks keynote address? was hoping to watch it this year as opposed to reading it. SiN

yeah, i dont know what it is about that screenie, but it looks horrible! the ones nick posted, though, are ace! SiN

I also find it quite odd that this game hasn't really gotten any hype. hope it'll turn out good, as it seems like a neat enough concept. SiN

LOL! ;D Hilarious stuff. I especially like Jackie Chan as Chun Li! Also, the "hadooken ... sonic boom ... hadooken ... sonic boom ... hadooken ... sonic boom ... hadooken ... sonic boom ..." was great in a "funny cos its true" type way. I *think* I've watched that movie. But like, 10 years ago or something. What movie is that from then? SiN

Yeah, don't really bother arguing over which one better ... everyone has their own opinion. I'm definitly an nVidia guy, but whichever way you go, I'm sure you'll end up with a solid video card. SiN

I'm going to pretend I didn't read that. SiN

Just saw the Quake4 video ... looks amazing! Good ol' fast-paced multiplayer deathmatch action! Also, that commentator woman was pretty good, and looked kinda cute ... wish we saw a bit more of her than fatality or whoever! SiN

there are some really cheap pixelshader 1.x cards out there ... the geforce fx 5200 comes to mind ... i bought one a year or two ago for less than C$ 100 ... i played psychonauts on a card worse than it (GeForce FX 5200 Go ... the laptop version of the card) and it worked fine on the lower settings. it's well worth the investment to get a slightly more expensive card though, seeing as most (if not all) next gen games will need some sort of pixel shader compatibility. QUAKE. THREE. ARENA. You shouldnt really need any other multiplayer fps game. SiN

I do agree that DF's next game won't be another 4 years in development. However, whatever they make is certainly going to be expensive. We all know that the next DF game is going to have great dialogue and a great art style. Thats great and all, but with that comes high production values. Lots of time developing content, and expensive voice actors means that whatever DF make will be expensive. I'm just worried that publishers will be a bit weary of signing DF on for that reason. SiN

the line was more along the lines of "tim couldn't do his job, so things were going shit ... he hired me, leaving him time to do his job ... things went well". not quite. post mortems talk about what went right and wrong with the development of the game ... not with whether it was a success or not. why it didn't sell well has nothing to do with the development process on the game, so it wasn't mentioned. Great read. $20 says Dougie was the inspiration for The Milkman Yeah, they got rid of a whole team and no-one knew it! I'm quite surprized. However, it really isn't as bad as other companies have had it. Ion Storm comes to mind as a company with a disasterous walk-out. Xatrix (?) too ... the guys who made Kingpin. Literally the whole team left after the game was done! It's also quite a pity that Schafer had to do all those other jobs instead of working on the game. I get the feeling with their next game he'll take a far more "hand-on" approach to development. Actually, I just hope there is a next game!!! I get the feeling there will be, but it really can't be another 4-year in development game. DF can't afford that. SiN

I read the Ancel interview ... this bit made me very happy Good to know that Ancel wasn't pressured into putting clips from the movie in just for the sake of doing so. What surprized me even more was that even when movie clips could have been put in, they arent. I definitly love that ... mixing movies and games like that really kill the atmosphere. Also, this made me smile SiN

i havent played an adventure game ive liked in AGES, but this one actually seemed pretty good ... ... ive gotta agree with Steve about the trailer ... it does look a bit silly, but I don't think it'll be that bad. Looks like a winner to me. SiN

this doesnt really count, but the Nintendo DS boot up logo is awesome. i dunno what it is about it, but the sharp logo, simple animation, and the sound just click together real well. [edit] also, you could!?!? i played B&W to death and didnt know that. how could you play with it? [/edit] SiN

before anyone else says it : lucasarts. the fact that they take the time to make a different lucasarts logo intro movie for each game is awesome now if only their games weren't shit ... SiN

holy shit. he's absolutely right. im honestly a bit astounded. its just come to me right now ... shit, i'm geniuenly quite worried. it just struck me as to how different multicore programming is going to be. read this Gabe quote: that is very critical. i know, it doesnt seem like a big deal ... "whats the problem if code runs out of order?" ... but it is. programmers are able to debug as proficiently as they can and optimize code as well as they do because they can tell exactly how the program is going to work ... its completely predictable. the second you don't know what order your code is running in, its trouble. when a program crashes you can't be positive which code ran first. when your optimizing code you cant assume so-and-so was excuted before this code. more importantly, as a university student majoring in compsci, i cant say any time has been dedicated to multicore coding ... now granted, im just going to enter second year, but i'm quite sure multicore coding is not a mandatory class. in other words, most coders dont have a clue about how to tackle multicore coding .... result? buggier code for sure. i should also mention that (regardless of what you think of his games) john carmack has a knack for looking into the future of technology. he's stated somewhere-or-the-other that he'll be sticking to PC coding because he likes the simple "one cpu, one gpu" setup. when THE technical wizard of our industry doesnt want to touch multicore coding, what hope does that leave to the rest? on the plus side, im next to positive the revolution will be a single core ... go nintendo!
