Thanks. I was afraid I was going to have to post a birthday message to myself. How sad would that be? Oh wait, nevermind.

I just hope that the movie's funnier than that trailer. Too summer-blockbuster-oriented. But I'm not going to analyze it to death now. I'm keeping the faith.

Are you sure that's not his wife?

Man, what a depressing comment. Screw those thousands or millions of people.

I just finished it too. I don't know if this is sacrilege but I actually liked it more than the original. I just felt more compelled to finish this one maybe because there seems to be more of a noble purpose to this one whereas the first was really just survival. I think a corrupt government makes a better enemy than misunderstood space aliens (I mean the Vortigaunts turned out to be slaves in the first one so now I feel bad for killing so many of them there). Although HL2 was kind of oblique, I still think I got a lot more out of this one than the first where half the time I wondered what the purpose of all of it was. Between the resistance's comments to you and Breen's speeches, you pretty much got the idea. But damn, if HL3 is the last one, they better explain a hell of a lot more (especially the G-Man) or people are going to be pissed. Well, at least I will.

Well, I've gone ahead and pre-ordered mine (PS2 version). What's everybody else waiting for?

When I first glanced at this thread, I thought it was about the show Father Ted of which I'm a big fan. So I'm a little disappointed that it's just some Freudian analysis about having sex with your favorite game designer.

They were way better before they sold out.

I think GameSpot got burned last time by overpraising MGS2 (there's no way that game deserved a 9.6!) so they're being a little more careful this time.

He looks like he should be the Joker in Batman. I feel bad because he'll get the child-star-gone-to-hell coverage but it was only a little weed. We all...I mean, I have friends that use it and it's no big deal.

Even though I bought this game (for $50! Damn you Ray!), I can't seem to get motivated to play it. I've maybe gotten through an hour. Part of the problem is that it's glitchy on my computer (although I've heard it's glitchy on every computer). The other part is that I'm a little bit tired of open-ended gameplay. You can be good, you can be bad, you can join these guys, you can join these girls. What was ever wrong with a good, tight linear story? (I'll probably start playing it again here soon and love it.)

Girl tells Guy: Fable is shit. Navigating our game world is a bitch.

Can we get more pictures of her quotes from her in reviews? Who knows her anyway? -
I was unemployed last year and I played a lot of games. So I associate games with not having to get up way too early in the morning and go to a crummy job. I'm sorry. That's a conscious association, not an unconscious one.

Looking forward to this one. Owen Wilson is in the last picture and he's great too (when he's in a good movie). I was a little disappointed in The Royal Tenenbaums but I think this one will be better.

I remember seeing that show ('Icons', I believe) last year so it was probably done well before the layoffs. I mean, Simon Jeffrey and Tom Sarris were in it and they left...what? A year ago? I vaguely remember hearing someone say that Sam n Max was George Lucas' favorite LucasArts game. Either that's completely wrong or I guess that he didn't like it enough to prevent the cancellation of SM2.

Adventure thoughts by someone whose 'heart is not in it'
peb replied to Intrepid Homoludens's topic in Video Gaming
I can understand not wanting a game with action elements, but I liken adventure game purists to Christian fundamentalists: not willing to expand their worldview past a strict, hyperliteral interpretation of ancient rules. AG purists are less scary though. -
He's squeezing the life out of her! Just like LucasArts squeezed the life out of adventures!

I have G4TechTV on my digital cable tier. You can go to G4techTV.com but I haven't found the Schafer thing yet. Any idea what show it was? I agree with Marek that the best shows on this channel are the ones without hosts (Icons, Cinematech).

Yes, that's exactly what I was talking about. And judging by the info on those sites, they're a little late on their early 2002 deadline. I assume it's been canned.
-
Yes there was another in development (C'mon, do platform, FPS and Infocom belong in the same sentence? Give me some credit.). You had an Arthur Dent avatar and you ran around snapping your towel at aliens (presumably). I remember that the developers said that they were almost done with the game when Douglas Adams died. I don't know if that put a monkey wrench in the whole thing or what. I want to say this game was being developed in Europe but that's all I can recall about it today.

I hate you. (In a nonhateful way of course)

Looking at the IMDB, it's amazing to me how outright racist (there I said it) people are talking about this casting choice. If you're going to argue that Adams said something in the 3rd novel about Prefect looking like a bronzed country star (feel free to call me on this; I'm recalling from my hazy memory) and that means he can't be black, first of all, you're too far down the nerd curve and need to take it a little less seriously and second, think about what you're saying and tell me that isn't the definition of racism. [/High and mighty vent OFF] On a more innocuous note, does anybody know what happened to the Hitchhiker's game that was in production awhile back? It looked a little too platformy or FPS-like for my tastes, but I'm still curious about what happened to it.

I would think that since Pyschonauts has been in development for...what, ten years now, that they should have a pretty bug-free game. But I'd have to agree with the consensus and hope that they release it after the Xmas season.

I'm a little disturbed that Jackson remains on the 20 dollar bill. Put James Madison or somebody a little more neutral on it. And I have no doubt that if Bush was president in Andrew Jackson's time, he would own a hell of a lot of slaves.
-
I think that 4 more years of Bush will increase the chances of destruction of the non-US world more than the U.S. But all you non-American Thumbs are welcome to stay at my house. I've got an extra room. Look, Kerry is a tool and in a perfect world, I wouldn't have to vote for him. But it's been narrowed down to Bush vs. Kerry so we (Americans) only have two choices. If it's a lesser evil, so what? Things aren't going to turn around drastically in November. Hell, things probably haven't changed much since Jefferson and Hamilton started bitching at each other in the 1790's. I'm old enough to realize that any candidate for a political office higher than church secretary is going to be flawed. I find it funny that people here are criticizing Kerry's Middle East policy when Bush has done more to increase instability in that region by pissing off the Arab world with another war for oil. On the homefront, I can't think of anything Bush has done except lower taxes for rich people and try to pass an amendment banning gay marriage. So if you're rich or hate homosexuals and Arabs (which sadly is a pretty large voting bloc in the U.S.), he's your man.
