  1. I'm sure quite a few bods out there have played Sid Mier's Pirates now, indeed I've heard people rave about the original for years. When this new version got released I (finally) decided to take the plunge and see what the fuss was all about..........

Sure it looks nice, it plays reasonably well and it's almost fun! But am I the only who finds the whole the damn experience completely unchallenging? I've only ever lost one fight, I've got married, found my sister, become a high ranking official in all nations, found all the treasure, killed all the other pirates, done pretty much everything else... all on the second highest difficulty level....

... and I'm still on my first game!

Is it just me or does this game offer no challenge (other than the time-consuming difficulty of navigating the carribean in slow motion)? I'm far from a decent gamesplayer, surely others have noticed this gaping flaw?

  2. Ooh! This is an interesting subject! One thing I'm positive of, Kurt was killed, he didn't kill himself. I think Tom Grant put it best himself in a recent post on his website. He sums it up perfectly:

Before you read about the investigation . . .

    LET'S KEEP THIS SIMPLE

After Kurt Cobain was found dead, his toxicology report indicated he had a heroin, (morphine) blood level of 1.52 mgs. This is three times a lethal dose, even for a hard core heroin addict! So, I'll begin by reminding readers that what I'm about to say is what I've said in nearly every interview I've done for more than ten years now.

When it comes to the so-called "expert" opinions,

DONT TELL US -- SHOW US!

Expert "opinions" about what might be possible make for interesting conversation but they don't mean a thing unless they can back them up with experience and examples. Experts hired by prosecution and defense attorneys disagree in courtrooms around the country every day.

Using similar cases as examples, however, can prove whether or not something is possible. So, all I've ever asked is for someone to prove I'm wrong by showing me where it's happened before. If there are no examples or cases with a heroin blood level similar to the Cobain case, the medical evidence uncovered in Cobain's autopsy must be so unusual, so rare, that his alleged "suicide" would have to be called "miraculous" rather than "typical" as the Seattle authorities would lead us to believe.

What do I mean by a "similar case"? For more than 10 years now, I've challenged doctors, nurses, paramedics, police detectives and even journalists to provide a single documented case that meets the following criteria:

    1. The heroin blood level was determined AFTER the person was found dead.
    2. The person had INJECTED the heroin, (or had been injected by someone else), directly into the veins of his or her arm(s).
    3. The heroin, (morphine), blood level of the deceased person was found to be equal to or higher than 1.53 mgs per liter.
    4. There is evidence within the reports or other documentation, such as eyewitness statements or other indications of activity, indicating the victim was not immediately incapacitated after the injection and would have been capable of doing what Cobain was alleged to have done.

If you examine the criteria carefully, you'll see that what I'm asking for is not a complex set of circumstances at all. The "similar case" I'm describing might involve a murder, a suicide, an accidental overdose or even a car accident. It doesn't matter!

There are literally hundreds of thousands of well documented heroin related deaths in the U.S. and around the world. Cases where the victim was found dead and during the autopsy, heroin was found to be in his or her blood system. That's hundreds of thousands of cases that meet the criteria of items 1 and 2.

There are also thousands of documented cases which would meet the criteria of items 1,2, AND 3! These would be deaths involving heroin blood levels equaling or even surpassing the level found in Kurt Cobain. Remember though, these people died from the heroin.

Now, out of the thousands of those deaths meeting the first three criteria, just try to find ONE that also meets criteria #4 - Documented evidence within the circumstances surrounding the person's death that establishes this person was not immediately incapacitated and would have been capable of voluntary physical activity for the time required to do what Kurt Cobain was alleged to have done.

During one of my interviews in the Broomfield film, Kurt And Courtney, Nick Broomfield commented, (as if asking the question), "But it's possible that he would have been able to operate the shotgun."

"Well, it's possible if you believe that a man can stand on a roof top, flap his arms and fly!" I replied. "But you're going to have to show me that it's actually been done, before I'll believe it!"

Broomfield was confused because he had contacted a doctor in England who erroneously compared the swallowing of methadone to the intravenous injection of heroin. It was obvious this doctor completely missed the point. The swallowing of heroin, morphine, methadone, or even rat poison is completely irrelevant here since the reaction time from swallowing would be vastly slower than that of an intravenous injection.

The fact is, as of this date, not a single "similar case" has been provided or even offered for the purpose of gathering information. To the contrary, every letter we've received from medical professionals or those in law enforcement has been extremely skeptical of the "suicide" ruling based on Cobain's heroin blood levels. "Impossible" is the word most often used.

Examine the evidence. Have a close look at the real facts. This is not rocket science.

The medical evidence alone proves beyond a reasonable doubt . . .

    KURT COBAIN WAS MURDERED

The more you read, the scarier it gets. This is the only "conspiracy" thing I believe in, and that's simply because it seems so obvious and there's absolutely no other explanation.

For the record I don't hate Courtney Love (I'd actually gone off her after the second time I saw her live and she did the exact same things... one big act!) and I'd never even heard of the "Murder Conspiracies" before Nick Broomfield's film was shown on TV. After I watched that documentary I concluded that Kurt most likely killed himself... but then for some odd reason (I was bored I guess) I look it up on the internet. The more I read the more obvious it became... it's scary! I recemmend everyone to at least read the arguments fully before making up their minds!

  3. Hi all, I'm trying to find a copy of RealMyst (the version of Myst that's actually real-time 3D) but every copy on eBay goes for like $40-$50. For a game that's so old it's ridiculous! Anyone know of any online retail stores that might have a more reasonable price? Or indeed, anywhere else I could find it?

    Thanks muchly!

  4. I probably shouldn't have included Crimson Skies, but the Last Express? People might know about it here, but generally speaking, no one else does. Right before the game was first released, Broderbund's entire marketing team quit. The game was taken out of the market quite soon after its release due to some internal problems at Broderbund, and it was a massive flop. I think it certainly deserves its place in a list like this.

Yipe! That's terrible! :( Why was it taken off the market? It should have been one of the most noted games ever... it's unbelievable!

  5. I disagree based on its inability to play certain games plus a number of user specific bugs.

Any games (or applications) that don't work are mostly the fault of said games or applications... ie. The programmers did something that Microsoft told them not to do as it was naughty, and they did it anyway. MS have pulled in the reigns to improve stability and security and have removed many little "hacks" that shouldn't have been there in the first place. (Ironically this included their version of Virtual PC -- they had to fix it after SP2!)

Besides, most IT technicians are not fussed about you not being able to play obscure games! ;)

  6. Yup, it's hard to know how to sell it, I think. Being able to "enter people's minds" is an idea that sounds like the game could be total shit. Of course we know Tim Schafer is a genius, but it's hard to sell the game and go... "but wait! it's really clever and good, honest!".

Another angle might be the storyline aspect: Kid runs away from home, has special powers and decides to join a camp that will train him to become a "Pyschonaut" -- an astronaut for people's minds. (My favourite angle.)

The last one is: "It's a fun platformer! Look! Wheeeeee!" (The gameplay itself doesn't look exactly earth-shatteringly original -- although I DO think it looks fun!)

How to cram all this down 10-17 year-old's throats in the age of twitch-em-ups is another problem altogether!

    Eep! ;(

  7. There are, however, many 6-10 yr old boys, for whom cleanliness is not the prime object, and these are the ones who get the complications, and in whom the foreskin shrinks (phimosis) and is unable to be retracted to get clean underneath.

It's normal for the foreskin to be fused to the glans until puberty (physiologic phimosis) and as such there's no need to clean underneath the foreskin until the penis is fully retractable. Pathologic phimosis is uncommon in childhood and when it is there, poor hygiene does not seem to be a factor (for the above reasons).

"It has been suggested that any radical or surgical treatments for phimosis should not be done until after puberty. This has partly come about because of the reaction to the over use of circumcision as a mainstream treatment for phimosis. It has also been reported by bodies such as CIRP that significant numbers of doctors are unable to recognise normal developmental tight prepuce [physiological phimosis] and pathological phimosis. It is believed that many unnecessary circumcisions are performed because of current medical practice and misdiagnosis of phimosis. Balanitis xeroticia obliterans has been sited as one of the only causes of phimosis that should lead to a surgical circumcision."

  8. True. They should make soap that doesn't sting when it ends up in the wrong places.

Umm, they do. A lot of women use pure unscented soap to stop the same irritation, and guys can do the same!

I want my foreskin back. I think I lose feeling in my penis sometimes, and I wouldn't doubt that that's the cause of it.

It's possible, if you're extremely unlucky, I guess. But consider this quote:

"Bleustein et al study tested the sensitivity of the glans penis, and found no difference between circumcised and uncircumcised men, confirming an earlier study by Masters and Johnson. Some men who undergo foreskin restoration claim that the procedure really does improve glans sensitivy. Some have therefore argued that much of this perceived "improved sensitivity" of the glans reported by foreskin restorers is psychosexual and psychosomatic and an example of the placebo effect, with no real change in glans sensitivity."

You should talk to your doctor about it. It sounds like it might be causing you problems. It's good to know though:

Williamson and Williamson made a 1988 survey of new mothers. They found that 71% preferred a circumcised partner for sexual intercourse, and 83% for giving fellatio. When asked why, 92% responded that it stays cleaner and 90% that it looks sexier. Although 78% of the women had not had direct contact with an uncircumcised penis, those who did expressed the same preference. This study was done in an area of the United States where circumcision was the norm. Another survey (1999) of female anti-circumcision activists who had had sexual experience with both circumcised and intact partners reported an overwhelming preference (six out of seven) for the uncircumcised male as a sexual partner.

the other option, of course, is sweet sweet paedo pussy.
