  1. Argh, I got totally side-tracked: What game is Cecil designing for you LoonyBoi, and what company are you referring to?

It's SO SO SO sad to hear that Revolution has been reduced to one man genius working in his bedroom. The games industry is so shitty!

I guess BASS 2 is not happening then? Damn.

  2. Designer-created, player-controlled protagonist- to seperate adventure games from RPGs, where the protagonist is also player-created.

So if the player was allowed to say, change how Manny Calavera looked, Grim Fandango would no longer be an adventure game?! Seems like you were trying to retrofit your description to fit all adventure games at that point without actually trying to define was an adventure game IS.

I've said it for quite a while now, but I still maintain that Knights of the Old Republic is a perfect example of the next logical progression of the adventure game. Of course there were RPG/player management elements in that game, but none of them overwhelmed the exploration/narrative/puzzle-solving/character interaction aspects, in fact they were really simple and required very little thought.

At the same time it added threat, danger and excitement to the usual mix of adventure game elements.

  3. Yeah, as a huge Alan Moore fan I was reluctant to like it... but I actually did! The good parts definitely outweighed the needless cheesy moments ("My life changed the moment I saw you", that kind of crap). A fan-edit might actually improve it by cutting out some of the awful dialogue, so then it'd be perfect! (Maybe :)).

  4. The new Pirates sucked! I completed the whole damned thing 100%, everything, on the second hardest level (the hardest level is the "joke" hard level from the first game, apparently, which some people liked) on my FIRST GO! (Yes, my first ever go! Everything! Every hidden treasure, every pirate killed, every family member saved. Everything!)

There was ZERO challenge to that game, just repetitive (and stupidly easy) sub-games interspersed with mind-numbing boring sailing - "Ooh, I need to be on the other side of the Carribean - again. And the wind is against me - again."

The atmosphere was brilliant, though, and it looked beautiful. It was more of a "fun" no-brainer game (with, like I said, zero challenge) and if the sailing parts weren't so goddamn s..........l...........o.............w........... then I'd probably play it again when I wanted to chill a bit.

The ingenius thing about Civ is that there's always something to do. Just when you've done that one thing, then you need to do that, and oh, this too and then this needs doing... and it's just endless little tasks and they're all fun and not boring or repetitive. This is what Pirates missed. There was nothing to do at 90% of the Ports you visited, and you ended up just chasing one particular baddie around the map in ...slow motion..., with not much else to do. If you did stop to try and do anything else then the baddie you were pursuing with soon be on the other side of the map again!

Sorry, been wanting to say all that for ages! :)

  5. I remembered some!

Mario 64  (never played it before - great stuff!)

Psychonauts  (everyone should play this!)

    Fable: TLC

Out from Boneville  (captures Bone perfectly!)

Team Fortress Classic & Counter Strike :tmeh: (it ain't what it used to be!)

Freelancer :tmeh: (I enjoyed it, but I haven't bothered to complete it)

GTA III :tmeh: (haven't got the patience - might give it a proper go one day)

King Kong :tmeh: (nice, but it hasn't drawn me in with its basic gameplay -- also the voice acting is crap considering it's the real actors!)

Singles   (girlfriend wanted to try it -- it's SHIT!)

  6. Games don't excite me the way they used to. I think we're definitely heading for a 'crash' of sorts, but that can only be good for the industry. At the moment the games industry rips off it's players and relies on sequels far too much, it's kind of like the movie studio 'factory system' they had in the 40s. Some bright sparks escape, but mostly it's dull dull dull.

How companies can insist on charging so much for a games is also in need of updating. I can buy a multi-million dollar film on DVD for £20 (if that!), but if I want to buy a multi-million dollar game it costs £40-50. It's arguable that I'd get more enjoyment from the game (if it doesn't suck) than the film, but the game cost LESS to make than the movie, so why does it cost more?!

I think the gaming industry is digging its own grave at the moment, but it will all sort itself out in the end.

  7. Having gotten bored almost immediately with the first GTA and skipping the second, I've only just bought GTA III. I would have picked up Vice City, but I'd heard San Andreas was a million times better.

From what I've seen of it, GTA III is good fun, with an excellent sense of humour. Is Vice City really the best one of the series?!

  8. This is the best Playstation to PC adaptor I've seen. Works perfectly on XP, supports two players, both with full vibration support. It's a cinch to install and it's never messed up on me (unlike other adaptors I've used). Plus, it's only £6.99 delivered!

    http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=PC&title=114167

It's fantastic. (The PlayStation controller is approximately 1000 times better than any PC controller I've ever used.) Not sure if they ship it to the US, though.

  9. Psychonauts: 90's Adventure game + 90's platforming + wit and ingenutiy = 90's Gameplay

The adventure elements were basic: Talk to the guy who runs the class in the demo and he'll tell you to take your time exploring the camp, suggesting you get a good look around. Go back and he'll repeat the same message. Go back again and say you want to join the class and he'll yell at you for being late.

You really don't expect this sort of gigantic flaw affecting a game's atmosphere in this day and age (see it in the demo to get what I mean).

The actual gameplay revolves around a linear 3D map and collecting items. Mario 64 had more advanced gameplay

Psychonauts had a lot going for it, but you really have to love LucasArt's adventure games to get the most out of it. It doesn't really cross-over to the average gamer; the plot actually makes it sound like a children's game! Such a shame, but KOTOR is still the only truly successful blend of adventure/RPG/action elements for me.

  10. Hello! My girlfriend wants me to find an old game that she used to play as a kid, but she doesn't know much about it and it sounds pretty obscure to me (maybe not?). If anyone can name this game I'd be very grateful!

Apparently, you play a wizard, and from what I can gather, it's a sort of top-downy mazey type thing. Also, it plays 'Greensleeves' when you play the game.

She's unsure of the system, but it was probably on the Amstrad CPC or (possibly) the Amiga 500.

A test to your gaming knowledge!

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks alot!

    - Johnny

  11. Ideally anything (DVDs, CDs, movie tickets etc) should sell the most amount in the first month/week of it's release. This helps the product's profile tremendously as people who have never heard of it will become aware of it. It's a shame it sounds like Majesco botched the game's release(?). I'd still like to know how it sells on the X-Box charts, though! When should we see them?
