  1. Yes, it appears to be true this time!

    http://www.gotfuturama.com/

Here it is, on frickin' Reuters no less, if you don't believe me!

    http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=televisionNews&storyID=2006-06-23T033638Z_01_N22173912_RTRIDST_0_TELEVISION-FUTURAMA-DC.XML

Comedy Central has resurrected the former Fox animated series from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. At least 13 new episodes will be produced -- the first since the series' original run from 1999-2003.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with 20th Century Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing "Futurama" library of 72 episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

"We are thrilled that Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox Television have decided to produce new episodes of 'Futurama' and that Comedy Central will be the first to air them," said David Bernath, senior vice president for programming at the network.

"There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience, and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library but something they've never seen as well."

"Futurama" isn't the first series to return to air after cancellation. The Fox animated series "Family Guy" returned to the network last year after getting a second wind on DVD and late-night cable.

    Crikey!

    :zoid:

  2. You know, I actually, for a smidgen of a second, believed there might be something of worth in this thread. Instead it's filled with a bunch of school children.

If this was post 9/11 would you all be making the same stupid comments, or is it just because it's occuring in a non-English speaking nation that you don't care?

  3. Colour me really forgetful then - I went back to MI2 last year after a break of god-knows-how-long and could only remember the outline of the story and barely a quarter of the puzzles. I think I'm much more fluent on MI1 though, since I've replayed that one a lot more over the years.

I think it comes down to how "ingrained" the game is in your memory. If you played it over and over (and over) like I did, then it's a lot harder to forget. In fact it might be impossible without an unfortunate blow to the head.

I know SMI so well I could probably recite most of it from heart, even though I haven't played through a MI game in years. I've not played MI2 in a long long time though, but there was a time where I'd happily sit and play through the entire game in one go. CMI is great fun when you can't remember how to solve the puzzles, which is great because I've only played it all the way through a few times, so I don't remember everything.

I just replayed SMI and MI2 for the first time in, I don't really know, maybe four years. Previously I'd always thought that SMI was better, but I think I've finally come to see the light. LeChuck's Revenge really is the superior game. I still miss the insult sword fighting though.

Really? I too, believe that SMI is a better game, but I haven't played through MI2 in quite a while... Is it really a better game? I really enjoy SMI's "completeness" (it feels like a more cohesive story) and its sincerity. I think MI2 was a little bit too cynical for its own good... (it seems to reflect a team that's been pushed up against it because of the success of their previous game). But I haven't played it in a long time, maybe I'm wrong!

  4. While I think the presentation was pretty nice (I really dig the look), it's certainly not enough to make me buy, or even enjoy, a game. I'm long past being impressed by graphics... I think! At least I can't remember recently forcing myself to play an average game because it looked good (Another World when I was younger, yes, and probably plenty others too!)

The fact that it has 'old skool' gameplay doesn't entice me one bit, either. What's the point? I still pick up and play 'old skool' games for next to nothing, so it seems pointless to 'redo' an old style of game with little or no innovation. I still play Manic Miner from time to time, but that doesn't mean I was to spend £20 on playing a revamp with slightly better graphics.

Saying all that, though, I think SiN may have hit the nail squarely on the head. Thanks for that, SiN! I think you pointed out all of the possible addictive and interesting aspects of the game that were probably not immediately apparent from the demo (especially to someone who believed the hype - doh!). I appreciate that this game is perhaps a little deeper, a bit more involving and perhaps better crafted than I first noticed. In fact, I'm quite interested in playing it now...!

I DID pick up on something while I played the first time, and it was the only interesting thing from the demo, but the whole idea and, yes, presentation was pretty neat. What I'm talking about is the idea of a unique computer simulation "living" in your machine. It's a tad "Little Computer People" or whatever, but it was quite nicely done. If I wasn't so let down with its apparently generic gameplay I might have taken more notice.

With my expectations adjusted accordingly I think I might take a peek at this 'old skool', but (apparently) expertly crafted, game.

Thanks for that, SiN, Miffy495 and DoReMi!

I hate hype so much, but there's times when you can't ignore it, and somehow Darwinia's got to me. It's funny because if I'd found Darwinia of my own accord, I probably would have been enamored with this uniquely presented little indie game, instead of being let down with the gameplay! Damned PC magazines!

  5. Thanks for the info, glad it's not just me. I hate hype.

Hype aside, the fact remains that it's an indie/budget title and thus doesn't have the production values of your average C&C. If that's what you were hoping for, well, too bad I guess.

How could you have possibly gleaned that I was let down by it's production values?!?

  6. I finally got around to downloading the demo of the venerated game Darwinia. I've so many things about it "re-inventing core gameplay", taking gaming back to its source with a brilliant blend of creativity and intelligence.

So installed and was ready to experience something new....... only to discover it's just C&C with fake "retro" graphics!!!

Did I miss something here?! I thought this was the gaming moment of the millennium! I hate PC magazines!

  7. I think if any major developer (besides EA) made Table Tennis it still would have been somewhat "shocking". The reason for this is that game developers don't tend to make small little "fun" games anymore. It's got very little to do with diversity, really.

not only are “Rockstar” as a whole not only known for violent games

I'm sorry, did I miss something? They're ARE known for violent games, wasn't this the initial reason for this bloggers post?! That people generally associate them with their 'violent'/criminal based (ie. generally more sucessful) games??

Gee, let's examine the evidence: They have seven (count 'em!) GTA games, Manhunt, The Warriors, State of Emergency, Max Payne (I and II) and er, Midnight Club. The rest of their stuff isn't as well known... so YES, they ARE known for their violent/criminal games. Heck, even in their other racing games (The Italian Job and Smuggler's Run) you play criminals!

  8. I'm surprised at the complaints about the architecture...what more do you people want? Cheydinhal looks different from Chorral which looks different from Leyawin which looks different from Bruma which looks different from Anvil and so on.

I agree, the architecture is pretty damned good, it's the people that let it down. (How long does it take to make someone who looks remotely human on the character generation screen?! :)) That, and the mid-sentence accent/voice changes.

Still, it's nothing that ruins the game.

  9. Credentials...

We need to keep the name of the studio confidential. As you are bidding on a development team this won't pose a problem. Games that have been developed by members of the team include: Dungeons and Dragons, DarkStalkers, Army Men: Sarges Heroes, Battletanx, The Red Baron, Tribes 2 and many more.

They don't seem that great to me... but I've never played these games so maybe I shouldn't judge!

  10. I still love the game, but keep in mind that it has flaws, some of which are more severe than they should be. Let's say quality voice acting and dialog are two of the most important aspects of a game to you; then you might sway towards Dreamfall instead. However, if a very high level of freedom is what you need then it's needless to say which game you will want to go for (hint: it's Oblivion). If I had the money I'd get both.

Yep: The voice acting SUCKS! Character's voices often change mid-conversation! Plus: Everyone's ugly in Oblivion! I mean REALLY ugly.

  11. Sorry, I DID mean "Heart of the Alien", but what I recall is that Chahi wasn't all that involved with it and wasn't a fan of what they did with Another World. I'll try and find a reference.

I remember being put off by the change in graphics though, the lack of vectors made everything seem sluggish and not as smooth in comparison with Another World.

    Found a reference:

E-BOREDOM: Did you originally have a sequel in mind when creating Out of This World?

ERIC CHAHI: Not at all. This sequel was decided from the pressure of Interplay. I never had the initiative to do a sequel. So instead of a real sequel, I thought it would be much more interesting to replay the game from the alien's point of view.

E-BOREDOM:Heart of the Alien has a very controversial ending, causing some fans on the Internet to be in an uproar. Was the ending always intended to be so bittersweet?

ERIC CHAHI: Well I prefer the ending of the first game. I wanted it to be uncertain regarding the hero destiny, is he alive ? Heart of the Alien lifted the veil too much. Personally, I'm not happy with the sequel. Hopefully, this has been released only on Sega CD.

I guess that's what I was thinking of.

  12. I just realized that when you look out the window in the tower towards the beginning of the game you see the bird creature <snip>

Well spotted! I've never noticed that before!! I thought it was a flag or something.

One thing that's a shame about this new version: The menus you have to navigate before you're allowed to play! The original game just "started". You were "there", and it kind of took you by surprise (back in the early 90's anyway).

Something else I've just realised: Nearly ALL the graphics were vector... including 99% of the backgrounds!!! WOW! Pretty impressive! (Just play it in HIRES without "enhanced backgrounds" turned on to see for yourself.) Oddly, even in this new version, FSAA doesn't seem work at all :(

As a side note: Heart of Darkness (the SegaCD only "sequel") was not designed by Eric Chahi and did not feature vector graphics... as it took too long to make them. I haven't played it, but I hear it's exceptionally difficult.

I've just remembered: One of Idle Thumb's first ever articles was a review of Another World, too: http://www.idlethumbs.net/display.php?id=13 Some valid comments!

  13. UGH!

That's my reaction to playing this new version. The sound is HORRIBLE worse than the Amiga version for no good reason (although the music is great). There's still the same embarassingly bad animation (walking 'into' and 'out of' the camera, drinking the cola etc.), the same bizarre "real world" that looks even more out of place in hires because you can see how odd it really looks.

It still has the same pointless gameplay (kicking worms), backwards 'trial and error' game design (if you go left and swing on the vine then you can't complete the level = death and try again). Really it's just a bunch of sub-games with amusing deaths thrown in. In fact, it's often more fun to see the 'death animations' than to play the game. (The 'death by worm' one is still brilliant.) What's left is a slightly more interactive Dragon's Lair, with a better atmosphere.

What's really shocking is how this perfect 'hi-res' presentation (you couldn't ask for more) reveals the lacklustre game within!

    :oldman:

Of course, the plus side is that you get all this new artwork for a mere 7 euros / $8.50 USD / £4.85 GBP, which is still WELL worth the money. (As soon as they accept PayPal I'll be getting my copy!)

  14. Holy cow, I can't believe someone actually did this! For all the games I'd love to see remade in hires (The Secret of Monkey Island for one), I'd have never have picked this one... don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see it and will DEFINITELY be buying it, but it's mainly for nostalgia reasons than anything else.

So, why did they do this? Was it cheap to "remake"? Could we be seeing more classic games remade in such high quality? clickBOOM were busy remaking old Cinemaware titles, but I've never actually seen one nor know of anyone being interested in playing them (except me).

Another World wasn't renound for its lastability back in 1991, and was mainly seen as an incredible exercise in graphics and sheer inventiveness. The brilliant and clever opening of the game (telling a story with practically no cut-scenes -- and they said Half-Life was revolutionary!) gave way to repetitive and annoying gameplay later on (I'm thinking particuarly of those damned annoying caves!). While Half-Life had excellent gameplay anyway, Another World was actually kind of empty in terms of playability (although it was still a beautiful experience overall).

It's going to be really interesting to see what 'modern' gamers make of this.

Is it still beautiful? (The story is, I imagine.) Is it still revolutionary? Can style still outweigh substance?

    Time will tell!
