  1. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Edit: Tone is a very hard thing to convey on the internet, so let me just say, the following should be read in a very genial voice. Like a your grandpa. Ok, quick poll: Hands up who's taken the time to actually read the sources on the infographic. You know, the ones that are being bashed so fiercely? Well, anyone? No? That's actually the only point I've ever made. I've never defended the infographic beyond saying that I've read more serious and balanced articles from more reasonable sources saying similar things... I don't know where the idea that I want to marry this infographic came from. I also posted a video of a woman completely failing to do the high jump. I don't wish to have to defend either of them. If anything, I posted this article might generate some usual Thumbs Intelligent Observations™. Something along the lines of, "actually other studies have shown no change in brain behaviour" or, "I've heard this before, but the people doing these studies admit there's too little data" or even, "cripes, that's a bit scary -- I looked into it a bit more and found further articles on it...". Unfortunately the critical discussion mostly seems to be about superficial things like presentation and execution, or trying to discredit the sources based on association, or trying to unfavourably compare it to fearmongering from the past. I.e. Not about taking apart the points it raises. I'm kind of surprised nobody has pointed out the most obvious flaw of all: One of the URLs of the sources directly contradicts a claim in the infographic itself. You don't even need to visit the page to see that. Yes, I agree, that's pretty shocking. Yet I noticed this before I posted the infographic, and I still decided to post it. Why? Well, I've already explained that above...

Do you mind?! This is the Comical Picture Thre-- Oh, wait. Carry on.
  3. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Well... I was kind of pointing out the fact that you were openly basing your opinions on no data whatsoever. Also, instead of people complaining about the way the information was presented, why not challenge yourselves to find fault with the following article: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/05/ff_nicholas_carr/all/1
  4. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Not that I care all that much, but isn't your post the very thing you're decrying? Reactionary, sensationalist, poorly researched... The Wired article I linked to is worth reading through to the end, if nothing else.

Yes, but none of you told me!
  7. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Attention what? Sorry, I phased out.
  8. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Haha, good point, but I wouldn't have posted it if I hadn't read similar things in more reliable places, and so felt pretty confident in its message. (In fact, I've had a blog post about it rattling about in my brain for months.) So, this is for you and subbes: http://bit.ly/afEJ5g Happy Holidays!
  9. General Video Game Deals Thread

Hush, you... Games I still want include Limbo, Bastion, and Blocks That Matter. Bring it on...

Say hello to my little friend
  12. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

All of the above is true, but I still found it funny. Does that make me a bad person?
  13. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Ah, so you're enjoying The Wire, I see?

It's back... for a short time only. wCyUN4-_yrQ
  15. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

Damn. It was rather excellent, and sadly the show it mocks keeps blocking it. If it pops up again, I'll link it.
  16. Goty.cx 2011

Nicely done, Rodi! That was an enjoyable little read One thing I can say for sure, on my quest to discover my own GOTY2011, is that LA Noire was easily the biggest gaming disappointment of the year for me.
  17. Life

My problem is that I sit at home and fap all day. What should *I* do?

  19. V The Elder Scrolls

Nope. My entire experience of TES is coming out of that long-winded tutorial section, finding a boring dungeon, and wandering around a boring city, having the same conversations with lots of random NPCs. Actually I did play it long enough to open the first portal thing and wander into the "Oblivion" world... which, despite supposedly being hell(like), was also really, really boring. All this talk is making more intrigued about giving Skyrim a go to see if I have a better experience.
  20. V The Elder Scrolls

Interesting... You mean there's supernatural stuff in the world? As Orv said, I found the world of Oblivion (what little I saw of it) to be not much more than British people in armour.
  21. Goty.cx 2011

Now you've really made me want to play Bastion.
  22. V The Elder Scrolls

That's good to know, thanks for explaining all that My overriding feeling when reading the history booklet that came with Oblivion was boredom. I seem to recall it was the worst type of fantasy, but maybe it was designed to be appreciated by those already completely familiar with the games' lore. I've never gotten past walking around the first big city I came to in Oblivion, so am completely ignorant of any and all history of the series in general. (I liked Fallout 3, though.)
  23. V The Elder Scrolls

Man. No offence to any Elder Scrolls fans, but seeing this list really reminds me that I hate their universe. It just seems so bland. Maybe you have to play it for a long time before it becomes more compelling, but I remember reading the booklet that came with Oblivion, with all the history of the world in it, and it was SO dull and uninteresting that I couldn't take any of it in.
  24. Plug your shit

Congrats, dude! I hope it all works out... Nice artwork, too. One thing, though. I gotta say: Your HTML is a bit... gruesome. Whenever I see HTML like that on otherwise cool sites, I always wonder how it came about. (Kind of interested on a professional level.) Care to explain? I always find it difficult convincing people to use good HTML on their site... much to my chagrin.

Yep, at least you have a love life!
