I don't listen to the podcast (I joined long before there was a podcast! ), so I'm pretty out the loop, and I skim read this thread. Super Meat Boy seems like the perfect comparison, though. Not sure why I'm not getting any music. Getting all the sound-effects, just not the music. What control system are you all using? Mouse/KB or 360 Controller? Can't say that either of them particularly clicked, but I'm leaning towards the controller.

So I finally thought I'd give this go... I'm a little underwhelmed. It crashed the first two times I tried to play it (and later, when I eventually quit). The style and tone is undeniably awesome, don't get me wrong -- but! I was expecting I'd be able to sneak up behind someone and play the game stealthily, but as soon as you get close they apparently "sense" you. It's far more twitch based than I imagined it would be. Also, where was the awesome soundtrack? There was no music at all for me. Does it kick in later in the game or something? Overall: Hmm!

Intriguing: In addition, Peter Molyneux suggests there may be more to the game than it would seem: "There is something we haven't told everybody about when you play the cube. When you play the cube you're also doing something else. You don't realize you're doing it. [...] You're not just doing things in the cube. You don't realize it but you're doing something in something else as well at the same time." Wasting time? Spending money? Making Molyneux laugh? What?

I don't know, but I'm guessing that there's some deeper connection with the game that's more than just being a fan. Great design, though!

Really? Should be working. Anything now?

I always thought they were pretty tame compared to PC Gamer. Apparently not! I wish I could find that review. (Or was it PC Zone...? Hmm.)- 44 replies

That's a very good point. I don't think I've ever realised that before, although it seems very obvious now that you point it out. I wish I could find the original reviews from the time. The closest I could find was this from EDGE. The review opens: And concludes: With reviews like that, is it any wonder my expectations were through the roof? Edit: All I could find of PC Gamer's review was this: This is The Big One, and it's even better than we could've hoped.- 44 replies

If this was an Xmas present or a Birthday thing, then this would definitely be the best solution. Seeing how this money is meant for her baby, then I think you have to bite the bullet. Try to look at it this way: The money is going to improve a child's life... who has HER as a mother! It's charity, really.

Strangely, as much as I loved BioShock, the only person I know who LOVES that game is a girl, too. Check out her tat!

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook. I took it and put it on YouTube... WOW! Every street performer in London needs to seriously up their game. (Why aren't more people paying attention to this guy? He's a one man Cirque du Soleil) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f40NKGRWn_g -

It's not "frat boys", it's the mainstream gamer they're after. People like us are going to play Bioshock Infinite because we were fans of System Shock and Bioshock -- the cover doesn't matter. To the majority of gamers who are unaware of these games, it's important that the cover appeal to them. (I don't see what's so difficult to understand about this!)

Absolutely! The closest I've ever come to being able to appreciate that game is when you told me it was made by an untested team - a real underdog story. Instead, when I first played it, I came from PC Gamer's angle that it was "the most interactive FPS ever, with an incredible storyline!". (It's hard to consider Half-Life's story as "incredible" when you've grown knowing LucasArts games.) I digress!- 44 replies

I don't think it's possible to fully appreciate most art without knowing the context in which it was created. Does that diminish the author's achievements? Does it mean it doesn't deserve to be well regarded? Not in my opinion. It's interesting because, in a wider sense, I guess there's two ways to react to "everyone else likes this but me": One is, "everyone else is wrong"! The other (and where I tend to fall) is, "How can I learn to appreciate what everyone else is appreciating about it?". To me, "good taste" is not just about having an opinion on something, it's about having a sophisticated palate.- 44 replies

I've paused Clash of Kings for for AKIRA, the Japanese manga. It's absolutely mind blowing that one person did all this work. I'm on volume five now and it's very good. I do wonder about the quality of the translation, though. There's a huge chase sequence in book three among characters that still haven't been fully explained to the reader. It's hard to get emotionally involved if all you know about a person in a chase is their name :-/

	That's a good start. Yeesh!
 -
	Yikes. That explains a lot!

Argh. I wrote a whole missive about how you've missed the point in both cases, isolating them from the time of their creation, but Chrome crashed, and I can't be bothered to type it all again. Bottom line, both were revolutionary for their time. You can't take a piece of art out of its context and expect to be able to fully appreciate it. (On the Road was about the feeling that society didn't have a place for you -- something that was felt by lot of people in the post wars years: They didn't want the white picket fence dream, and neither did the generation that followed (see the sixties)),- 44 replies

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt Mr Mington missed the point. (Tangent: "Mr Mington Misses the Point" sounds like the title of a kids' book.)
