New "old-school" LucasArts game announced tomorrow

That's not true, some of them produce pretty damn cool results (depending on the game). -
Grand Thumb Auto XXXIII: Starting to See Why Roman Numerals Has Been Phased Out...
ThunderPeel2001 replied to toblix's topic in Multiplayer Networking
Haha! Amazing to see this is still going... Are we really on 33??? Wow. Shame my XBox is at my ex's gathering dust. I will have access to it again eventually. Then I shall be down like a clown. Or something. -
Man, you are SO screwed. If I were them, I'd be sooo mad with you... (Now, where's Ossk to come in and tell you how to fix it?)
-
Wow, that's the power of voice acting for you! I had no idea! Makes me want to play it again...
-
What?! So your point was Mass Effect was "groundbreaking" (meaning "especially innovative") in the area of character development. I point out a list of games that came out before it with similar attributes... and you complain the list is too short? Man, the internet can really get you down sometimes.

Awesome! -
Jake... where is it???

Planescape: Torment? Fable? Jade Empire? Knights of the Old Republic? Knights of the Old Republic II? *shrugs* You also enjoy these games (they're very good!).

It's bizarre, because they didn't leave it ambiguous at all. It might have been interesting if they did, but they didn't! "Chuckie" looks at the CAMERA. Not to Guybrush. Guybrush doesn't even see it. It's a message to us! Same goes for Elaine. There is no way around this unless you want to start questioning EVERYTHING. Seriously. Was the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark "ambiguous"? Maybe Marion and Indy died when they opened the Ark... and the other movies are just dreams? Yeah, I love how they left it "ambiguous". Was the ending of The Usual Suspects "ambiguous"? Yeah, I love how they left it open so that ANYBODY could have been Keyser Soze. I like to think it was the police detective interviewing Kevin Spacey. Well, the film didn't say it WASN'T him! They left it ambiguous! Seriously. You can't say something is ambiguous unless you're given a reason to question something... There's NO reason to think that Guybrush is "imagining" Elaine. There's no reason to believe that Guybrush is "imagining" Chuckie turning into LeChuck behind his back. If you decide to question everything you could end up anywhere!

*Lets loose a feral scream* We're talking about the language of narrative. Pretty basic stuff. If someone suddenly awakens and realises what they've just experienced was a hallucination, then fair enough. But if we THEN see the former baddie in this "new world" look at the camera and let us know that he's still the same baddie... and THEN cut to someone who was supposedly in the original "hallucination", apparently alive and well and NOT made up... Then YES, it IS the game saying that!

New "old-school" LucasArts game announced tomorrow

The fact that they held off the "bigger" titles is probably so they can do an SE if Monkey Island: SE sells well. (Incidentally, it's due out on the 15th!) Also, I defend Ossk and his batshit insane rantings... for those who of us who already own the games it's a bit shit. But still, it'd be nice if they WEREN'T just DosBoxed/ScummVM versions, but actually 100% compatible ones. I don't know why, but it would. -

No, it isn't. That award either goes to Monkey Island 1, Day of the Tentacle or Grim Fandango. Heck, even Curse of Monkey Island beats it... and I LOVE Fate of Atlantis. For anyone who's interested, here's The Complete Game Guides for when you get stuck. God, I really need to update that site. -
I can travel through time! Only forwards, though. To prove it I'll meet you here in two weeks... Of course, for you, it will take two weeks to get there, but you'll see! I'll be there... waiting!

Jeez. No need to gloat.

You know what I mean... Side-quests involving random characters that go nothing towards solving the massive mystery that's been presented before you. Like a Lost episode about Jack's tattoo.
-
You know you can't forget that MI1 and MI2 (I get the feeling moreso with MI2) were co-written with Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman... and probably lots of other people. I'm sure Ron is great, but Schafer and Grossman have shown themselves to be rather excellent at what they do, too... So it wasn't ALL Gilbert, as convenient as it might be to think that it was.
-
I disagree! (Just kidding)

Aaaah. I think I may have to re-adjust my expectations in order to fully enjoy it, then. Although, like you say, the details are pretty awesome, and the world itself is inspired, and the characters are interesting and well defined...... I was expecting more. Which is pretty ridiculous when I read this back to myself. I was also hoping that the story would really hook me in, but MAN, there are millions of little side-quests standing in the way of plot progression... Maybe it's because I'm trying to do them all before allowing myself to move on -- but isn't that how you play RPGs?? I've been at it for hours and hours and I've only just met Pharod, now... and he then immediately sets me a massive quest before he'll give me any more information. *sigh*

But as soon as Guybrush falls Big Whoop is opened and the Curse begins... Anything after that moment is part of that curse. Besides, you said "the game" was culminating towards that sequence. What else is there? Yeah, I have to agree here. Unless Ron was planning on trying some sort of clever "is it real?, is it fantasy?" struggle for Guybrush, but really we'd end up back in CMI at some point.
-
Whaaaat? The game clearly states, as canon, that it's a CURSE. Sure, it might have been a cheap "get out" clause so that they could have their "imagination ending" without killing any sequels, but it's still clearly canon. Damn, I wish Ron or Dave or Tim would just clear this up for once and for all... it's been a LONG time. I have to say, for all the game's surreal elements (the bone song, etc.), I can't agree that the game was "clearly set up to culminate in this reveal". Anachronisms are easy comedy fodder, so I don't take them as "evidence". I mean SOMI, CMI and EMI all contain anachronisms, but that doesn't mean everyone playing those games is suddenly thinking... "wait, is this all fake?!". They sit nicely within the game world. I'm sure there must be other evidence, though. What else is there?

I've been twice. It was a great experience!

Check out this awesome podcast! Radio Spiritworld (Inter-dimensional) There's one episode so far, so you get in before you feel overwhelmed with episodes. It's hilarious. It's made by Robert Popper (aka Robin Cooper from Timewaster's Letters) and Peter Serafinowicz. Subscribe through your respective audio device here: http://rsw.cc/feed/ (I also still wholeheartedly endorse The Hollywood Saloon -- movie podcast.)

You seem to be a bit confused. That may have been their original intention, but that's NOT what they released. The "pirate lingo" thing wasn't a hint at some big conspiracy, it was just breaking the fourth wall for a little joke (and explanation for the younger player). Your quote from Bill Tiller confirms this, too: "And that magical lightning coming out of Chucky's eyes and Elaine waiting by the hole on Dinky Island (which sounds a lot like Disney Land) was put there just in case there was to be a Monkey Island 3." Well we all know that Ron claims to have wanted to do HIS version of MI3, so according to Tiller, Ron put this stuff in so he COULD do an MI3 -- ie. This was his explanation for what was going on: It's a LeChuck curse...
