  1. New Year's Resolutions are Fucking Bull Shit

The lamest thing about this title's thread is that's it's an attempt at being cynical in order to sound cool... I hate that. (Sorry, Toblix.) Bullshit, I say, to negativity... (which is pretty much what Toblix actually said ) For my own resolutions, I think the main thing I need (in my life) is to feel I'm being more creative. I'm getting older and I can't keep waiting for someone else to come along and "help" me realise my creative potential (whatever that may actually be, good or bad), so I need to a bit more proactive and start making things happen myself. As a result, I think I'll be very upset with myself if I've not attempted one really difficult/scary thing in my life by the end of the year. Here's hoping. In terms of games/entertainment, I have one ethos I hope to embrace from now on (in a note I wrote that I recently discovered): Life is too short to re-play games, re-read books, re-watch movies... Push forward, embrace the unknown, try the things you think you'll hate. Love change. This thinking was inspired by the fact that there's so much "classic" stuff that I still haven't read/watched/played, and there's only a finite amount of time left to appreciate them... I'm getting older. It was also inspired by me putting every IMDB Top 250 movie that I've not watched onto my LoveFilm rental list -- and, even though it may take me many weeks to finally get around to watching an old black and white foreign movie that would otherwise not have interested me in the slightest, I've found myself loving every single one so far. Some have become favourite movies, some were just profoundly good. So yes, damnit, I'm going to keep trying to chase new experiences. Onward ho! No time to look back!
  2. New people: Read this, say hi.

Yeah, things have definitely changed since that guide was written... I guess we're all a bit "maturer" now... or something? Still, it's good to keep the guide handy, to scare the newbs.
  3. Braid

You can never go further left than the last one you've killed... so try to work from left to right moving less and less left. Hope that helps! I was stuck on it myself until my housemate just looked over my shoulder and told me how to do it in 2 secs... I would have gotten it!
  4. Braid

Don't read too much into it, any allegory is pretty weak, at best. There's themes, but nothing concrete.
  5. Black Friday Deals

    Street Fighter IV - £7.49!
  6. Christmas Haul

Weren't they already translated for when they were broadcast in the UK?
  7. Braid

    Good plan
  8. Black Friday Deals

Quite enjoyed Max Payne 1... although never played 2. Any good?
  9. Beatles: Rock Band

I got really lucky. It's nice when things like this happen - woo! It arrived today and it's damned nice. Time to take it for a test drive, me thinks.
  10. Old Games That Hold Up...Or Don't

Yep, and ironically Syndicate still looks pretty neat. I guess Wars came from that period when 3D was hip, but still in its infancy.
  11. Christmas Haul

    Surely you mean Korea?
  12. Black Friday Deals

Who was actually called Thunder Hawk, apparently.
  13. ファイナルファンタジーXIII

Hey, yeah! I ordered one... where did it go?
  14. New PC: suggest me awesome games!

Plants v Zombies is the best PC game I've played in a while... may not exactly "tax" your new computer, though Ghostbusters? (Cheap on Steam.)
  15. Christmas Haul

You should have come over to our side... It's where the cool kids are.
  16. Beatles: Rock Band

Holy crap! It's gone! They don't even sell the Gretsch or the Rickenbacker anymore... I got really lucky! Plus, the Rickenbacker was actually out of stock when I asked for advice, so if I hadn't have ordered the Gretsch when I did, I probably never would have gotten it. Awesome awesome awesome! Great advice, Miffy! Can't believe I got a new Beatles controller for only £30GBP ($48) inc. shipping! Best present ever!
  17. Movie/TV recommendations

I only meant in terms of box office. I think his last two movies were flops?
  18. Black Friday Deals

Must have missed that! Still, aside from that, the opening was very unique and original... then I bought the game and it became Edit: His name was NOT Tommy Hawk, you liar! It was Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi. What game were you playing?
  19. Black Friday Deals

That was the only interesting aspect of the game, if you ask me. Sadly it turned pretty cheesy after the awesome opening sequence and then became just an average shooter. (Certainly not a terrible game, though.)
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

Something else just leapt to mind: Being a courtroom drama, it's incredibly dialogue heavy, but it's also very good: Judgement at Nuremberg
  21. Movie/TV recommendations

Thoroughly (and surprisingly) enjoyed Sherlock Holmes. It may not herald a new era of cinema, but it certainly shows a u-turn for Guy Ritchie's career (looks like you may have dumped him too soon, Madge). Despite being a CGI tastic action movie, I'm shocked to say that it captured the spirit of the original stories really well. Bring on the sequels (I can't believe I'm saying that). Oh, and make sure there's no more of the "explain everything" Holmes -- Downey's version just came across as unlikeably smug.
  22. Braid

I found them pretty enjoyable to get (apart from the one you've got to wait around for -- although even that wasn't too annoying, just wait on that level for ages, rewind it so the cloud is reachable and then keep pressing a button on your controller while you watch a TV show). They range from easy to hardcore, but they capture the theme of obsessiveness that runs through the game very well. Getting them does change the ending... slightly. I could probably give you (Moosferatu) a save with them all in, I think. Also good fun is the time challenge -- you have to solve puzzles in different ways to complete the game so quickly, which is another set of puzzles in itself.
  23. Movie/TV recommendations

(Dons film student cap) Tarantino is particularly renown for his "badinage", but personally I think his best dialogue is found in Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. They're also probably his two best movies. Which ones have you seen of his? As for other dialogue-heavy movies, things that leap to mind are: Billy Wilder movies (Sunset Blvd, Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, etc.), Woody Allen movies (Annie Hall, Manhattan, etc.), Glengarry Glen Ross, Network and even more recently, the Coen Bros., have quite a way with words sometimes. There's some amazing gems of movies amongst those links...
  24. Christmas Haul

Small, but perfectly formed, Xmas haul this year... Michael Palin's Diaries (vol 2) A gigantic box of quality chocolates After Hours (Scorcese classic) on DVD plus, with the money I got, I bought myself... Woody Allen boxset DVD Rock Band Gretsch Guitar Dollhouse Season 1 Very nice!
