I never saw any.

Oh thank god! I thought it was pretty awful, but I have friends who are massive Dylan fans, and so I feel a bit touchy around him. All I could think while I was listening to it was, "well, this is a b-side". Lol. Good impersonation, I think.

Roger Ebert rehashes old debate even indie hipsters are tired of

I guess that's where we disagree. I know when something is profound (to me), and when it's not. When something (as Ebert puts it) is making me more "cultured, civilized and empathetic". Likewise, something can be extraordinarily well crafted, but it doesn't necessarily inspire the divine. So there are definitely a clear division for me. I was thinking more on this, and the closest I've gotten to that feeling is Planescape: Torment. Some of the passages you have to read (which tell the story) are pretty profound and touching. Hmm, maybe that would qualify? -

As Alan Moore wrote: Artists use lies to reveal truths within ourselves. I don't think "reality" is necessary, as long as something is profound. As for being able to interact with something profound, I'm beginning to see E & M's point of view: You can't enter a meditative state and contemplate your life and your viewpoint, while part of your brain is active and having to make decisions... At least I can't. I love this idea. I think it could make a really interesting game, as you'd have to learn and improve your skills as you continued. Also, it evokes this: -
Lol. I think not. The Selfish Gene isn't about the 50s and 60s US counter-culture revolution... it is awesome, though.

Ouch. I didn't realize she'd slaughtered Dylan. Still, the video didn't have to be a literal interpretation of the deliberately humdrum lyrics.

The idea is absurd, I agree, but I think I disagree, overall. There is such a thing as sublime art, and there is such a thing as kitsch art. So why not be able to categorize them? We may not all always agree, but I do think these definitions exist. I agree with Ebert and Moriarty that no game has reached levels of sublime art. I've not been touched by a game the way I have while I'm reading Moby Dick, or watching The Seventh Seal, or Seven Samurai. The "why" of this is what's up for debate. Moriarty's argument is that by the nature of having to make decision in order to participate in a game, you cannot ever reach the sublime -- It can only ever be entertainment. If you disagree with him, it's over that. His poor ability to define sublime art and kitsch art are irrelevant (unless you're saying that such definitions don't exist...?). For my part I know when I've been profoundly touched by art. I love Die Hard, but it did not inspire the divine in me. I love Monkey Island, but it doesn't either. I still think they're worthy and top class pieces of entertainment, and I would fight anyone who would say otherwise, but they're not sublime art. I'm not sure if I agree with Moriarty's argument that by being a participant it can never profoundly touch you. -
I'd like to see that. I'd recommend Storming Heaven by Jay Stevens. Changed my life!

I can't wait for the Literal version of this video. Also, who's the 40 year old black dude who's singing about hanging around with this teenage girl? It gets very creepy at that point!

Do dead people celebrate birthdays? If so, have a happy one.

I've read 15, including The Da Vinci code (highly enjoyable, sorry) and Harry Potter (loved it). I plan to read more. I'm irked that I've never even heard of "One Hundreds Years of Solitude" considering how big and red it is. Also, surprised that the Count of Monte Cristo isn't listed. I've not read it, but I've heard great things about it.

It seems that they don't dare, after all...

I think you're being overly defensive about kitsch art, and taking that to mean it's an insult. -
The sources are listed under the cloud. This wasn't just from a poll.

Yeah, I just found myself massively disagreeing with huge parts of it, all the while thinking, "just because something is witty, doesn't mean it's right". I also believe, as did the reviewers of the day, that Wilde subscribed to most of these opinions, and that the "moral" ending felt tacked on. I just feel I misunderstood what's supposed to be so good about it.

I think you missed the point. Nobody is saying don't play games, or games are worthless, or it's a waste of everyone's time to play games. -
Looking through the list, I've read some, I own others. One that sticks out is Dorian Grey... I really didn't like it. I didn't like the message, the humour, the attitude of it. I realise this puts me firmly into some sort of camp for philistines, but I don't know how else to take it. What did I miss?

Like it!

All hail the not-bots!

Would love to own that, but considering I seem to have hit a limit with my fake guitaring skills, I wonder if I'd have the same problem with a real guitar.... probably!
-
Ah, I see. I shall avoid that series, then! Definitely.

Ugh. What utter fucking assholes! Jesus.
