Mein Thumbcraft—IdleT Dedicated Minecraft Server

I wish there was a way to fly around so I could visit all those interesting looking objects quickly and easily. -
Must have missed this. It's funny because I think I've hit the exact point you're talking about: A chapter called Cetology. (Which is apparently followed by ones called "The Masthead", "The Forecastle", "The Captain's Table", etc.) Rodi, does Moby Dick, after laying down all this foundation, ever pick up the pace and become more gripping? I think that explains what I've been missing perfectly. Maybe I was feeling especially puritanical when I read it, but I really didn't like the message it was giving me. I felt it was using wit to try and justify and morally corrupt existence... It just kind of irked me. Maybe if I read it with a more devilish hat on I'd appreciate it more.

What happened to that awesome double-helix of lava and water? It seems to have vanished? Edit: Oh wow. I just checked out the daily build map. There's some amazing projects underway! From Zeppelins to pyramids! Very cool. -
Ah! That's kind of how I felt about Dorian Grey... . (I still would love to understand what's supposedly so good about that book. Yes, it's filled with brash witticisms that appear true if you refuse to analyse them, but aside from that...? Anyways, I digress.) Speaking of classics: Has anyone actually read Moby Dick? I've been struggling with it for months! It feels like pushing a boulder uphill. There's been amusing moments, yes, but Ahab has only just appeared and I'm 157 pages in. Another friend of mine is having a similar experience. Any thoughts? (It's not totally unpleasant, it's just hard to remain gripped.)

You mean the "beeb"?

Don't Panic! New Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Game Announced
ThunderPeel2001 replied to pabosher's topic in Video Gaming
Well I meant a good series. It's worth noting that Adams hadn't really done anything particularly brilliant in a long time (although I did enjoy A Salmon of Doubt), and that he was responsible for most of the *ugh* changes the movie made. I think some people who really *got it* could successfully reboot the series (leaving the old one intact, warts and all). There's so much gold there and it's never been mined to the level it could be. (Although, yes, maybe books should remain books, etc.) -
Yeah, I was thinking that, too. I do actually wonder if it will actually get dumber over time.

Don't Panic! New Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Game Announced

Speaking of HH, I really wish they'd make a British TV series from it (a new one). They could use the special effects from the film to keep costs down, but it's such an awesome story. The first two books would be a brilliant two season series. -
Wow. Even for a 32 colour game... that's damned ugly! I suppose everyone has already seen this? Duke Nudem (NSFW!) Edit: Interestingly, they've actually made this a lot easier than when I first played it. It's still not much fun to play, though.

Very interesting! Makes me want to read a lot of the things you've talked about. I don't understand this, though... What are "bigot stories"?
-
Happy birthday to me (and Ben).

Heh. I just stumbled across my own copy of this game the other day. I think the thing about games like this (e.g. Doom) is that they're designed to be played without a mouse. Once you get past how initially restrictive that feels, it's actually a lot of fun.

No. Funny or Die is a serious documentary site. Yes it is, as illustrated by her poor acting.

Fair enough. For me it started out like that, but then got more interesting and complicated as it went on. I actually got really caught up in the story. I thought Season 2 went too far in places, but I still loved having a character I utterly despised the one second, and felt sorry for and related to the next. An unusual mixture.
-
Interesting! I might have to check that out then. I hope LA Noire is accurate, too.

The original clip! (Sorry if you've already seen this, I just stumbled across it.) Sochd9Xqlos#at=9 Jump straight to the famous moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sochd9Xqlos&feature=player_embedded#at=9

I've never watched Lie to Me, but it isn't that like saying you know a lot about how murders are investigated from watching CSI? (Serious question, I'm just wondering.) Me too.
-
That sounds cool. I will definitely be checking this game out. The things you've mentioned indicate anxiety, not lying. Talking to a police detective is one very plausible reason for being anxious (I get anxious every time I go through airport security, even when I'm not smuggling bombs, drugs and uranium). There's no real way to judge whether someone is lying or not based on their body language, as proven by the fact that every single actor in the game... is lying.
-
The opening of the first episode, definitely a good taster for those who want to check it out... Crank it up! 6bmEv80WR0c

It's definitely requires you to acquire a taste for it, but from what you've said it seems you've only watched a few episodes? I think it's an amazing show. The only problem is that most people have probably seen McBride's schtik now. Back when he was on Conan, people thought he really was Fred Simmons: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/1b0653c31c/my-conan-apperance-from-fred-simmons
-
Yes, but do they design a game based on the average person's understanding of lying (someone who avoids eye contact must be lying!) or on reality (someone could be avoiding eye contact for lots of different reasons)? They're making a game, afterall, not a simulator. Like you say, you would hope it's the latter based on the research they must have done. That and they have the ability to act
-
I hate you so much right now. I just thought you should know that
-
Oh brother. An actor acting as though they're lying vs an actor acting as though they're telling the truth. Right. I hope they took this list of myths into account: http://hbswk.hbs.edu/archive/3123.html Still, it seems I should pick up this game once I have the money, as everyone appears to be having fun with it

Bah. Cleverbot stinks. My first conversation... Meh.
